Bart,
Your post was cool for the following reasons:
1) It didn't sling hateful words towards anyone.
2) It didn't talk about MOSHING. ;)
3) You didn't ask what Brick was about.
4) You understand how to post, which gives hope that when you decide
to unsubscribe some time in the distant future, you won't screw it up
and post unsubscribes over and over to the armchair. You serve as a
great role model for all members of the Armchair. A hearty welcome
aboard.

I bet this has been mentioned already, but who knows who's opening in
Lawrence? I believe that I'm going, I'll just have to figure out how,
seeing as its on a weekday. And it is at the Granada, correct? And if
somebody's putting together a armcharite meeting or something, please
fill me in.
And has anybody else noticed that when you're listening to SDUJ (for
those of you without a mental index: She Don't Use Jelly) in the car,
there is no possible way to keep the windows up? You just want the whole
world to hear it. You know its true... ~Dave the Great

Hi, all!
In response to Rebecca's question, Mrs. Folds was wearing a beige outfit
(quite dressy) and had blonde hair. She was actually walking around the
soundbooth quite a bit as if she were helping them or something. I also,
coincidentally, noticed an older man (maybe 60+) who was wearing nice
clothes. I wondered if it were Ben's dad, although there was no mention of
him. And I must say, Kate is just beautiful. Love that girl in overalls!
To Anthony, one of the first things I noticed when I listened to WAEA was
that odd intro beat on Kate. It's almost as if Darren misses the beat or
Ben misses the keys the second time. To me, it could be that Ben didn't
like the first chords and restarted the intro without re-recording. But
what the hell do I know? I'm no musician. Creative license, man!
Catch you on the flipside!

Subject: Atlanta show TIMES 2!
To all,
New to the armchair list. Although I've been a big BFF fan since the first
album, my first live performance was last Thursday in Atlanta AND I GOT TO
SEE THEM TWICE! I was lucky enough to win free tickets to the "Live X
performance" during that afternoon AND then catch the regular tour show in
the evening at the Roxy. Both shows were simply incredible! The "Live X"
show was a promotion for Atlanta radio station 99X and BFF played a small
set (40-45 minutes) in front of 150 or so people. (I was less than 10 feet
from Ben and his grand piano!!) 99X taped the show and will broadcast the
Live X performance in a few weeks. It usually is played Friday afternoons
at 1:00pm and repeated Sunday nights at 8:00pm. (I will post to the group
if anyone is interested when they plan to play BFF. I plan to roll tape...)
BFF's performances raised some questions/comments. Sorry if these
questions have been already covered on the mailing list, but here goes:
1. Both shows opened with a fantastic song that I've never heard before.
(The song isn't on either album.) An upbeat song with no real lyrics to
speak of. After the song, Ben mumbled the title of the song and said that
it was originally planned for the 1st album but didn't make the final cut!
(bummer!) Does anyone know what song it is? Or possibly where I could find
a copy? Ben also mentioned that it will be on the next album. (whenever
that is??) Reading from the other posts about other concerts, it sounds as
if BFF has the same set for the current tour. Perhaps someone could tell
what that song was!
2. Who is Sarah and why is she singing Ben's 1st lyric in Underground?
The same young girl was at both Atlanta performances and the band invited
here up on stage to sing Ben's intro to Underground ("I love to mix in
circles,....") Although she had a pretty damn good voice, she sounded (&
acted) like the incredible BFF "groupie." Who is this girl?
3. Why doesn't BFF play "Sports & wine" or "Uncle Walter"? They didn't
play either song at either performance. I was a little disappointed b/c
Sports is one of my favorites.... Furthermore, the band didn't seem that
they liked either song. At the Live X show, they came out and played the
1st few songs WITHOUT a play list. Then they started to warm up and chat
with crowd, taking song requests. Ben seemed to ignore my (constant)
request for either "Sports" or "Uncle Walter." I know he could hear me b/c
I was less than 10 feet from him.. Did I miss something or do they hold
some sort of grudge about those two songs from the 1st album???
I guess that's all for now. Sorry to ramble on for so long. BFF was so
great live and in person that I'm driving to Birmingham this Sat. (Oct.
25th) for another performance. I don't have tix right now. Anyone
planning to attend can drop me a line w/ some suggestions!!! Maybe we can
meet for an adult beverage before or after the show!

Subject: Brick and Tape Tree
Hi --
This is my first post to the list as well (there seem to be a bunch tonight).
I got into BFF this summer when a DJ in Chicago played a little ten-second
snippet of BOWCCL and said they were a great band. That snippet got me
hooked. I'm going to the Boston show 11/4--can't wait!
About Brick:
Why do I get the feeling that the meaning of this song has probably been
discussed ad nauseum?
But to add my two cents, I've always thought the song was about the guy's
girlfriend having an abortion and how they both realize they're alone and
not really in love with one another. A lot of the lyrics point to this, and if
you want, I can do a line-by-line analysis for you.
And about the tape tree--I'd certainly be interested in participating, but
I have no BFF live recordings, much less high quality source ones!

Hi All! I'm an idiot! There was some info in issue 550 that I really
wanted, and, I, in my supreme retardedity, deleted the issue... If you have
a copy, please send it to me! Thanks!
Also, I went home from Cleveland to Kansas City this weekend, and I had a
really weird BF5 dream... (I've actually had quite a few before, but this
is the first I've posted...) I'm in this choir at Case Western Reserve.
(This is fact.) In my dream, the director of the choir is Robert. Why?
Dunnask me. The thing is, I don't recognize him at all. But I keep
wearing my "cool in school" t-shirt to rehearsal (I wear it a lot) and I
for some reason wonder if the director is a fan, mainly because of the
style of music he picks or whatever. So finally he goes up to the piano
and starts plinking a few notes from Philosophy and suddenly I yell "Shit!
You're Robert!" Then I woke up. OK, that was a dumb one. I promise the
others were better, but I don't remember them....

hey i was wondering...
why all the need for an explanation of "brick", when it's supposed to be
self-explanatory? hey, not saying i understand all the logistics of it
- - I just gathered that there was some girl, some guy, and that they're
going through a rough patch of some sort. does it matter? I mean, I
love Tori Amos, but i'm not tearing my hair over not understanding what
she's going on about. Although if anyone does find out, i'd like to
know :)

Okay, I am officially jealous!
If there is any Cleveland person who is NOT going to BF5, you shouldbe
shot. Here I am in the middle of the cornfields instead of at home at
Cleveland, and BF5 and TMBG are playing in the same month! AHH!!
Seriously, I want to know how it goes, and if any of you people actually
talk to them, tell them that we are waiting for them at Purdue
University. I'm serious, they'd be great here. Enjoy the shows!!

Hey, I noticed John Maynard's posting about the distinct Stevie Wonder
influence in BF5's music. This is something that Ben has admitted to in
an interview within the pages of The Performing Songwriter magazine
(July/August '97). Here's the brief transcript of pertinent info:
PS: Tell me a few albums or songs that are required listening for you.
BF: Let's see... Randy Newman's *Sail Away*. Especially if the song
"Marie" were on it. That song needs to be on that album, and not
*Rednecks*. Liz Phair's *Exile in Guyville*. PreFab Sprout. Elvis
Costello's song "I Want You". Elton John's early hits, such as "Goodbye
Yellow Brick Road", "Sorry Seems To Be the Hardest Word", and "Levon".
Stevie Wonder's *Inner Visions* and half of *Songs in the Key of Life*.
And Nirvana's *Nevermind*.
If you'd like a copy of the whole interview, I'm afraid I am going to be a
"pyser" and refuse to write the whole thing out on email and send it to
tons of people--so don't ask me for one. But if you pick up the latest
issue of Performing Songwriter, you can order back issues. I just thought
y'all would like to know what Ben puts in HIS CD changer...

Max,
I'm as equally flustered as you. It seems that they don't give a shit about
anybody in the "little old" Northwest. I'm from Portland and I'm tempted to
drive down to San Francisco, even if it is during Thanksgiving weekend. It
would be a really long drive, but I think it'd be worth it. I guess it would
be great if they did have a show in either Seattle or Portland after Xmas
(I'd like it to be Portland, but it would probably be Seattle). But it
probably won't happen.
It seems that you and me are the only ones complaining about them not coming
to the Northwest. Are we the only ones up here? If there's anyone else, I'd
be interested to hear from you...
I guess that's everything,
