Man. WOW! There is certainly not a better show that I've been to. I'm
sure all BFF shows are great, but I have to imagine this is one of the
better ones. I think aside from the amazing talent by the band, the level
of intimacy they reach with the crowd adds a lot to the show! I didn't
remember the set list exactly, but I didn't hear Evaporated, which I really
wanted to. They came out and played the Flaming Lips song and Julianne for
the encore. The opening band, Komeda was simply horrible. I kind of felt
embarrassed for them.

I'm not going to give a real long review of the show because I'm sure
someone else will. For anyone who collects bootlegs, you better get this
show! In fact, if anyone did tape it (I saw one armchair guy taping it),
email me and let me know if I can get a copy!

In keeping with the armchair tradition, I met Ben after the show. I have
some answers about the whole Conan/Letterman situation. First of all, Ben
said that they canceled Conan because they were too tired from playing so
many gigs in a row. So there's no reason to go boycotting Conan O'Brien.
They rescheduled with him and are going on the show some time in June.
And about Letterman, they already are scheduled to play (I think he said
some time after Conan, but I'm not sure). I know it's been said before,
but it's amazing to meet Ben and realize that he is just a regular guy -
that's pretty cool.

One of the funnier moments which I have to tell is when fan shouted, "Play
the bitch song!" Then it turned into Ben saying to Robert, "I think he
said the big song." So they just went on and played the "Big Song." It
went like this - "This is the big song. It's not the bitch song. It's
really really really really big. It's not the bitch song. It's totally
different different different..." You get the point. It was pretty funny.

Man, I could have left after the first two songs and been happy (Missing
the war and Philosophy) They are amazing.

The show was great!! It was awesome. I got there about six so I could get
right up front. Ben walked out several times and at first no one stopped
him. Then someone did call him and take a picture. He made a goofy
face for the shot. But no one around me really talked to him at that
point.

The opening band Komeda had some problems. The organ wouldn't work and
the soundguy kept trying new wires and when he pulled one out and put
another one in it made a horrendous noise. Scared the lead singer - she
nearly jumped out of her skin. After trying unsucessfully the organist
decided to call it a night. Then the guitar player's string broke. They
ended up cutting the set short by about 2-3 songs. They were pretty good
from what I saw.

Ben and the boys Rocked! As for what he played I don't know exactly what
he played but here's a list. Hil may be able to add a few--she's the only
fellow armchair member I saw there.

Off of Whatever and Ever Amen

One Angry Dwarf
Brick
Song for the Dumped
Selfless, Cold, and Composed
Kate
Cigarette
Stevens Last Night in Town
Battle of who could care Less
Missing the War

---Dont know if he did fair, smoke or evaporated.

From 1st CD

Philosphy
Julianne
Underground
Jackson Cannery
Last Polka
Alice Childress

- ----Don't know if he did Summer B--think maybe, sports and wine, video, &
Boxing. I know he didn't do Uncle Walter -- people kept screaming for it
but they never got to it.

people were screaming for the "Bitch" song but Ben made a joke and said
they were screaming for the "Big" song so they made it up. Also Ben had
to change into a short sleeve shirt -- the place was very hot--no
airconditioning (at least not last night). During that time Robert and
Darren made something up and Robert sang. It was funny. For cover they
did "Vaseline"

Well thats about it. It was a great show. I didn't stick around
afterwards cause I had to be at work 7:30 this morning. While waiting in
line someone handed out BFF posters to the first few people in line. They
were cool.

If anyone taped last night's show, I'd be interested in a copy.

Hullo-
Someone asked "is BFF really going to be there with Mighty Mighty
Bosstones, Soul Coughing, Morphine and others?" Yes, Bff will be there,
but the Bosstones are on the Skankin' and Crankin' tour. Can't wait!

Hi! Just wanted to know if anyone knows when HORDE is coming to the
Detroit area or where can you get a schedule. Also, there's a good
interview with the band at www.freep.com/fun/music/qfolds.htm And, my two
cents for the cover songs. How 'bout The Odds Heteosexual Man or REM's
Stand? Just thinking.

All you websurfers out there might want to check out the
online interview with BFF at:

Their decidedly mixed review of the new record (6/10 stars, boo hiss)
which appeared a few weeks ago, has been removed from the "reviews"
section of the site, although its still available through the search
engine.

What a bunch of panywaists. Quit yer damn crying. "The list is too
big.....The magic is gone....BFF isn't trendy enough for me anymore....I can't
like a popular band (although the music is better now)....I can't read three
emails a day.." Just shut the hell up. If you don't like it fine. That's why
you can unsubscribe. It's really a straight forward process as far as I can
tell. Do you think anyone else cares about how you hate deleting emails? If you
don't like how many armchairs you get, here's a clue, delete them. My friends on
the Medeski Martin and Wood list get about 70 emails a day and they aren't even in
a nice little package like the armchair is. BUT, they love it. They like the
fact that so many people care about their favorite band. If BFF and their list is
too big for ya now find someone else to bother with your small-mindedness. BFF
fans don't need your kind anyway. Success never scared away any fans of the music
only fans of "individuality." Whatever alternateens, "We're individuals dammit,
we all dress the same."
Step aside and let the man go through.

I came across a review of the New York show at Salon. Here's the URL:

http://www.salonmagazine.com/may97/sharps/sharps.html

and as far as that thing about the line in Fair being "Awww, Liz Phair
in love"....what kinda crack are you people smoking? heheh...sorry.
That's a weird thing to hear if you ask me. oh well.

and on another note...who would you guys like to hear produce benny and
the boys? not that caleb is doin a bad job or nuthin...but i'd be kinda
curious how they'd sound if someone else produced 'em. Like Kramer at
Shimmy-Disc, or Steve Albini (tho, i don't know if he'd know what to do
if there wasn't a guitar to screw around with), or mitchell froom
(suzanne vega's honey, i am so jealous of that man...) oh well, just
curious if yall had any input on that...okbye.

I didn't know there would be much interest, but I saved the entire AOL chat
conversation minus the first three questions which I missed, but I'd be glad
to e-mail it to anyone who wants one, just e-mail me personally, and don't
post on this list, and I'll send it to you as soon as I can.
