I'd just like to take a moment to send thanks out to
Patrick McDonough (hope I didn't butcher the name) and everyone else
who's been posting great reviews of shows lately. I really love the
one's of you who are posting the set lists. It's cool to see what
they're playing live in different places. Rumor has it, that BFF will be
touring with a four piece string section on HORDE. Does anyone know for
sure if that is true? The only thing I'm bummed about is that Soul
Coughing won't be on the Chicago or the Alpine Valley dates, it'd be way
cool to see my two favorite bands together at the same show.

I heard June 11th on Conan O'Brien, and June 13th on Jenny McCarthy.

Subject: Another Lame Review
People on the Armchair (or whatever you want to call yourself)
I just wanted to say the Armcharis have been getting much better lately,
with far less "unsubscribes" and entire digests quoted. We may be over the
transition hump, and back to talking about the band.
Anyway, I was visiting family in Rhode Island this weekend, and our
favorite band got a good review from the Providence Journal music "critic."
He basically likes bands because everyone else does (as anyone who has read
Andy Smith before knows).The good point is the BF5 got some press before
tonight's show there.
I'll spare you the entire review, but highlights included comments such as
"Kate is a song about a woman liked so much, he doesn't just want her, he
wants to be her! She's the kind of woman who leaves daisies in her
footsteps."
The other key comment, (and don't flame me for this, go to the source)
"brick is a touching song about a sinking relationship."
Just wanted to pass along these few comments, however lame they may be.

Subject: I analyzed Brick for a school project!
Hi everyone.
I have nothing important to say; I just wanted to mention how I brought
my musical taste into a school project. Recently, we had to do a poetry
project for school which would consist of 10 poems and an analysis for
each one. After going through numbers of songs, I decided that "Brick"
was the best song to use. (Keep in mind we were only allowed to use ONE
song as a poem; the rest had to be "real" poems.) The reasons why i
picked it were because of the lack of profanity/vulgarity and because I
thought it would be funny (at least to us Armchairers who had to go
through the torture of reading all of the Brick interpretations) to
analyze what the song meant MYSELF (instead of reading various strangers
interpretations on the Armchair).
The problem was that without the music, the words don't have the same
meaning...so how did I solve this problem??? I made a little tape of
Brick and gave it to my teacher (who likes country music....yuck! :O )
yesterday to listen to and low and behold, she returned it today! She
said she didn't understand it...she asked if it would make more sense
when she read my paper. How annoying!
I told her, "Um...probably." It definitely wasn't the reaction I
expected...I guess I had my hopes up too much! I thought that maybe,
just maybe, she would turn into a fan or something...at least say that
it was a good song! Anyways, before I make this pointless post even
longer, I think I will just shut up. Sorry for this...it seemed like a
good thing to post at first, but this turned out to be really boring!
To sum it up: well, let's just hope my teacher understands the song
when she reads my analysis. i'm going to hope *really* hard! can't
wait to see my grade...hehe.

Subject: bff in dc
Several people asked about the DC show on Friday. I would assume that BFF
is opening for Bettie Serveert since Bettie Serveert is the only name on
the ticket. As far as a starting time, shows usually start around 9:30,
but the doors open earlier than usual, so the show probably starts
earlier. Its probably best to call the 9:30 to find out the starting
time. As for Bettie Serveert, I've heard parts of the new album, but
nothing particularly fascinating, although I'm interested in seeing them.
A friend of mine likes them, and he says their first album is still their
best, it has The Kid's Alright (good song) and Palomine. Hope the info
helps.

Subject: Boston Show - My 1/20 of Dollar
Hey, y'all!
I'm back in Florida now after a little extended stay in New England just to
see Ben Folds Five. I finagled my way to stay in the area despite having
to move out of my dorm last Sunday just so I could see the show at the
Paradise. I'm that much of a deranged fan everybody! Well, in catching up
on the recent issues of the digest, I have to say that Patrick and
MarlAntigone covered pretty much all of the scoop on the show. Here are
some more tidbits you might want to know about the Boston show:
- - Ben played pretty much all of "Steven" on the melodica including the
middle instrumental section. He only played the piano at end as he segued
into "One Angry Dwarf."
- - Ben mentioned some obscure band as the band they had hoped would also
join the trend to play "Free Bird." It was Twig-sometihing...
- - In "Fair," whoever was running the lights fired up the disco balls during
the song's disco-ey bridge. I just really got a kick out of this!
- - "Kate" I believe was the third song in the set right after "One Angry
Dwarf" BTW, anybody out there with the songs in the right order. My
memory's a bit fuzzy in regards to the order the songs were played in
during the show.
- - Ben also noodled a bit on some other thing on the piano by himself. He
said something to the effect of "That's the best I can do with that" or
something like that. Anybody with info on this?
- - During "Best Imitation," Ben did climb on top of the piano, but he didn't
do the little solo he normally does where he plays the piano with the
microphone.
- - Ben did a little Bruce Springsteen shtick doing some "stop" motion with
his hands right before going into "We can be happy underground" at the
beginning of "Underground." This was just as the guy in the audience
jumped the gun once again!
Despite the references to jetlag and tiredness, I thought the show was
great! I was especially happy since I got a spot about four people away
from the stage on Ben's side of the stage. I got some really good views of
Ben's fingers. I'm surprised at the kind of stuff he does with his left
hand. I never realized how much chord playing his left hand does.
I must say that the tiredness was a bit evident in the first few songs (to
those who were at the show: Was it just me or weren't "Steven," "Dwarf,"
"Kate," and "Philosophy" taken at noticeably slower tempos?), but once they
got warmed up, the show really got rolling. Plus, the band's stage
presence and sense of humor was still there. Ben was mugging for the
cameras. Robert was jumping around. Darren was making those goofy faces
behind the drums. I just really, really enjoyed the show! The only gripes
I had were the exclusion of a cover song and another song from their
earlier shtuff. I was hoping for "Uncle Walter," "Alice Childress," or
"Eddie Walker" myself. Also, the bass was bit on the loud side. This
really didn't help since the club was a bit on the small side and the
acoustics weren't all that great.
Aside from that, it was another memorable show by the band. I left the
theater with one big happy grin on my face! I managed to snap a few
pictures of the show. I'll have access to a scanner again when I return
to school in the fall, so keep an eye out for pictures from the Boston show
on my web page this fall.
BTW, anybody know what happened to the big yellow truck? I noticed that
they've got a tour bus with a black trailer behind it nowadays.

Got my hands on the "Kate" singles and I love "Mitchell Lane." I remember
someone saying that Darren had written it, and that he had sung it in
concert, but it is most certainly Ben singing on this version. So I'm
confused. It doesn't say on the sleeve who wrote the song...anyone know for
sure?
ALSO, the demo version of "Bad Idea" might be similar to the version on
_The Truth About Cats & Dogs_ soundtrack, but the lyrics are not the same
as what's posted on one of the websites. Can someone help me out with the
first verse? "Pull over the car...pull over the car...BLAH BLAH BLAH" and
then "pull over the car...pull over the car....BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH." What
are the lyrics here? It's driving me insane, I can't study for my exams, I
stay up nights listening to it over and over...well, I could be
exaggerating just a tad, but it is annoying.
And I don't care what "that lad Ben in London" says...Ben yelled "hi
Rebecca!" on TFI Friday and I will believe that until I die. I am purposely
going to be sure not to see that performance again so that I can live in my
fantasy world.

Bette Serveert is a four-piece band from Holland. They are touring to support
their third release - Dust Bunnies. They are guitar-edged power-pop with
great hooks. They are fantastic live and their lead singer rocks. If they are
