I guess I was extremely lucky to meet Ben, but I was really suprised I was
the only one. The story goes something like this...
BFF was coming to First Ave. in Minneapolis and a couple of my friends and
I decided to go. We wanted to feel liek a group so we all had U-90
Alternative shirts on. I had a spare and I thought it'd be money to give
it to Ben, Darren or Robert. The line to get in the doors that we had to
wait in curled around the building past the side door, and that's where we
were standing when Ben and Kate (I think it was Kate) came out of it. I
instantly recognized him from the W&EA album, but not a SINGLE other fan
standing in line recognized him. I promply stuck out my hand and said "
Ben, I really love your music". His reply was something like "thanks,
man". He was in quite a hurry and quickly walked (hand in hand w/ Kate)
down the sidewalk... no one tried to say hi or even noticed it was him.
I didn't think my day could get any better until I remembered that I
had the extra T-shirt with me. I ran down the sidewalk (Ben & Kate were
only 1/2 block away) until I was in earshot of the two and called out
Ben's name. He turned around and I handed him the U-90 T-shirt and said
something like "Merry Christmas, man". Ben just smiled and put the shirt
over his shoulder, said thanks and turned around and kept walking (they
had a photographer with them at the time.) I guess I was just at the
right place at the right time.
A note: I played a lot of football in high school and usually was put on
the line. Why does this matter? Because the shirt I gave Ben fit me.. it
was a XXL. Ben DOES NOT wear an XXL shirt (probably an L or M). So the
chances of seeing him in it are pretty slim... but who knows. Could
happen, (just like meeting Ben Folds could).
On the moshing issue.. I enjoy moshing, but at the First Ave show, I
jumped up and down, not all around. I have no problem with people doing
whatever they want in their own personal bubble, but If they invate mine,
it could be a problem. Case in point: Some dude in fromt of me was looped
up on something and when ballistic late in the show. The two small
females standing near him were being pummelled by this guy and didn't
appreciate it. I had to step in and calm this guy down by holding him
against other moshers. I guess the moral of the story is "don't invade
other people's space"
sorry about rambling...

Hi everyone,
I put a post up a few weeks back about whether I should see Ben Folds or
the Blood Hound Gang, at livid. Anyway I saw Ben Folds and they were
great!! Ben was a great showman playing up to the crowd and stuff. About
their set it was supposed to go for 45 mins but only weht for about 35, not
that that matters, The first song they played was OAD and the mosh pit just
went off. Then they played julianne, with a wierd intro, and the whole
crowd got into it, I can't remember the rest of the order but they played
steven's last nite.., underground (in which they changed the lyrics from
"hand me my nose ring" to "hand me my cock ring") song for the dumped,
philopsophy, I can't remember what else but it was a great show! This guy
behind me in the pit said that it was one of the best acts he had ever
seen (and he had seen Pearl Jam at Easter Creek, I think thats what he
said). The crowd went off to all the songs, except Steven last nite.. and
since thay finished ealry I was able to race over and catch the end of the
blood hound gang, who went for nearly 20mins over they were suppose to.
thanks for listening to me bable.

Well confused lyrics seem to be the new trend here, so these are the
lines I've been singing along to for the past few months.
Kate
"Down by the Rosemary and Cameron, she hands out the bong of Evita"
"When all words fail she speaks, through mixed tapes and mastered keeps"
BOWCCL
"Why don't we pitch it to the Franklin brothers' pit, find neutered
portraits of General Apathy and..."
One Angry Dwarf
"September '75, I was 47 inches high, if I could have smoked cigarettes
I would have. Banner, here's another G.I. Joe for your little minds to
blow"
...and those are only the ones that I've found out are wrong. But on the
heavy songs where articulation isn't perfect, it's really the music that
we love anyway, isn't it?

Finally got to see BFF yesterday at Livid in Brisbane. Was a little
worried I would get crushed or something before their set but I survived to
see them from a really good vantage point. They opened with Angry Dwarf
whiich got the crowd really worked up. The rest of the set(in no
particular order) was Philosophy, Julianne, Underground, Dumped, Kate,
Steves Last Night... and Theme From Dr Pyser. I don't think I missed
anything. The most well recieved song was of course underground, seeing as
Triple j flogged it to death last year. It was probably the only song half
of the crowd knew and wanted to see. The whole crowd was jumping and
dancing to it with big singalongs. My favorite from the set was Stevens...
I always have loved this song and it ws great to see it live. Ben really
worked up the audience, he is a real showman. Excellent sound quality,
view and everything made it the highlight of my day (BFF should have closed
the day, not Devo) The only problem was they only played for about 35
minutes. They were scheduled for 45 mins. Tehy were the only
international act on the main stage with a short set. Cake, Powderfinger
(who I can see any other time) sPiderbait, Veruca Salt and Reef all got 1hr
slots. All in all a brilliant day (what I can remember of it) except I
missed Sneaker Pimps.

someone stated:
<<On another front, I just got tickets to the BFF gig at the Supper Club
Nov. 6. I haven't gotten tickets through Ticketmaster in a long time.
It's outrageous! The Supper Club tix are $15 each, and Ticketmaster
charges an extra $5 per ticket plus a $3 order fee. Is this normal, or
just Ticketmaster in New York? Needless to say, I'm not doing this
again!>>
This is normal. Ticket Master is the biggest bullshit...Nothing else to
really say except I wish Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament had been backed
stronger when they presented congress with evidence of Ticket Master's
monopoly of the business. Pearl Jam still hardly ever uses a Ticket Master
venue. On their 96 tour in support of No Code they didn't and on their
upcoming tour they won't either. But BFF is no Pearl Jam. Ok, now you know
why they are called Ticket Bastard and why you will always pay exorbitant
fees.

I've been kind of a silent observer to this mosh debate lately, but i
figured, why not throw in my 0.02? I agree with the statement that there are
certain shows where moshing is fine (Pantera.. Zombie...etc). I also agree
that BFF (along with MANY others) is NOT moshing music. Unfortunately, the
sorts of people who're gonna start a mosh pit at a BFF show are also the
sorts of people who really couldn't care less about getting in the next guy's
face when he's just enjoying the show.
And on the topic of ska shows....<<People have absolutely no business being
at ska shows unless they know how to skank..>> is one of the most blantantly
holier-than-thou, elitist, idiotic statement about music i've ever seen. A
little harsh, yes, but think about it: Everyone started listening to a kind
of music at one time. People gave you a shot to "be cool enough" to listen to
ska, so why not grant that to others?

Hey, I became a loyal fan of many bands just by going to concerts. I have
no clue how to skank but that wouldnt stop me from going to a ska concert.
Friends drag you out to concerts to see the music, not so you can become a
part of some click. You can enjoy a band and not have to go compleatly
hardcore. And just so you know, ive been to yanni and primus all in one
month so there are people out there with a wide range of concerts. I know
when to mosh and when not to. BFF isn't exactly the place for it. But
anyway, if people didn't go to concerts where they didnt know the bands or
the type of music, then what would be the point, youd never drag in new
fans. its quite a narrowminded way of thinking.

Hey all!
**Firstly: BFF were totally, unbelievable awesome at POW!!!
**Secondly: Big thankyou and *long, distance hug* to my mystery hero(s)
who saved me on Friday night. Yes, I did get to go to the gig and am
totally in debt to someone very special (though doomed to a life of Rose
Tatoo records!).
**Thirdly: Thanks for all your help Frank. My message was legit. and I
promise never to terrorize your mailbox again <grin>
**Fourthly: Excellent to meet you Sarah, post me and tell about the rest of
your night.
Now, to the gig. POW just had a totally different feel to it. Smaller
room, heaps better sound, older crowd. And BFF were SOOO pumped when they
came out. Ben was in such a talkative mood. Told us great story about how
his piano was taken off him for the POW gig because of his performance on
the Midday Show and because POW was a "Less than reputable" venue(?) and
gave us a quick musical demonstration explaining how the closest genre to
Death Metal was Polka music! They played a totally different set list to
last Friday, only I really can't remember the order.
Basic rundown: Steven's last night in town
One Angry Dwarf
Where's Summer B? - Excellent surprise
Selfless
Missing the War
Philosophy
Imitation - with Ben playing the piano with two microphones and Rob
playing a Double Bass
Brick - Totally beautiful, with Rob bowing the Bass.
Battle of Who could careless
The Ulitimate Sacrifice - A charming little satantic ditty dedicated to
Kerri-Ann and Jeffery
Jackson Cannery
The Last Polka
Fair
Kate
Underground
Julianne
ENCORE: Uncle Walter - Finally!!! It totally rocked!
Song for the Dumped
I am sure the Sarah could probably tell you the exact order ( I can't
believe it - I am STILL pupmed!) but its all a bit of a daze. Even got to
meet the boys afterwards this time <Thanks, Doug>. They were just so
god-damn nice! Ben was the perfect host, making sure we were sufficently
fed and always with a beverage. Darren was just really cute and quiet (I
am sure he's not really that shy!) and Rob was just a riot. Even got to
accompany Mr. Sledge for post gig drinks. Pity I had to take my extremely
drunken brother home (don't you hate frustrated musicians!)
I know this post hasn't been as eloquent as the last, but I really can't
explain what a good time I had or how incredibly amazing the guys were!
Can't wait till they come back!
To Doug, Allan, Rupert, Ben, Rob, Darren, the sound guy (who's name eludes
me at the moment) and everyone else I met - thankyou for a Supreme Night!
Must leave you. I have to stare at my photo of Ben and me for a little
while. Back to lurker mode.
Cheers, Janelle
P.S After reading the posts after the last week, I think an International
Darren Jesse Appreciation Day should be announced! Anyone opposed?
