I'm not Mr. X... but I'm glad to see another person on this list from Utah.
Woo hoo!! I sure hope I can get work off so that I can pay $40 to see BF5
on July 17th with Primus, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Morphine, Squirrel Nut
Zippers, and a bunch of other bands!!!

Yeah, well, just reading Emily's post, it seems that it is an accordion,
but hey, I could be wrong stating the obvious (unlikely though) and it
reminded me of a question that I have. Often, there's a really different
sound like Smoke, and especially in Mitchell Lane. Is Ben being naughty
and fiddling about with the strings inside the piano?

You rock, you really do-could anyone say it better? The whole point of
this mailing list is for fans to discuss stuff, and if you put a stop to
that in any way then you kinda defeat the object. Ask away.

Please, please, please let them play Emaline this time. Come on lads
let's keep up the usual high standard of music. In fact it is
probably beyond comprehension that they could do any wrong.
See you there guys!!!
Oh, and by the way, just in the off-chance of making anybody jealous
out there,- we've just had our student ball,- the largest in Europe
apparently. Anyway 6,000 attended the Swansea (?!) mid-summer ball,
and for 'music entertainment' we were honoured enough to get Echobelly,
My Life Story and The Beekeepers (cool up-and-coming British band,- watch
out for them!)!! All performances were live and completely outstanding. Wow,-
it certainly beats the usual local mobile disco!!!
Right, well, see you all after the summer vacation. I'll catch up on
all the gossip then.

Subject: HORDE & Miscellaneous Stuff...
WARNING! Long post to follow!
Hello all...
Just some quick questions about the HORDE festival (on the
off chance that someone out there knows what the deal is)...
First of all... are there TWO dates at Great Woods in MA, or
just one? The only place I've seen Saturday, August 9 listed
in addition to the August 8 date is on the official BFF web site...
Also, I was checking out the lineups, and... what gives??? At
Great woods, BFF gets 30 minutes (along with Cake Like,
Leftover Salmon, and the *Local Battle of the Band Winner*!!!)
while Toad the Wet Sprocket gets 40, Soul Coughing gets 45,
and Beck gets 1 hour and 15 minutes. And does anyone know if
there are 2 stages? 'Cuz I'm also wondering why the ONLY
overlap of the day is with Primus and BFF (Primus is on
from 6:25 - 7:25 and BFF is on from 7:10 - 7:30)? (BTW,
If you want to check the lineup for your local date the web
site is http://hordefestival.com). C'mon HORDE... give us
more BFF!!!
And one more issue/question unrelated to HORDE... what's
the deal with the official BFF web site... it's a huge pain in
the ass to deal with! It crashes Netscape on my Mac at work,
(and believe me, I tried multiple times!!!) so I had to check it
out with Explorer from my home PC, and when I looked for an
e-mail address so I could alert them to this and other issues...
there wasn't any! Oof. So, a big THANK YOU to Frank Maynard
for having such a first rate site (and contributing to my ever-
increasing BFF habit)!!!
So, those are my burning questions... sorry it was such a long
post (especially for a newbie to the Armchair). And at the risk
of droning on & on... I was a little nervous about this list at
first. I joined just a week or so ago, so the first few editions
were just chock full of vitriolic spew, and I was disheartened...
but now, it seems to be much more mellow... almost makes me
think the squirrels and the birds will be gathering shortly to sing
the guitar... :-D Anyway -- I'm happy to be a part of it!
That's all -- thanks for not getting fed up with my rambling...

Hey, y'all--
I'm so happy; I've finally realized my mission in life: I was born to
answer the "keyboard/wind instrument" question that pops up every time a new
fan sees BF5 play "Steven" for the first time! Every time it comes up, we
get a lot of posts saying "I think it's called...", but I figure it'll save a
lot of time and guesswork if I simply assure you that the little keyboard
instrument Ben blows into is really, truly, definitely, ain't-no-doubt,
honest-to-God, absolutely called (drum roll)....a melodica. Cute li'l thing,
ain't it?
Incidentally, it's supposedly known as a "hooter" in some circles, but
I've never heard anyone actually call it that except that guy from the
Hooters (they were an '80s band, kids, whose most recent project was writing
"One Of Us" for Joan Osborne) who says the band was named after the
instrument, rather than...well, you know.
Exit music please,
...Okay; never mind

There's something in the way Ben Folds
caresses notes out of nothing
that calls to the soul.
It makes you feel,
or at least it let me feel.
it let's me open up
all those doors
I thought would never see the light again.
It lets me feel the burn
of a tear's tracks,
and taste the white chocolate of her kiss once more.
I pop in the tape
and my mind works again.
All the hurting and anguish
comes out in a cathartic burst
as my voice joins his
and my pain creshendos
with the pianos cries.
I feel whole again,
at least until the music stops...

Is it me or are the sleeve notes on BFF just a bit rubbish. Not even a
track listing (OK so it's on the back but so what) no lyrics no thanks not
even the witicisms of WAEA. Even the bussiness reply is on the sleeve so
you have to cut your sleeve and wreck it (call me neurotic) I'll have to go
to some shitty commercial record shop and nick the sleeve from their £15.99
rip off of BFF. I happened to get mine from Highway 61 in Birmingham for
9.99 definately the best record shop in area.
However it does go to prove that you can't judge a book from the cover. I
prefer this much more to Whatever. Philosophy has got to be one of the most
listenable songs ever recorded. It's just a shame my mom recorded over the
live performance of it from Jools Holland. Damn! Those chords in Alice
Childress chill me and the vocal part rules when he sings "it's getting
late where you are". The start to Underground is spooky aswell. "hand me my
nosering" always makes me laugh. Is it me or does Ben sound like Sylvester
the Cat when he sings "WithhhfphUncle Walter". Is that deliberate you
think. Best Imitation rocks.
Got the Kate singles for 99p each (HMV 3.59 each). Mitchell Lane is the
only real good B side. I wouldn't mind hearing some live tracks. They must
have played enough shows god damn.
Thanks for listening to my rantings.
No time to search the world around
cus you know where i'll be found WHEN I COME AROUD

Listen up you weird and wonderful people. For two of the best new bands to
come out of the UK this year, check out River Attic and Anam. Both of them
absolutely awsome, and both incredibly stylish. If you ever liked The
Cocteau Twins, The Cranberries or PJ Harvey, then River Attic are right up
your street.
Anam are playing Glastonbury on the Avalon Stage at 1.30pm on Friday, so
just enough time to see them before the BF5 on the NME stage. Don't miss
out!
