The phrase "Punk rock for sissies" was actually a term coined by Ben Folds
himself to describe the band. This was said in CMJ when the first album came
out, as well as other publications, such as my local newspaper. =P I do
agree that I can't find a suitable description for BFF, so instead I DO give
them the first album, but then I never get it back!! =)
Sorry for the really pointless post.

im very sorry but im SO sick of these damn top 10 lists. why does it
seem every few months people feel the need to share with everyone their
top 10 bands albums or the like. i love learning out about new music but
sorting through it 3 times a day to find out BFF info kinda sucks so lets
keep it to ourselves okay kids?

Well... this is primarily a test I guess... this mail SHOULDNT end up on
the digest because I'm not subscribed thru this address. You might find
it interesting that people who aren't even subscribed can post to the
armchair. I guess that's not entirely absurd... a little odd though.
Okay now for some content...
In Raging Bull, DeNiro says "Boxing's been good to me" but doesn't say
Howard, and there's no howard in the movie. I'm guessing this line was
just inspired by what Ali said to Howard... DeNiro says it in the latter
days of the boxer.. when he becomes a lounge entertainer. Anyways, that
just struck me when I heard that line... I went WHOAH... thought that's
where Ben got it until this list told me otherwise. Okay.. later bye

Hi everyone!
I saw someone post a question about brick. It took me a while to get too,
but it "clicked" the other day... Now, although I'm not sure, I think it
might be about him taking his girlfriend to have an abortion. As far as
top ten lists go, I think they're perfectly fine... My list goes : Tori
Amos, BFF, Bjork, Loreena McKennitt, Counting Crows, and umm.. that's it so
far. My fav BFF song has got to be either "Brick" or "Underground". I saw
them at Edgefest in Dallas a couple weeks ago and they were great, but I
don't think most of the crowd appreciated them. This post might have been
a little too long, but it's my first and probably longest.
Feel free to email me with ANYTHING about Tori or Ben, even just chatter...

Subject: Conan...
Okay, I'm sure tons of people will write their little "reviews" of the
Conan appearance, so I'll make mine short and sweet: I loved it. Now for
specifics: how did you guys like the "Franklin Gosh Darn Mint" part? Ha,
ha. pretty clever. Also, that dog shirt (I think it says Kayla on it)
is a shirt that someone threw to Ben at the 4/26/97 Cleveland show at the
Odeon...I'm almost positive. Not that that's very important, I just
thought I was cool that Ben wore it on tv...hey, I'm sure whoever threw
it on stage agrees...
And now a question: What was that demonic voice saying? I didn't catch
that...something about it's been a long time since something or
another...but I thought a name was said at first or something...ahh, who
knows...but it's almost 2am, so I shouldn't be worrying about such
trivial matters...
Any word on the New York Summerstage show...anyone, anyone? I'd like
some info on that as well: am most interested to know if there are
tickets available still...

well, here i am, fresh from seeing them on the conan obrien show which is
the first time that i have ever seen them move (in other words, i've seen
their pictures, but that's it). alas, i guess the days are past when talk
show hosts actually talk to their musical guests, but what can one expect
from the late late show or whatever it's called? i thoroughly enjoyed
them. you think rockford files was cool....baby. and why don't we pitch
to the franklin goshdarn mint. i had been wondering what he would insert
there. i hope those of you who have bothered to check out the julianne
midi file are having a good time with it. i know it's not the most hitech
work on the planet, but i think it's cool. i learn more stuff about my
music program everyday, and the next installment, i think it will be
jackson cannery, will be according to MUCH higher standards, just give me
a chance. here i am but a lonely math major unable to play th epiano well
enough to match ben's skill and therefore have to resort to the computer,
one of my lifelines. i know, i'm weird, but i have to get this out
somewhere, and i don't post very often. well, the bottom line is, i
enjoyed the show. someone tell the guys that i said thanks for doing it
and making a bunch of great people very happy, and i hope to see them on
the jenny mccarthy show (despite how much i despise her).
have a nice day!

Subject: Toronto, stuff (NO TOP 10)
Okay, I have a bunch of things I need to get out there, so I'll just start.
CONAN O'BRIEN: I just finished watching BFF on Conan (they weren't
great--just basically the album version of BOWCCL), and it was late Tuesday
night, or officially Wednesday morning. Nothing big if you missed it.
TO MEG: I watched DMB on Letterman and I guess I missed the BFF outro...DMB
were amazing though, eh? (Canadian content)
REPEAT EMAILS: Okay, the last bunch of emails I've sent to the list have
been returned to me saying it couldn't be sent, but then it actually is
sent. I don't know what's going on, but hopefully we can get it fixed
before people start sending copy after copy of their letters to the list
thinking their first one didn't get through.
TOP 10 LISTS: I do agree that that guy who wrote about fags and stuff is an
idiot and deserves to be kicked off the list. I do think that the top 10
lists are annoying (I don't think I'd ever post to the Armchair about all
the other bands I like) and are off topic and not relevant to what is
supposed to go on on this list...however who am I to tell other people what
to do? You can do whatever you want and I can say I dislike whatever's
going on. That's the way it goes.
TO VAL: Wow, your review was exactly what I thought of the show but was too
lazy to write out in detail like you did. There was no Uncle Walter, but
that other set list seemed about right.
I too was upset they didn't play Alice Childress (my favorite song as well).
Sorry if I'm ignorant about 80's music, but hey not everyone's perfect. And
where I was, when the girl from September 67 threw the mic back to Ben and
it landed on the ground, that hurt my ears it was so loud.
It sucks that no one could make a tape of the show.
SOME QUESTIONS I'M BEGGING SOMEONE ON THE LIST TO ANSWER:
1) Okay, so what is this song "Night Falls" someone at the Toronto
show was screaming for Ben to play all night
2) What does Steve Malkmus (lead singer of Pavement) have to do with
BFF and why were they always talking about him at the Toronto show? I hope
this doesn't sound stupid or is totally wrong, but from what I tried to
piece together, maybe Steve and the lead singer of Septemeber 67 were going
out and he broke up with her?!?
3) Why is the verse of "Kate" the best part of any song BFF have
ever written (you don't actually have to answer that one)
Anyways, it sucks they cancelled out on the Ottawa show.
Later,
Jay

Just saw the boys on Conan. That's the closest thing to a live
performance I've seen from them ever (until I go to HORDE). They played
tBoWWCL, of course. Pretty cool, especially the "franklin gosh-darn
mint" part. Um, is Ben just really short, or is Conan just really tall,
because afterward, when Conan shook Ben's hand, he (Conan) looked like a
giant, and Ben looked like a dwarf (although not angry :-)).

As a final farewell (until September), just like to say thanks to everyone who's
visited my web page, emailed me, or generally kept me in my place. Well done
to those of you who managed to get through the rough patch in one piece, sorry
to those who are no longer with us, hope you come back, and a big F*** OFF to
certain persons who lack the intelligence to politely offer argument (yes,
Mr Snead, I refer to you. If you haven't already, please unsubscribe yourself
and your self-importance. The mailing list will not suffer your loss).
So, keep your noses clean. I might see some of you at Glastonbury (I've no idea
what you look like, but I know you'll be there). Enjoy H.O.R.D.E. if you're
going, or the Summerstage gig, or whatever chance you get to see BFF.
And remember, if you can't be good, BE CAREFUL >8)
See you all in September...

I have a confession to make...
Until recently I'd given up reading the Armchair, I'd have quick look and if
nothing stood out it would go unread.
BUT THESE TOP 10s ARE GREAT! It's revitalised the Armchair.
It really is interesting and enlightening to see what other BFF listeners
are into. After seeing a few albums mentioned several times I'll be looking
out for them to see what I think.
If you've read Bens own top 10 albums you'll see he has eclectic taste, so
good on ya all you top ten mailers. Keep them coming.
Perhaps I'll even send mine!
(I now sit back and expect another volley of bad tempered readers saying
'enough is enough', 'no more top tens' etc. etc. well let 'em rant - the
rest of us are enjoying it.)

Subject: Minneapolis, the EDGE, & Jeff Buckley
Hi all! Just thought I'd help make sense of the EDGE controversy.
Between songs at the June 4 Minneapolis show, Ben hushed the crowd and
asked, "Which local radio station was it that was mocking one of the
greatest singers that ever lived?" [This is assumedly a reference to
Jeff Buckley, who was presumed drowned at the time] A portion of the
crowd replied "93.7", or "The EDGE". [The station had been belittling
Buckley since he disappeared--going so far as to record a distasteful
parody song about it] Ben: "93.7, the EDGE?...Do they play us?" About
half of the crowd yelled, "No". Ben: "Good. I hope they never do."
And they launched into "Dwarf"...
I've heard BFF on the Edge a few times. Not nearly as much as say,
Hanson, though. I don't think Ben was shooting himself in the foot with
the comment, he just seemed to be standing up for an artist he respected
(Buckley was found dead later the night of June 4 -- R.I.P.).
Incidentally, The EDGE van was parked right out in front of the venue
the night of the show. Certainly some people from the station heard
Ben's comment first-hand.
Great show, BTW :)
