Subject: Ben Folds Five in DETROIT!

Ben Folds Five day finally arrived in my area: April 25th! I was finally
going to see my favourite live band live for the first time. Had a great
time trying to find name tags in the city of Windsor before the show but no
luck! Ended up getting one from Frank though at the show (thanx Frank!)

The show ----> In one word: Incredible !!!!!!!!! :) :)
In a few more:
Wow..what a great night!!!! Got there early in order to get my spot in front
of the stage (after tearing a poster off the wall of course). Just seeing
Ben's piano sitting on stage was sending explosions of joy throughout my
mind. Komeda (the opening band) came on and played for about a half an
hour. They were pretty decent I suppose. Once they were done, I turned
arround and saw that the room was absolutely packed (goes to show what
airplay can do!). Saw practically nobody with name tags on. But
anyhow....the sheer and utter greatest was soon to come and Ben, Rob, and
Darren appeared on stage. I can't recite everything Ben did but here is the
set list which I wrote out as thow show went on:

MISSING THE WAR: Who would have guessed eh? Was such a nice way to start
the show....kinda set everyone in that blissful frame of mind.
PHILOSOPHY: Was hoping this wasn't too far into the setlist. I went crazy
as did most others around me.
EMALINE: Felt good singing along with this gem!
LAST POLKA: Fun Fun Fun!!
KATE: This was soo great! I'd say my favourite song from the show!
SELFLESS, COLD, AND COMPOSED: Perfect song to follow Kate...kinda cooled us
all down.
ALICE CHILDRESS: mint!
BRICK: The song EVERYONE was waiting for and unfortunately to our and Ben's
suprise, the band playing in the lower level of the club was VERY loud and
we could hear the pumping bass from below. Ben wasn't too impressed...I
felt bad.....had to really block out the downstairs sound. None the
less...it was truly amazing :) :) :)
STEVEN'S LAST NIGHT IN TOWN: Ben had this little mouth organ-thingy.
Replaced the Klezmatics quite nicely! They didn't do the little that little
foreign language thing (keep-na-jutsay or whatever) though. Actually it was
moments before I left for the show that I FINALLY heard the phone ringing in
the song!
JACKSON CANNERY: Brought me back to the day I brought home the first album
after being instructed that I MUST HAVE IT!
ONE ANGRY DWARF
FAIR
DR. PYSER: was thrilled to hear this one!
BATTLE OF WHO..: the hit single of course! I don't know though...I did
the little "whatever" sign at the appropriate time but noticed that only 1
or 2 people arround me did it as well. For some reason, I expect EVERYONE's
hands to fly up. Then again..I was up front and should have turned arround
to see the people behind me maybe.
BEST IMITATION OF MYSELF
SHE DON'T USE JELLY (Flaming Lips of course..)
SONG FOR THE DUMPED
UNDERGROUND: we CAN be happy and we were!
encore: SMOKE and JULIANNE

More:
Got to chat with Ben after the show which was GREAT!! I felt so honoured !
Also chatted with Rob and Darren as well. Went home with a few stickers
(ok...more than a FEW) and "Kate" and "Dr. Pyser" stuck in my mind. I sang
KATE all the way back to Canada through the Detroit-Canada tunnel. The
concert I've waited soooo long to see is now over....so sad.

I could go on but won't....can just imagine how long this would be if I had
posted it as I got home from the concert.
All in all...was the show of the year and one of the best I've ever seen in
my life!!!

cheers

Hiya Armchairettes!
I know how much we all thrive on the sheer eccentricity of Ben and
the gang and the excellent jobs they would all make of other people's
old songs, but I thought that everybody didn't actually want BFF to be like
everybody else and to just remain unusual,- the best way of doing
this is by surely staying original and writing new and original
songs. Oh well, just a thought. Mind you Nagila Hava (Or however you spell it)
was pretty funky. I didn't know Ben was Jewish?! Cool.
Also, for European fans, as far as I am aware sole gigs are set to be
held in London (23rd June) (SOLD OUT) with an additional date on the
1st of July. (Relatively) small venues will be used,- great more
intimacy and personal entertainment!!!
Finally, did anybody see 'Later... with Jules Holland', BBC2,
Saturday 6th (?) April? Mind you it was on at about 1.40am so I don't
blame you if you didn't. Ben et al appeared singing 'Philosophy' for
a completely disappointing 3 or 4 mins. This has nothing to do with
their performance mind you, but in my mind they deserved at least 30
mins not 3 or 4. They sang one song whilst Hootie and the Blowfish
(good band), were allowed 2. Sorry to be pedantic but in all fairness
others should be allowed to be treated to the marvel of the music
that is BFF.
Incidently, how do you tape concerts? Come on, I need to know how all
you experts go about doing this. Confidentiality guaranteed!!!
Thanks to Spin out there, where-ever you are, I think that your tips
will come in very handy,- I'll let you know!

Subject: Is this a record?

Everyone seems to always state how long they've been a fan of BFF,
but nobody ever mentions anything about the speed at which they
became one. Here's my offering,- any other challenges?
Heard the song BoWCCL on a Saturday, bought the BFF album on Monday,-
bought numerous other past singles later that week, bought BoWCCL and
Whatever... on day of release, booked first concert tickets ten days
after the first time I ever heard them. Past tapings of television
interviews, trailers etc. and now rapidly getting worn out!!
No, I'm not a creepy and obsessed 'Number One Fan'. I'm just pretty
impressed by the genius behind the band, and their individual sound
of music. I draw the line at following the band around the country,- can't afford
it, timewise and economically!
Any challenging responses?!!!
K.

Last night, 4/27/97 on 120 minutes, Matt Pinfield and the geniuses at MTV
displayed the Wahtever album cover and talked about just having shown
BoWCCL and how great it was after showing a K's Choice video. Despite this
awful mistake, he did say that they will be on next week's episode so for
all of those who stay up late on Sunday nights, the boys will be
interviewed which usually means clips from all of their videos and at least
one full legth video, maybe if we are lucky a live performance too(hope,
hope). Anyway I can't wait till Saturday May 3, 5:45 99x stage at Midtown
Music Festival, Atlanta GA I finally get to see BFF for the first time (in
the words of Damon Albarn WaaaaaHoooooo)

Hey everyone! The Cleveland Show was amazing! I have never been to
such an inspiring show in all my 18 years! My friends and I flew up
there, (I'm a pilot), sorry I didn't get to see any Armchairers, Air
Traffic Control sent us out to Akron and back because of traffic from
the international airport. Anyway, the thing I wanted to know was, if
there was going to be a show in Cincinnati anytime soon. I was
listening to Channel Z, our local crap station who plays BFF and
practically claims to have discovered them, and they said they were
bringing BFF into town soon. Well, I almost fell out of the my seat.
Anyway, if anyones heard anything, let me know!!!

On Sunday May 4th, Ben Folds Five (accompanied by Silverchair) will
appear as special guests on 120 Minutes (12:00 am-MTV) . This
information was provided by RockonTV
(www.satchmo.com/rockontv/), a web site dedicated to listing events
associated with the music industry.

Also, the bffweb.com Tour Date list is incorrect for 5-29-97. The name
of the venue that BFF will be appearing is SARATOGA WINNERS NOT
the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE!
Saratoga Winners is a bar (capacity 600+ people) and SPAC is an
outdoor theater (seats approximately 26,000 people) and will not be
open until the middle of June.

Tickets are $11 and available at the Saratoga Winners box office. To
complicate things a bit more, Saratoga Winners is not in Saratoga. The
bar is on Route 9 in Latham.

Joe.

P.S. REALLY mis ya' Frank.
