To everyone going to the show at Cat's Cradle on the 11th:
In the same strip as the Cradle there is a pizza place called Amante's, so
if anyone is interesting in meeting up before the show, then let's say
we'll be at Amante's at 8:30.
Maybe I'll be a big dork and wear a nametag or something, so people know
how to find me.

As far as the guy who posted the Evaporated chords, I have been playing
it with a few different chords. I don't wanna take up a lot of space on
the Armchair about it, because I really hate when people do that, but
basically the verse (I've thought) goes:
F Am Bb... E
and the chorus goes Dm Am C (Bb) F Bb
and the bridge: Bb C Am F three times
Bb C Dm Am Bb... Ab
Anyway... on to stuff that matters at all in some way...
Even though Naked Baby Photos is going to have maybe two songs that you
can't get on the boots that I've seen (dick holster and the 7" jackson
cannery), I'm sure the quality of the CD will be far better than any
that you could get trading. I've compared my tapes to the b-sides of
singles (recorded from the same show) and I can't believe how much
better they do. My copy of Eddie Walker is from a copy of a copy of a
copy of ...later that day... of a really worn out demo. Theirs is a
studio DAT tape. Cool. And if I had to pick between getting new stuff on
a rarities album or saving it for the next commercially done one, I'd
wait, because, hell, more singles with b-sides that way! ;) 67 days...

Subject: Review and Setlist of 11/6/97 NYC
Well, I made it through the show Thursday night at the Supper Club in
New York City. It was my first Ben Folds show, and as a huge fan I was not
let down in the least! I'll skip the details of waiting in line outside for
over an hour as well as reviewing the opening acts, Travis and Verbow.
After seeing Ben, Rob, and Darren, I kind of forgot about what the other
bands were about.
Ben Folds Five came out to a sold-out crowd and kicked it hard right
off, with a five-minute instrumental intro. They sounded incredibly tight,
despite Ben's mention of being nervous to play in New York. However, he did
add that he felt more comfortable than ever in the city, and the band sure
looked it. Darren mentioned that they were staying at the hotel next door,
and Robert added that they sure "weren't staying on the sixth floor." The
Edison Hotel was right there, I'm wondering if anyone bothered to check it
out?
The set list was similar to others I've seen posted; most notably the
Boston show. It did seem a bit shorter though. It went like this, in
order: Intro, Battle of Who Could Care Less, Philosophy, Selfless Cold and
Composed, The Last Polka, Steven's Last Night in Town, Fair, Brick, Kate,
Jackson Cannery, One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces, Smoke, Julianne,
Underground. The encore was the cover of She Don't Use Jelly and a
rocked-out Song for the Dumped.
I was totally surprised at how solid the guys performed live. I guess
that's a nod to their live-style recordings on the studio albums. If anyone
didn't know already, all those harmonies aren't overdubs, they're Darren and
Robert adding vocals to the mix. Darren sang the intro to "Underground" as
well as the first verse in "She Don't Use Jelly," and Robert added the
second verse to the Flaming Lips cover. Darren and Robert really could be
lead singers if necessary; they're that good.
The live set was a perfect balance of near-perfect (well, perfect
actually) songs coupled with alternate versions of the CD tracks. They
added different introductions to "Julianne," "Fair," and "Song for the
Dumped." It was awesome to see Ben playing the wind piano (what is it
exactly?) up close on "Steven's Last Night in Town" and while sitting on
"Smoke." Ben's spoken intro to "One Angry Dwarf..." was great: he mentioned
how people ask if the song is autobiographical. He said (with much humor)
that the song was for the other point of view, that they felt sorry for all
the people they beat up. As Ben himself said, "Do we look like the kind of
people who got beat up in school?"
I was a little disappointed that I couldn't see Ben's hands on the
Steinway from my vantage point (dead-center, about 4 feet from the stage),
but I got to see all of the guys up close as Ben sang "Steven's..." from the
floor mic as did Darren for "Underground." Robert was great on the string
bass for "Brick" and really played all those killer lines right on. I was
really impressed.
Although I would have liked to hear "Where's Summer B." and "Alice
Childress," the guys really did put on one of the best shows I've ever seen.
I also snapped twenty-some photos, so I hope they come out well. I've got a
pic of Ben with his shirt off for all the girls and lots of great close-ups.
When I get the film developed I'll post them on my web page:

Hi All,
I went to the show last night. It was awesome. THey are getting better &
better every time I see them. I can't really give a great review because I
was not concentrating. I really enjoyed A Song for the Dumped, Julianne,
Steven's, Selfless & She dont use Jelly. Ben's stage presence was great.
They are so much fun. He was so funny when he was standing on top of the
Piano. They have come a long way from when I saw them in a small club in
Hoboken, NJ. I still love them the same. Did anyone from the list go?
Anyway, just wanted to share.

Nice show, high energy to start. Philosophy was huge, but
Selfless was a bit disjointed and brought things down a bit.
The Fair, Brick, Kate run was a highlight for me.
Sound in the venue was outstanding, head and shoulders
above the Irving Plaza show in the Spring.
The show was a bit short, 1 hour, 22 minutes.
And the amount of talking during the music continues
to be problem. I was in the center of the floor, fairly close
to the stage, and there were two women behind me who
talked (yelling above the music at times) throughout the
entire show. Very very distracting.
I taped the show onto DAT, and would love to swap for
other shows on this tour.

wow, it was amazing! my second time seeing the boys and boy did they
rock. i'm sure someone will post a set list. i threw them a rubber
duckie before they came back for their encore and robert picked it up
when they came back. ben took off his shirt!! I was so happy they

Sacrifice", it was a great show.
After "Polka", Ben said that it was the "sister song to 'Selfless'...no,
wait a minute...I wrote that first, so it's actually like an older brother
song. I'll get it straight next time". After "Fair", he called it a "kind
of like your dickhead stepfather who won't let you watch TV" song.
Before "Dwarf", Ben said, "People are always asking me if this is an
autobiographical song. Do we look like the kind of guys who got beat up in
school?(Robert added,"My lawyer can take your lawyer!")No, we wrote this
song as an opposite point of view and dedicated it to the guys whose asses
we kicked!"
No piano diving, but plenty of standing. At the end, Ben took off his shirt
and donned the customary tossed black t-shirt and did his best Axl Rose
wail before the show closed.

Dear Fivers,
Well, I hadn't read my mail for a week and when I had 300 digests to read, I
felt bad because I couldn't respond in time to say stuff.
Someone wrote that the Bhadavad Gita was a Buddhist text, and then someone
(more than one actually) corrected him. About 3 weeks ago, I made a post and
and explained what the Bhadavad Gita is. I can't win. I scream and people
don't even hear me. That's a fucking shame.
Wouldn't it be cute that in the cover it had naked baby pictures of the guys?
O I hope so. HOW CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would personally be
mortified though.
