About the lyrics, I don't think that the song is pro-life or
pro-choice, it just tells how shitty abortions make people feel. I helped
a friend get one earlier this summer and it felt absolutely horrible. I
wasn't even personally invovled in it, I was just there for support, but I
actually felt like retching a couple times. The song perfectly shows how
hard it is to do something like that, especially for young people. Anyway,
that's more serious than I've been in a long time. My brain is starting to
hurt from it. I'd better go.;) Laters!

this is just a short little note with an observation i made.

whenever i talk to fellow indiana bff fans, they talk about how nobody
in this state knows who they are. however, out of all the horde shows,
i think the indiana horde go-ers posted the most reviews. maybe we're
all just obsessed.

hmm....

by the way, here's an interesting tidbit of info. robert told me that
the reason they want no airplay is because they WANT it that way. i
mean, they're on a sony label. he says sony could buy them a career if
they wanted them to. but they don't. they told sony they wanted to do
it on their own. you gotta respect that.

woo...what a weekend.
ok...so horde was awesome. i met ben, robert (+girlfriend), and
darren for the second time and actually didn't sound like an absolute
dumbass. the first time i met them, all i could say was "umm...hi" (i hated
myself for that one) robert commented on my chapel hill shirt, asking if
that was an officially sanctioned product of chapel hill... the actual
performance was great! i was right against the rails right in front of ben.
(If anyone saw me...i'm short with short brown hair) i stayed to watch
morphine... some of their fans are psychotic or something...some chickie
was trying to mesmorize the lead singer with weird hand
movements...weird...hmmmm....
bad, bad karma... On the way home ....MY TRANSMISSION BLEW (!!!)
UP...we were driving down the road...heard this horrible grinding
sound...shook like crazy...and flew (!) down this massive
embankment...everything locked up and the middle section where the shifter
is cracked in half and exploded out...somehow we made it out okay... thank
god i was in a fat volvo station wagon...never again
thanks for listening to my blabber...

Just to add to the whole "Come On, Eileen" thing: Save Ferris, a
female-fronted ska/pop/swing band from sunny Southern California is highly
known for their cover of "Come On, Eileen." In fact, it's going to be the
first single and video off their new album on Epic Records (to which they
just got signed to). So, if you people start hearing a cover of "Come On,
Eileen" on the radio or on MTV, you'll know where it came from... Awww,
shucks. Ben didn't get to it first! =)

<<are the stickers that are being given out a "5" with Darren, Ben and Robert
in little squares placed on the 5? Or, are they different than that?>>

The stickers being given out at H.O.R.D.E. are not the "5" stickers. They're
smaller squares, dark brown, and vinyl... with "Ben Folds Five" across the
top and drawings of the piano, bass, and drum kit. I believe these stickers
are the same ones being given out in the record stores with the promo
cassettes. (And just to make it clear, I DO NOT have any more tapes left,
nor do I have enough stickers to give out. I only grabbed 2 or 3 at
H.O.R.D.E. If I had a few dozen, I'd give them out). The "5" stickers with
the pics of the boys... well, I only assume they had something to do with the
release of "Whatever and Ever, Amen." I just recently got one (thanks
Austin!), and it's pretty cool.

Subject: Bootlegs

Just because nobody asked, here is my opinion on bootlegs & bootlegging

First off, no band loses money because of bootlegs. Anyone who buys or
trades a bootleg of a given band obviously would be a big fan of said
band. It follows that that person has already bought everything that the
band has officially released. The bootleg material fills a void that the
band ( or at least it's label, has decided not to fill )

I happen to be a HUGE fan of a certain band ( not BFF ). I have dozens
of their official releases, albums, singles, videos, t-shirts, etc. I've
seen them play live 61 times. Also, I have over 100 bootlegs, again
albums, singles, videos, t-shirts, etc. The quality of some of the
bootleg material is crap - that's the risk I took when I bought it. But,
I never considered it the bands fault that the quality was bad IT'S A
BOOTLEG!

Consider the case of one of the biggest bands in the world ( who most of
you on this, The Magical Armchair, probably couldn't care less about )
Metallica. They achieved platinum status before they ever had a video on
MTV or airplay on any major radio stations. It was people like us, FANS,
who bought those albums. How did the Metallifans find out about the
band? TAPE TRADING! 99% of tape traders never make any money on their
tapes and the 1% who do, the 'bootleggers' don't make that much.

The thing that I've noticed about Armchair traders is that you guys are
WAY too smart. Calm down, this tape tree stuff is a bit extreme. Meet
people at shows and via the 'chair' GIVE them some shows. They have to
get started somewhere. Trading is just that, trading. You don't have any
shows to trade? 2 blank tapes should be able to get you 1 tape of a
show. Uhoh, the guy with the show tape just made a 1 tape profit - damn
bootlegger!

One more thing - these 22 foot tall mic stands with omni directional
mics attached to an 8 channel DAT recorder running off of 3 Diehard car
batteries are a bit much. In my day ( now I sound like my dad ) after
walking to school barefoot in the snow uphill both directions, I would
SNEAK a Sony Walkman R2 into the show. Sure I got caught a time or 2.
Maybe I took it back to the car, maybe I tried again. THAT'S HALF THE
FUN!!!
It's supposed to be fun, remember.

I quit taping ( and trading ) when I found that 1200 cassette tapes take
up a lot of space. Oh, and I got a life.

Sorry to sound so 'Angry', you all can stop being so 'Solemn'

I'll go back to lurking know. See some of you at Pine Knob ( Frank? )

This is not in reply to the Chuck Folds content but the Horde content of this
post. First, I guess joshu@umr.edu hasn't ever been to Riverport in St.
Louis before. I would like to say also that the first stage fuckin rocked.
Squirell Nut ZIppers rocked(and got more response than Toad or Big head
Todd), Primus was unbelievable(Les is a god, well, the whole band rules), and
Neil Young was incredible. I would have paid the admission price just to sit
and watch Neil and Crazy Horse play. And don't forget the opening main stage
act Medeski,Martin, and Wood who were really incredible. But...Ben Folds Five
took the show in my opinion. And as far as Riverport prices go, every
concert charges 10$ for parking. The food is always exorbitantly priced so
this shouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone either. And BFF was never
scheduled to play mainstage. It had been posted on Horde's web site for
months that they were playing the side stage. Also, if they had been
planning on playing mainstage and were switched last minute...then I wouldn't
have had a conversation with Ben about their new tour bus at the 2nd stage
enterance. OK. thanx for listenin to my ramblings,
Josh

p.s.yes I met and talked to ben and had my picture taken w/ him and Robert(I
snuck in a camera)

And for those of you that didn't know, Ben played drums and piano on

Subject: horde newspaper review

here is part of an article from "the indianapolis star" about the two
bands they thought made going to the second stage at horde worthwhile:
morphine and ben folds five.
- -----------------------------------------------------------
spending a day at a summer rock festival's second stage means any or all
the the following: standing in the blazing sun; dodging people (and
their cigarettes) as they walk by; trying to see over the 6-foot-6 guy
who inevitably digs in directly in front of you.

it requires commitment, not to mention stamina--all to see 30-minute
sets.

at this year's horde festival, two of the five second-stage
acts--morphine and ben folds five-- made the effort worthwhile.

morphine went on in darkness--appropriately, since its baritone
sax-bass-drums sound brought to mind a deserted street corner and a hint
of danger. "early to bed, early to rise/makes a man or woman miss out
on the nightlife," mark sandman sang.

with dana colley blowing a dusky, rattling sax and billy conway adding
slinky drum parts (think variations on "secret agent man"), the set was
both cool and menacing.

ben folds five had almost the exact opposite wound. since their last
appearance here, on the second stage of lollapalooza '96, the group has
added a four-piece string section. the violins, viola and cello bring
an urgency to folds' bouncy, quirky, piano based pop songs.

thirty minutes of pianist folds isn't nearly enough, but it gave a taste
of what he and the band can do--from a pop waltz (smoke) to a grandiose
billy joel-like intro for philosophy to a love unlimited orchestra-style
middle passage during fair.
- -----------------------------------------------

pretty good review, huh?

Okay, so I do believe I failed the map portion of the ben folds five lyrics
quiz. I just got back from a whirlwind week-long tour east of the
Mississippi (but obviously not to Chapel Hill) and what do I discover upon
returning? You are all right, of course Cameron and Rosemary do not
intersect. Forgive me for my early onset of memory lapses--I've been away
from Chapel Hill for awhile. I confess that I did not take geography classes
in college and my art classes basically led me to take round-about creative
routes in my daily activities (which included quite a few trips to the
arcade on Franklin--to anyone at UNC, I suggest not skipping class to play
pinball...showing up late to class because you saw a great band like bff the
night before, however, might be excused.)

Anyway... for anyone coordinating their local-high-school-ben-folds-five
field trips to Chapel Hill, Rosemary and *Columbia* intersect (which is what
I meant in an earlier post), not Cameron. Cameron is where you try to park
your car if it's raining and cold and you don't feel like riding your bike
from Carrboro to class. Confused? Me too. Call the chamber of commerce,
if you have any further questions...

btw, I had a brief altercation (a polite one, of course) at my local dmv for
not wanting to relinquish my real i.d., which had been signed by bff and had
since expired. I figured I had gone through the trouble of feeling like a
little kid when I asked them to sign it, so I should be entitled to keep it.
After confirming my identity at the dmv, I promptly left and, wouldn't you
know it, I "lost" my old license so I got to keep it. Ben wrote on the back
(and this is edited in case my grandpa subscribes to the armchair), "Don't
give her a ticket ***hole." Sorry Ben, it's too late for that, but thanks
for your support in the battle against traffic citations (their new song to
be released as a B-side in August).
