Subject: Ben Folds Five interview in MERCURY
>This is a reproduction of an interview with Ben Folds of BEN FOLDS FIVE as
appeared in the first issur of MERCURY (Hg) magazine, an independent
magazine in the Cleveland Area. I don't care if it's "Copyrighted", the kid
who wrote it is a jerk :P Enjoy!
>1-25-96, Odeon, Cleveland OH
>Hg: So tell me how the band got started.
>BF: We got together about 2 years ago. It really just ki\nd of started
pretty easily. We met each other and just started playing. It's real
boring, there was no story to it, we just started playing. And a month
after we started playing, we played out first gig. Abbout six months later
we had a deal with Caroline Records, and we started recording. And a month
after that, one thing led to another, and the record's out.
>Hg: How do you like Caroline?
>BF: They've been really good to us.
>Hg: Did you go to them or did they approach you?
>BF: Actually, they approached us. We didn't make a demo tape at all, we
didn't have time to. We had only been playing for a few months. We played
up in New York, and they came to see us. Friends of friends knew them, and
heard of us, and they came out and watched.
>Hg: Did you guys get accepted right away, or did it take a while for the
crowds to get used to you?
>BF: I think we were pretty easily accepted. Honestly, there's nothing
about it really offensive.
>Hg: You guys seem to have a lot of fun on stage.
>BF: Yeah we do, we love playing, that's why we're doing it.
>Hg: What's the drummer's name?
>BF: Darren.
>Hg: He's nuts!
>BF: Yeah, he's fucked up!
>Hg: Do you have any good stories from the road?
>BF: I'm trying to think if there are any Darren sories.
>COOL ROADIE: DEAD SQUIRREL!
>BF: We seem to have without wantin to, all become animal killers. Well,
we killed a bear, and it was terrible. It ran out in front of the truck.
It was a 250-300lb black bear. And then a hawk flew out in front of the
truck. I mean, I didn't want to kill a hawk. It sucks. He (Robert) was
driving when we killed the hawk, I was driving for the bear, so we're head
to head right now.
>ROADIE: Isn't a bear worth more than a hawk on the roadkill scale?
>BF: Well it weighs more but a hawk is tough.
>Hg: a hawk's luck.
>BF: hard to kill, too. Let's see, good stories. Y'know, stuff that's
funny to us, isn't funny to anyone else.
>Hg: Like what?
>BF: Well, leaving a club in Vancouver screaming, "PENIS A!" out the
window. PENIS A!!
>Hg: How long are you going on the tour?
>BF: This one ends the 20th (Feb.) in San Francisco, then we do Japan, and
then we go and do Hawaii, and then we're going back across the US so we'll
be coming back to town.
>Hg: What kind of following are you getting?
>BF: The CD seems to be doing pretty well. We're showing up to an
occasional sold-out venue and packed places, it's pretty cool. And they
all seem to have the CD, and it's people from like 16-17 all the way up to 55.
>ROADIE: Jesus Lizard fans seem to like them a lot.
>Hg: How big do you guys want to get?
>BF: We've been thinking about that a lot lately. We hadn't thought about
it at all until the last couple of weeks. I think in New York, after
getting mobbed a couple of times, I was like "Shit, what are we doing?"
Like, exactly what are we shooting for? I think I still don't know really.
I think I'm happy with this. This is fun. I've been told by people who
are on the other side of it, that this is the time we'll enjoy the most,
and if we go into a higher thing, playing bigger places, then it gets to be
a drag sometimes. But i'm pretty happy with this, I'm having fun.
>Hg: Do you write most of the stuff or is it a collaboration.
>BF: Most of it I write. There's some collaboration. we're trying to
collaborate a little more, but I'm such a structure freak when I write,
that I have a hard time collaborating with other people. I don't take
suggestions very well. The only people I would take one from are these guys.
>Hg: Is there a big local following for you back in Chapel Hill?
>BF: It's getting there, it's pretty cool
>Hg: Is there a pretty good scene out there?
>BF: Chapel Hill's the best. You're gonna hear a lot of Chapel Hill
coming up.
>Hg: Isn't Capsize 7 from there?
>BF: Capsize 7's from there, Archers of Loaf, Southern Culture on the
Skids, Superchunk, Squirrel Nut Zippers. All of these bands probably live
within 5 blocks of our house. It's a good scene.
>ROADIE: There's so many national touring acts.
>BF: Connels, Dish, June. Have you heard of June yet?
>Hg: No.
>BF: You will.
>Hg: How were the early gigs out there?
>BF: Good.
>Hg: You've been playing piano since you were 2 i bet.
>BF: 9
>Hg: Were you forced to or did you want to?
>BF: I wanted to, I couldn't wait.
>Hg: I saw you on Conan, how was that?
>BF: It was fun, I love a good adreneline rush. That's basically what
that was.
>Hg: Have you met any huge piano players through your success?
>BF: No the closest I came to meeting those people was in Rhode Island.
Little Richard was playing the club next door, and his flyer was up with a
picture of him, and our flyer was up with a picture of me. I looked at
that and thoughtthat was pretty cool, I wish I had a camera. But I haven't
met any of those people. I mean, I'd shit bricks to meet Elton John. I
guess I would to meet Little Richard too. Little Richard and Elton John
were my favorites when I was growing up.
>Hg: A feature in this issue is "What's Wrong with music today"...
>BF: And we're on the cover.
>Hg:...What do you think it is?
>BF: There's always bullshit going on, there has been forever. It's like
you don't remember the bullshit later because it weeds itself out. And
right now there's a lot of creative shit going on and I wouldn't want to
get caught up in all the cra, because there's too much in every time
period, and I think right now is a fantasticly exciting time. A lot of my
favorite shit is starting to take off right now.
>Hg: What kind of stuff are you in to?
>BF: Liz Phair, Counting Crows, PJ Harvey I love. Built to Spill's grea.
>Hg: Oh, Built to Spill's my favorite band.
>BF: we wore that record out in the truck, I would love to meet that guy.
>Hg: What's your favorite song?
>BF: I like "Twin Falls", I like to play it out on the piano, and "I wanna
see movies of my dreams" What's that one?
>ROADIE: "Car"
>
>There you have it. For talked for a little more about record labels, and
stuff about sellouts and if that is a fair thing to call someone, but I
thought this was a cool place to stop.

Hello,
I'm posting this again because one of those repeat posts got in the way
of my last post.
Anyone going to any of the SoCal shows? Particularly Redondo Beach? If
we couldn't organize a gettogether it'd be nice to kinda identify
ourselves at shows and stuff.
I also need a kind soul to walk in with for the Redondo show. I'm 17
and 3/4 (doesn't that suck?) and I guess I want to play it safe. Not
that I'm using anyone, I'd still love to meet up with you guys even if I
was 51. But yeah, help.
Can't wait to see your lovely armchair faces :)

Hey gang....
I was checking out the video to "one angry dwarf..". My friend and I
noticed a cool phenomena in it. If you look very closely the dog being walked
by one of the females has a very distinctive characteristic. Its left hear
hangs slightly lower than its right, clearly showing that the lil' pup is
indeed gay. Hey, not that I have anything against gay animals (After all
Ben's gay, right??), I just thought it was pretty cool. Anyway, the "one
angry dwarf.." video really kicks ass, unlike there more recent release of
"Whatever, and ever". Seriously, I don't understand why they put together
such a piss-poor video for such a great song. Really cutting edge -- "I know
lets shot cameos of the band on a black backdrop". At least they had enough
sense to hire another director for brick, which returns the band to its high
standards of fine video producing.

Just went to www.bffweb.com and found out a bit more about this online
concert the boys are doing.
They will be online at their official website (follow the links when you
get there) on Sunday November 30 at 11pm (EST), as they're broadcasting
from Los Angeles.
I am assuming this is US information; does anyone have a clue when it
will be for Australian states? I wouldn't have a clue what the time
difference is.
Cheers,
