Subject: "Brick" video on Are-Oh-Vee
Well, being the loser who doesn't have cable television, I was finally able
to watch the "Brick" video on a local music video show here in the Los
Angeles area called Are-Oh-Vee. Quite somber (duh!). It was directed so
that the interepretation of the song is still up in the air, though I think
everyone agrees it's about abortion.
I think that's all I can think of... hmmm... waiting patiently for the 30th.
Still debating whether I should attend the BFF show on the 29th...
Oh yes, and concerning "Naked Baby Pictures," I heard there will also be a
follow-up photo album to coincide with the release on the BFF rarities CD.
Anyone else hear this?

Hey-
My ride for the show on the 30th in LA just bailed on me, so I
desperately need a ride. I can arrange to be in Pasadena or my school
in Santa Clarita, and I'd gladly help out with gas money or whatever.
Thanks,
Chris

Hey guys,
I just picked up the most recent issue of Guitar Player magazine. It's
the collector's edition.
Anyways, I open it to page 92 and what do I see? Ben Folds kissing some
dude! The caption underneath the picture says:
"Depression-rock headliner Ben Folds is seen here at a recent Los
Angeles concert kissing an unidentified male. The man was seen just
off-stage for the concert and walked out after the closing set, sources
at the concert say."
There's no way Ben is gay! Where do you think they got this picture?

Hi everyone...
This is a bit off subject so maybe any replys should be directed to myself rather than the list. Anyway, I'm also on the Jonathan Richman mailing list and it was recently suggested that maybe a lot of Ben Folds Five fans would also be fans of Jonathan. So hoping this may be true - i thought i'd pose the question here. Any off you out there?

Hey all, this is my first time posting on the Magical Armchair, so make me
feel welcome. Anyway, the other nite I was babysitting for some kids, and we
were watching the show All That on Nickelodeon. I had nothing better to do,
so I watched along with the kids. The show was doing a sketch that took place
in something like a basement (it was a rock music sketch). What do I see in
the background, but a Ben Folds Five promo poster! It was small, and on the
top it had the cover of WAEA. On the bottom it had the Ben Folds Five logo
and the piano drawing that's on the CD of the debut album. It was pretty cool
seeing Ben Folds Five on Nickelodeon. More than we see them on MTV, right?
Love, peace, looks, brains, and everything,

Subject: Where is my friend Jory?
Hey what's up BFF fans? Well i got a card in the mail like two days
after they played on Sessions. That sucks, because I caught the tail
end of the show with that old poseur Beck. I was really mad though
because according to my trusty Dallas Morning News, they were
supposed to play on the premier show, well guess what?, they
DIDN'T!!!! I watched for the first couple of months, spending my
Saturday nights hording in front of the television. Anyhow, back to
the original message: I drove to Houston(my hometown) and met a guy
named Jory from the Armchair. Ben and Co. put on a great show. It was
well worth the four and a half hour drive. I saw them two days later
at Edgefest where people in the audience booed and I heard people say
things like "I hate this band" and "Go home!!" I was so pissed, but I
wore my I was never cool in school shirt and "f-off" to those
freaks. I think Ben has more talent in his little pinky than Moby
could ever hope for with his tired techno bullshit!!
Anyhow, Ben got them back by doing this "heavy metal" song I think
was called"sacrificed" or something of that nature. He souded like
one of those glam-bands from the 80's. I think that the irony was
left on the crowd because they(the crowd)started to mosh and stuff. I
thought to myself that Ben and Darren and Robert knew exactly what
they were doing. They made these kids make themselves look bad. I had
to give them credit where credit is due. Applaud them if you see
them!!
I will see the band this Friday at the Starck club here in Dallas,
and I will let ya'll kmow how it was. Ben gave me his autograph in
Houston and so did robert and Darren. They are really down-to-earth
and quite humble about their success. Ben and I discussed piano
teqniques and adjusting the pedals reaction. Not that interesting,
but it was Ben, that was enough for me. Well this has been my two
cents worth. If anyone sees Jory, tell jim to e-mail me, he goes to
school in Austin!!
Later,
Eric

Subject: Karaoke simulation howto
If your stereo doesn't have a karaoke button, what
you have to do is reverse the leads on one of your
speakers, assuming that they're the kind that you
have to strip the insulation off the leads and insert
them into the terminals on the speakers. If you have
speaker cables that have nice, clean plugs that go
into your speakers, then you have to cut and splice
them...maybe not such a great idea for a novelty like
this.
Anyway, now that the leads are switched, your speakers
are out of phase, and anything that is in the center
of the original mix (usually lead vocals) gets
cancelled out, leaving stuff that is panned to the
left or right during the mixing of the album.
This karaoke simulation is commonly referred to as
"oopsing". Many Beatles bootleg studio tracks were
the product of "oopsing" since the Beatles hid a lot
of things in their mixes, so bootleggers brought these
subtle differences out and sold their new product as
"Alternate mixes" and the like. The best example that
comes to mind is "Because" off of Abbey Road. If you
put your speakers out of phase, all you hear are the
rich harmony vocals, with no music (it's very faint).
For the Anthology III release, the producers went
back and made a real alternate mix with just the
vocals, but before then, bootleggers had done the
same thing.
Have Fun!
