i was flipping through channels today, and was ecstatic to come upon the
Battle video, and when it was over, i realized something: they showed
Battle on CNN!!! unfortunately, CNN doesn't post their listing in my
local TV Magazine, so i have no idea what kind of show it was on. did
anyone else catch that or know anything about it?

this is about identifying other bffers at the bff show...do you know how
when theres a concert and people buy the t shirts at the start and wear
them the whole damn show? well i hate that, and am caught in a
dilemma...if i wear my bff shirt to horde i got at cleveland, than
people may think the same thing...because they are selling the same
shirts probably...so i thought, why dont we all draw a HUGE OVERSTUFFED
ARMCHAIR ON THE BACK OF OURS,in permanent marker(unless you are all very
caring of your textiles, and would not harm them) i think this is a
great idea, because it solves both the dilemma of wearing an old shirt,
and not looking like a newbie, and identifying felloy
chairpersons...what do you think?

Subject: Latest Dream
A couple of nights ago I dreamed that I ran across this really cool
FOLDABLE Baldwin baby grand piano. I know I know, such things don't
really exist, but that just made it even cooler. It was still pretty big
even when folded -- about as big as two shopping carts. Of course, I
purchased it promptly, and wheeled it around town showing every one,
saying, "Hey, look! I've got a Baldwin baby grand, just like Ben Folds!"
And even after I woke up and thought about the dream, the symbolism
(FOLDing piano, Ben FOLDS) didn't even strike me for the longest time.
(Wait a minute... Strike? Sledge?)
Regarding somebody else's dream posted here recently, I think it's very
interesting that a number of different people have all dreamed about the
boys being pissed off or annoyed at us. I guess that comes from a fear
we carry that our idols won't think we're cool. If we fear rejection, we
fear it most from those we most admire.
This reminds me of that dream I had in which Ben was pissed off at me
because I jumped on stage and played the piano while he was playing the
melodica, and he said that the fact that I wasn't a union musician meant
that the band would lose their food stamp privileges. But I already
posted about that a while back, so enough of that.
BTW, I'm hoping to find the time this weekend to count the cover song
votes.

Subject: my trip to chapel hill... as if anyone cares
yesterday i went to chapel hill ('cause i happened to be sort of in the area
or something and i wanted to be able to say i'd been to bff's hometown 'cause
i'm weirdl like that). i felt so cool when my friend was using the pay phone
just off franklin st... i noticed that the location listed on the phone was
"hardback cafe" but the place it was in front of was called something
else.... all i could think was "the hardback cafe closed down, now we've got
office town" (i hope that's how the words go). i never would have thought to
look for such a thing, but it was so spiffy stumbling onto it like that. and
on the way out of town, purely by accident, i drove past mitchell lane.
though i've never heard the song, it was another warm fuzzy moment. for
anyone who's actually read this whole post, thanks for listening to my
insignificant babble...

In #381, Adrian wrote:
>...I...heard him [Robert] complaining... about the antics of the crowd

I'll preface this by saying that I'm not attacking any A-charian.
In Robert's defense, he plays in front of thousands of audiences where
everyone is pogo-ing and it doesn't upset him. Its only when a member of the
audience gets too close that he becomes guarded. He doesn't know their
intentions. For instance, at the recent festival in Atlanta a few beer
bottles were thrown on stage. One of Darren's drumsticks was knocked out of
his hand by these apparent fans. Dangerous? I liken it to the Saturday Night
Live skit called "When babies attack" where otherwise harmless and babbling
babies grow fangs and hook themselves to your unsuspecting body.
"When fans become inebriated" is what I like to call it.
Besides this, it takes a great deal of effort to fix equipment like pedals,
mics or tube amps when you are in a foreign town without any resources so the
whole band tends to be touchy about keeping their gear in working order, away
from anyone not associated with the band.
No A-chairian would do this sort of thing, so I feel like a teacher who
lectures her "good" students, who show up for class everyday, about skipping
class because she can't find the "bad" students who skip it every day. At
least that's what I heard happens.
Thats all for today

write a proper review so I'll just add to Anthony's....

Definitely!! That's where I was, looking right down on Ben's hands
as he played. Perfect view of Darren , Robert and string quartet
too :-)
> the pit being a smoky, sweaty hot sauna of

yeah what happened to all those balloons anyway? For those of you
who weren't there, during the interminable wait after the support
bands some kind soul kept us amused by blowing up balloons (no
honestly, they *were* balloons) for a sort of slow-motion volleyball
except that some people kept bursting them. When the band finally
came on stage, Ben and Robert went out of their way to join in
during the first song.

I dunno their name but I thought they sounded quite good. Got right
to the last song before I started making comparisons with other bands
but the singer did writhe about a bit like Jarvis only he was
thinner! Reminded me more of a young Mick Jagger.

no, not just you! The singer sounded just like Joe Pasquale (UK
comedian whose trade-mark is a funny high-pitched voice). Made me
laugh nearly as much....

A melodica is/was a commercially produced thing and I have seen Ben
play one before but this was just a mini keyboard with a mouthpiece.

It was the set list which made the show, I'm sure. It was just
perfectly balanced. Simply wonderful!

so wonderful that I've forgotten it too!! I started to memorise it
but I just got so absorbed in the performance. But if anyone posts
it, you'll see what we mean...

That was SO excellent - they sounded just like the Beastie Boys!

Uncle Walter was the last song on the set list (according to a fellow
Armchair member who was right at the front ) but I guess we just ran
out of time.
They had a great rapport with the audience from the moment they
stepped onstage and tremendous energy throughout. Highlights for me
were Song for the dumped, Smoke, Been down since day one and the way
Ben played the piano keys with a microphone in each hand. And
Robert's cool shoes ;-)

Subject: The Cranberries song in every movie ever made...
Yep, you guessed it! Dreams! OK, I really wanted to do this dream thing,
since I've had not one, not two, but THREE BFF dreams in the course of my
life. Short descriptions here, don't wanna take up a whole Armchair!
1) I dreamed that BFF was having a concert in this huge amphitheatre which
has been in my dreams before...it's painted yellow and orange, like sunrays,
and it has a little landscape painted at the bottom (this is on the back wall
of the stage) and a black (duh!) stage. So I dreamed that BFF was having
this concert there...but I wasn't at the concert. I was hanging around this
yellow truck (yes, THE yellow truck) and listening from afar. Eventually Ben
came up to me and asked if I wanted to go for a ride. Naturally I said yes,
and we drove off in the Ryder.
2) I dreamed that BFF came to play at my school, of all places! They put on
this concert (it wasn't even in our theatre!) in the back parking lot. About
30 people were there. In the dream, Robert came down from playing bass and
starting chasing me...he caught me in our social studies hall and kissed me.
(EXCELLENT dream, best of the three!)
3) I dreamed that I was at Ben's house. (this was while they were recording
WAEA) I was sort of his personal secretary and was trying to answer the
phone in time to not interrupt recording (I SWEAR this was before I had even
heard anything about the real phone in Steven's) and I was trying to listen
to the recordings. Ben and Darren had on galoshes, rubber ones. Weirdest
dream of the three.
Well, there ya go, three dreams packaged into one, long, pointless
letter...oh wait! I put something in another letter that never made it in!
>I'll indulge myself and send in my top 12 now, just to be ornery...wait,
this is TOO hard for me...each song has it's own special je nais sais qiou
(?????) (I just wanted to sound smart--and prove a point) How about this:
instead of picking our fave songs off of each album, list your favorite
parts of songs...
Example: The excellent harmonizing on Where's Summer B?...the three separate
jamming parts on Song For The Dumped...the bridge of Evaporated..."yeah, and
she breathes" in Kate...Robert and Darren ALONE on "Underground"...Ben's
little sigh at the end of "Brick"...the way they all sound like chickens on
"Fair"!!!!
These are only a FEW of the many delights that I get when listening to a BFF
album...I'm sure others have many more!
>
That's about it...have a lovely Fourth of July, Americans! (Don't take
offense, British, I love ya'll too! And Canadians! You're all so MUCH
funnier than us!)
Toodles!
