Subject: Can someone settle an arguement for me?

  Hello there....
Picture the scenario.3 friends sitting in a bedroom
having a little BF5 mini disco. "Brick" is playing.
1 says "i reckon this song is about his girlfriend dying of cancer.."
(seriously) 2 says " don`t be stupid, its obvious that he doesn`t love
his girlfriend anymore and shes the brick that is making him drown. He
loves someone else. 1 says no, that isn`t it, god, don`t be so dumb...
A small fisticuff breaks out between the two and 3 has to break it
up.
"Children, children stop fighting!!" she says. 1&2 stop, just as the
song finishes. 1 says " she`s got cancer" 2 says " sod off, he loves
someone else" 3 gets fed up of the bickering and puts the battle of who
could care less on.(significant,eh?)
so, at the end of that little story i would really like to know what
"Brick" is all about so that i can shut my 2 friends up. someone please
help me....
By the way I live in little old england and BF5 came to Norwich and I
missed them!!! i really regret not going and i cry myself to sleep
every night!!!!

settle the god damn arguement please..
                         BEC

The Associated Press sent out a short review of Lounge-A-Palooza today.
The reviewer (David Kligman) didn't mention BFF :( but had a couple
interesting comments, calling the Steve & Eydie rendering of Black Hole
Sun "just plain weird" and saying the PJ Harvey/Eric Feldman version of
Mel Torme's Zaz Turned Blue as being "sure to clear out any party long
before the olive jar is empty". He gave high marks, though, to Pizzicato
Five's The Girl from Ipanema.

Hey Lance-- What's Mrs. Folds, senior, like? I bet she's too cute. Tell
tell!!!

Random anecdote that's vaguely related to Ben Folds Five. I'm a voice
major in college and I'm assembling my senior recital. I thought I had an
accompanist lined up, but she backed out on me. Anyone know if Ben does
any accompanist work? It would be really interesting to hear Mozart arias
and Schubert lieder with some piano dives and cluster chords, huh? I'll
have to look into this. Hee hee.

Hi kiddies

If you love BFF you should check out Yazbek. They have one CD out, "The
Laughing Man" on W.A.R.?(What Are Records?) Records and the second disk,
"Tock" will be out in January. I saw them last night at Arlene Grocery In
NYC(a converted bodega which holds about 50 or 60 people) and the
keyboard-bass-drums trio KICKED ASS.

Over and out,

Subject: Vito's Bishop

Hey, Elvin Bishop is from Tulsa (my original hometown):-)! Fooled
around + fell in love!!! I guess the on-going debate concerns which BFF
album is better. That's like asking who makes the best chocolate ice
cream-it's all awesome. Still, the songs on ST are much cathier + more
meaningful, but maybe that's because I've listened to them for a longer
chunk of my life. The sound quality is superior on WAEA, however.
Ironical (:-)), considering they recorded it @ home! I bet that threw a
wrench in Sony's gears. They get a relatively huge budget, record @
home, + sound better than anything Sony does in their fancy-schmancy
studios (outside of their amazing classical series, of course).
Low-budget, high-quality-shows the superior talent + musicianship of BFF
(as if we needed more proof).

Hi, everyone -

I am a new subscriber to this armchair thing and I must say it is pretty
cool. I don't know which album I like better - I like them both for
different reasons. I think some of the live imports are my favorites.
Anyway, did anyone see BFF at the Hoarde Festival in Los Angeles?

Good eye, Sandi. That was, indeed, a Bon Jovi quote. What a great song. I
especially like the line that goes something like "you lost your
earring...but you lost more than that in my backseat, baby." I think BF5
would do a great cover of some Bon Jovi tunes. "Dead or Alive" and "You
Give Love a Bad Name" would be great.

As far as who was calling in "Steven's," I am convinced it was Steven
himself, calling to let them know that he's back.

Subject: Me, Tom and Mary, Jessee's setup, and KCRW

Hi all,

I forgot to introduce myself, as I am new the Armchair. Basically, my name
is Jordan, I'm from Atlanta, Ga., and I've been a BFF fan since February. Not
quite sure what got me into them, but ever since, I've been addicted. No
matter how many times I hear a BFF song, I never get sick of it. In other
words -- I love 'em to death, and I've never heard a better band.
Another thing: I picked up the Japanese import of the Self-titled release
(BFF) at Tower Records last night, and after listening to the bonus track
entitled "Tom and Mary," I wondered - then hit myself - as to why I hadn't
taped their Atlanta show. These guys don't JUST sound good live and on disc;
they sound good in a taped live show! That's an accomplishment, as most can
only grab one out of the three, much less any (sometimes). Anyway, "Tom and
Mary" is a kickin' song. If you can dig up some extra cash, the version on the
s/t release is definitely worth it. I can't get the song out of my head!!
Armchairers - question: Does anyone know the Cymbal and drum setup that
Darren Jessee uses? I've been after that sound for the past 3 weeks. Noone
seems to know, and I wrote to Modern Drummer to see if they could find out --
still waiting. If anyone has any idea what that awesome sound is, please email
me.
I got bored last night at around 3am and I went through each and every
real-audio recording of the band's KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic performances
and took out all their songs and put them on tape. The string quartets in it
sounded awesome!! Even if you don't have the equipment to get that stuff onto
tape, you should at least check it out! goto www.liveconcerts.com and listen
- -- definitely worth your time. The tapes even came out good. Is it illegal
though to distribute this tape in a non-profit manner? If anyone knows, please
email me.
                                     Thanks,
                                      Jordan R.
P.S. CDUniverse had alot of imports and hard-to-find singles, (good for
beginner collectors).

Would any Armchairites be interested in being part of a tape tree? I think
Ben and Co. put a great live show on, and I'd like to see some of it
disseminated. Trouble is, I don't have a really hi-q source tape. If anyone
is willing to help me out with one and enough people are interested in
participating I'd be more than happy to do all of the legwork. Drop me a
line, I'd love to get this going.

Subject: BFF Charlotte show

Because of my Fall Break, I got to see BFF at Tremont in Charlotte
instead of Raleigh. Venus Fly Trap Girls, who I couldn't quite get into,
opened. The show started about 45 minutes late, so the crowd was restless
and spent most of the time insulting them. Finally, Ben and co. came on
around 11 and they just rocked. The place was packed--I was way too close
to my neighbors--and with the exception of a fight, and some technical
difficulties at the beginning, the show was great. It was my first Ben
show, and now I can't wait to see them next month at the Cradle. For
those who said Ben wasn't that wild at the shows they saw--he seemed to be
in top form in Charlotte. Plenty of theatrics, and of course he had to
fall off of the piano. The show changed me from a BFF fan to a fanatic,
though!

Last night Brick was #3 on "Madison's Most Wanted," the top ten list of
most requested songs of the day on WMAD, which is the only local station
that plays BFF.

I find this interesting because I never thought that Brick carried much
commercial appeal. Does anybody know where it stands on the Billboard
charts? Just wondering.

Jason Kilts and all other fans at the Raleigh show:

That's the same thought my friends and I had when we saw the Venus Flytrap
Girls - that their drummer was the same guy from Shark Quest! Did you hear
me yell that question at him after their set? I was standing about 5 feet
away from the stage in front of Ben. Where where you?

The two BFF shows I have seen are that one at the Cat's Cradle and the one
the other night at the Ritz. I disagree with you guys about the show,
though. I had a great time, but our favorite trio just didn't seem like they
were into it. They always open with "Missing the War." Then they always play
something a little slower. Then we hear "Philosophy." The show in Chapel
Hill was much better and 25 minutes longer than the Ritz gig. Does anyone
else think the Five are getting into a rut? They seem to be playing very
similar set lists and shorter encores, etc. Just food for thought. By the
way, I just got some funky BFF covers of "All Shook Up" and "Champagne
Supernova." Anyone else heard 'em? They're pretty funny. Also, and I
apologize if this has been asked before, but who is Dr. Pyser (other than
the subject of a cool song)?

Talk to you guys later,

Jay
