Hi folks,
I got the latest issue of CMJ New Music Monthly yesterday, and there was
a review of a band called Super Deluxe. The review compared their songs
to Squeeze, Queen, and mentioned that they had great 4-part harmonies
and a piano.
Well, this had me thinking of you-know-who, so I hunted down the cd that
night. They sound nothing like Ben Folds Five, and are nowhere NEAR as
original or talented, but it's actually a great record. The lead singer
sounds a lot like Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze, so they get points right
there.
If anyone else has this record, "Via Satellite," let me know your
opionion.

Hi,
I've got a request: could someone, if it hasn't been done already, who has a vast knowledge of the boys and their performances, compile a list of which songs have been re-aranged somewhere between the recording studio and a live performance. I think so
meone who has alot of concert tapes could put together a list quite quickly. I good list would include the song and how it has been changed, i.e. "Song for the Dumped" gets japanese lyrics added, "Julianne" gets a funky intro, etc, etc, etc. I'd really
like to hear how many songs get changed over time (I know its a kick to hear a familiar song played differently when you see them live). Also any lyric changes would also fit in the list. If anyone would post any info they have on the armchair or send i
t to me, I'd be willing to complie a post a somewhat-comprehnsive list. if this has already been done, please post it.
Thanx,
John Maynard

yeah i did catch the arias last night. I taped the whole thing
just to see Ben on it. He announced the winner for the
best Australian Jazz record, with the lead singer from Cake.
I loved it, although I would have loved it more if he had of
performed. I also caught 1 angry dwarf in the background
of the first award :)
shit yeah it's cool!

I haven't heard anything official to that nature, but if it's a rumor
floating around it may be true because I know they've done this in
concerts months back. That should truely be interesting to hear and it's
one of my favorite little songs by Elvis off my definitely fave album by
him. I'd sure love to hear them do "Welcome to the Working Week" also; I
could just hear them "bouncifying" it. On a rather unrelated note, I'm
still waiting for Ben to admit his love for the Cardigans... The band
*has* made the first step by admitting how they could beat them up. :)

well, since there has been a lot of barry black talk out here lately
and i do have the CD, i am sort of begrudgingly making my first post,
in an effort to hopefully help those who are wondering about the CD on
which Ben and Darren contribute their talents. the CD (which is
self-titled) is a good kind of jazzy, bluesy, dixie, piece of work,
it's mostly instrumental and it is chock-full-o-slammin-musicians,
including Eric Bachman(archers of loaf); there's also a vocalist on
track 5, Summer Burke, anyone know if this is Summer B? anyway, i
found it to be a tough listen at first. on the whole, there are few
vocals, and i tend to enjoy plush harmonies a la BF5 or Jellyfish --
ya know, good CDs to sing along to in the car. so, if you're not
independently wealthy, my recommendation on this one is to try to
listen before you buy...i like the CD, but not for the same reasons
that i like BF5...

Bloody buggery...(for those of you who object to swearing, that's
"Bother, darnit").....I CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED THE FIVE ON THE ARIAS!!!
Goddammit....and do you know why I missed it? I had to study for a
biology test! At least I got to hear them on the ladies' lounge,
although that was a fairly lacklustre interview.
Not so cheerful today,

And now, food for thought: "Is biology essential for life?" (not in my
book it isn't...)

Hello There Everyone on The Armchair!!!
I have just got to say that Ben Folds Five were the greatest at
Martin Place today. Even though it was raining before, during and after
the show, they really rocked the place out.
Ben, Darren and Rob were so nice that they stayed back in the
cold to sign my CD covers and also have a photo with me, as well as
everyone else that were lucky enough to be there. Today is one of the
best days in my life, even better than meeting superfish Scott Miller.
Eversince I heard their CD 2 years ago I was hooked and now I
play their CD's all the time. They are Legends!!!
One question though. Where can I get piano music?? Please let me
know.
Just a very BIG THANK YOU to Ben Folds Five for coming to
Australia. Sorry for the horrible weather.
Can't wait 'till the Sydney Uni gig.

on the Real World and they also played BOWCCL on Road Rules last
Monday. AAUGH, but I feel better for baring my soul. Elizabeth, MTV plus
plus Silk Stalkings. . I am pitiful : -)
Also about the Chicago show on 10/30. . tickets will probably go on sale
this Saturday through Ticketmaster. However, its not confirmed.
(Sidenote: I hate Ticketmaster, its too bad Pearl Jam gave up the fight.)
Ticketmaster updates their site every Friday. The Chicago Reader is also
on-line which is updated Thursday pm/Friday am which lists upcoming
events and when tix go on sale.

Subject: cornell info
When I heard bff was going to be coming to cornell, i called my cousin
who teaches there and talked to him. So far I know:
It'll probably be at a place called Bailey Hall, and tickets will be $14-16
for non-students and $10-12 for students, but they're not on sale yet. Also,
it will probably be an any age show (yay!) I'll post more info when I get
it. Anyone from Albany NY going? I'll be there, I just have to work out a
few details (like how to get there when it's 3 hours away, i'm 2 years short
of my drivers licsence, and it's on a school night.)
Also, for those who are complaining BFF is not coming to their town: I
can understand you, they're not coming to my town exactly either. And then I
thought, what about the fans in Alaska and Hawaii? I looked at Frank's
previous gigs page and found out that BFF has been to Hawaii only twice a long
time ago, and that they've never been to Alaska. So just be happy you're
not an Alaskan BFF fan.

PLEASE HELP ME GET TO A BF5 SHOW!!!!!
Hi everyone. With school and everything I had somewhat neglected my
armchair reading, but I read the latest one, checked out Frank's site, and
sure enough.... the tour dates were announced!!!! However, they are not
coming to the Washington DC area, to my chagrin. I am originally from
Cleveland OH and they're playing there on Halloween!!!! I am so sad that I
will miss that awesome awesome awesome show!!!! :( :( . So, what I am
wondering is if anyone from around DC is going to the Philly or Pittsburgh
shows or any other shows and is going to be going through DC. I have no
car. I have very little money and so it is hard to take a train up to
Pitts. or Philly to see them. I think those are the 2 closest to me. So,
if there are any loving Virginia, Maryland, DC people out there that can
help me out, I would love you forever.
PLEASE HELP ME GET TO A BF5 SHOW!!!!!
Thanks everyone. Stay awesome. Luv, Heather

I ordered 5 BFF singles online form SirenCD. The address is
http://sirencd.com/
From what I understand, they are pretty reliable. They have the following
singles:
Kate (Part 2) w/ "Mitchell Lane" and "All Shook Up"
One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces w/ "Bad Idea" and "For All the Pretty
People"
Underground (Part 1) w/ live versions of "Satan Is My Master" and "Video"
Underground (Part 2) w/ live versions of "Jackson Cannery" and "Underground"
Where's Summer B? w/ live versions of "Tom & Mary" and "Emaline"
All of these singles are only $9.99, which is pretty reasonable. The
shipping is only $4.50. I ordered all of them last week, and I haven't
gotten them yet, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
Also, I'm intersted in info about the Chicago show on October 30. All I know
about it is that it is at the Vic Theatre. If you know anything else, let me
know.

hi
just thought I'd say that the lunch time concert in Sydney yesterday was GREAT!
It was amazing to be less than 1m away from Ben and Robert, and to be able
to get signatures and photos afterwards, which is something I couldn't
expect from an actual concert. It was a bit disappointing that they only
played 5 songs, which lasted about 20 mins. The set was
One Angry Dwarf
Battle
Philosophy
Julianne
Underground
and then they went over to TripleJ and played very interesting versions of
Angry Dwarf and Song for the Dumped.
So I guess that'll be the sum total of me seeing them in Australia. But it
was great anyway!!
C
PS I'll be getting photos developed and that for those who were there if you
need copies or anything.

I went to a local record store recently, and came out happy for once.
As I flipped through the Ben Folds Five divider I found two import CD's
that I've never heard of (possibly since I haven't collected any BFF
imports/rarities)...they are: Ben Folds Five "Underground" Part 1 and 2
(both CDs). I'm not really sure if this is such a rare find or what,
but I was just happy that there was a BFF section.
The track listings are:
Underground Pt. 1:
1.) Underground (edit)
2.) Satan is My Master (live)
3.) Video (live)
Underground Pt. 2:
1.) Underground (full version)
2.) Jackson Cannery (live)
3.) Underground (live)
They're both made in England on Caroline Records. Well, I guess that's
all - if you have any comments/questions about these or own them, feel
free to comment.
One more thing, thanks to the couple of people that e-mailed me because
they are going to the October 23rd show in St. Petersburg at the State
Theatre (counting down the days). If you'd like to get in contact with
each other just e-mail me or the list and maybe we could all set
something up. And it's nice knowing there are some fellow
Armcharians/Helmet Heads in south Florida.
Take care all and best wishes,
