Howdy!
When it was asked if CMJ likes bff or hates them, the answer is quite simple: CMJ loves bff. Both of their albums have been in the "Best New Music" section of that mag. CMJ is what taught me of bff's existance, and for that I am forever grateful. Stick with CMJ, they've got some real cool stuff!

I was mowing the lawn when suddenly I heard Dwarf on the radio. It was
very cool. Im still surprised by how much they allow on the radio
nowadays. The only word they edited was sh*t. Was this song supposed to
be played on the radio, or did the DJ just do it out of the heck of it?
Oh well, dont yell at me if everybody knew about this already. See ya.

a) i couldnt get a photo pass. but thats no ones fault but the person who
told me shed get it.
b) the set was too short.
c) the string section is a little rock star-ish. but i can deal since jeremy
enigk can pull it off.
d) they played oh so few old songs. but i guess i expected that.

im sorry to say that this show was not as good as the recent one at irving
plaza, and that show wasnt as good as the one before that. hopefully, this
progression will stop growing worse and turn around sometime. but still, ben
and darren and robert will always remain talented men. =D

Hiya,

I caught BFF at "The Arches" in Glasgow about 3-4 months
ago and they killed me stone dead. Best gig I've been to
in years. Does anyone know if there are any BFF songbooks
available (for piano/vocal)?

Cheers,

RE: Copy of: Ben Folds Five withdrawals...

Hello all you BFF fanatics!
I find myself getting into a deep slump because I was mesmerized at their
March 18th show in Amsterdam and now what?... They won't be around for a
while, from what I can gather and between me and my kids we listen to the
two cd's morning, noon and night!!!! I am starting to think that nothing
else exists out there and I have removed all of my other cassettes from the
car because they were just collecting dust... I am sure that I am losing it
and I don't even think I really care. Is this a pure Lisa thing or are
there others out there in the same boat (well, cd, actually!). I could use
the support, guys!!! Please send me your personal experiences and/or
anticdotes about the band. Maybe that will help me buy some time until the
next show in Holland....
BTW, to the Jessee person who lives in Chapel Hill. If you know lots about
the ole BFF stomping grounds why don't you write some of it in and share it
with the masses here in armchair land? Most of us will never get the chance
to see it and I bet it is a great place! Look what it produced!
As for you people bitching about opening bands... They seem to be a
necessary evil in life and we just have to live with it. Some are probably
gruesome, but just think of it as a test to see how much we can stand to
see our favorite band. Let's focus on the positive!
If anyone out there is going to tape the Conan show or the Jenny McCarthy
show, could someone think of me? I have a US videorecorder and TV, so that
wouldn't be a problem. If someone is willing to tape it for me, could you
mail me personally and we could arrange something. I would be so very
grateful! No, not that grateful, you smutheads!!!
Frank, I think you did an awesome job and Majordomo, or whatever it is at
the moment, seems to be going okay. It is people like you that really help
bands like BFF! You're a prince!
Groetjes van midden Nederland!
Whatever and ever....Lisa Joy

Subject: Summerstage Show

Allright, here's my take on last night's summer stage show. First of all,
the set was WAY too short. Only songs off BFF s/t were Philosophy, Alice
Childress, and Underground (if memory serves). Other tunes played (in no
particular order, and again from a foggy memory): One Angry Dwarf, Steven's,
Smoke, Fair, Selfless Cold & Composed, Song For The Dumped. That's all I can
remember now, but I'm sure someomne else will post a setlist. The most
annoying thing was no encore.
Regarding the 4-piece string section. They played a 5-10 minute overture
before the boyz came out which was pretty cool. And during songs like
Selfless Cold the strings worked really well. For the most part however, I
found the strings distracting, and they seemed to overshadow Ben's piano at
times. The whole show, I found myself wishing the string section would just
go away so the guys could just let loose. Don't get me wrong, the strings
were not that overbearing for the most part, just at times. And there were a
couple of tunes where the strings did not play at all. But, in all fairness,
this was the first gig with the string section, so I guess they have to work
it out. Ben actually said during the show "It feels good to actually be
nervous for a gig!" (I guess he was referring to the string section)

The band that followed BFF was Morphine. Another 3 piece band. The singer
plays a 2-string bass and is a cross between Jim Morrison and Lou Reed. It
started off kinda lame, but by the 3rd or 4th tune I was really into. Some
funky stuff. The Morphine fans around me suggested I pick up their album
called "Cure For Pain" which I think I will do. It was a pretty cool scene -
the Morphine fans got really into BFF, and the BFF fans got into Morphine.

I actually missed the first band, so I can't comment. But I'm getting off
topic now, so I'll just shut up.

BTW, my top 10 is: (just kiding)

Peace, Love and Ben,
Brian Schachter

correctly:

One Angry Dwarf
Philosophy
Brick
Song for the dumped
Alice Childress
Kate
Smoke
Uncle Walter
Stevens last night
Video
Missing the war
Boxing

Whatever =7
BFF = 5

But let me say, they both have different things about them that make em
great! It's so hard to pick & choose like this. I hope this doesn't piss
anyone off.

mine before it gets old.

Here we go!
1. One Angry Dwarf

5. Selfless
6. Underground *
7. Smoke *
8. Uncle Walter
9. Best Imitation *
10. Battle of Who
11. Last Polka ************************
12. Boxing

5 from Whatever, 7 from BF5.
The star means that it was so so so tough to decide. I'm sure if you ask me
any other day, I'd reply differently.
OK, I hope I did this right...

Last night Ben introduced the 4 piece string section at NY summerstage.
The strings added the most to Selfless and Smoke. It was 95degrees and
humid, so there wasn't too much joking around etc.
The Set list was

One Angry Dwarf
Fair
Selfless Cold & Composed
Kate
Underground
Steven
Smoke
Alice Childress
? (Instrumental soundtrack type with badabapabaaaa vocals by all three)
Song for the Dumped
Philosophy

someone's fave parts in a back issue and had to throw mine in:

did anyone else notice how uncomfortable Robert looked when Conan came up and
shook his hand?
...you think Rockford files is cool, baby (OK, does anyone else think that
this came directly as a result of BFF playing with Counting Crows? Because
if you've heard the first Crows CD, August and Everything After, there's a
song called "Perfect Blue Buildings", in which Duritz says "Just down the
street from your hotel, baby" with the "baby" in the EXACT SAME TONE AND
VOICE!)

Most of you probably already know this (it was probably posted before, and I
just didn't read it or something), but there's a contest Caroline Records is
putting on for fans of BFF. If you have a picture of BFF and yourself, you
can submit it in hopes of it being in the next album's liner notes. You'll
also be a part of the thank you's. Here's part of the newsletter that I got
the info from:

>>He plays a keyboard...they have a drum 'n' bass...but they're acoustic as
hell and twice as cute. The Ben Folds Five return with an archive recording
later this fall and we're giving you a chance to join in the fun! Drop by the
Transit Headlines for more info on this and other breaking news...

Look it up for more info. The contest ends sometime in July, I think. =)
Hope one of the subscribers to the Armchair win!
