I wish I could have stayed up till 3 or so in the morning watching Ben and
the boys play in a window the size of a postage stamp. Alas, my ethics
class is difficult on 3 hours of sleep. Did anyone "record" this into a
real media file available for download? I gotta believe it's too big to be
sent via e-mail, but if its publically available on FTP it would be cool to
download it.

Let me know-- list or private e-mail, whatever's most appropriate based on
how many people ask for this.

Now, I don't know how many of our fellow Helmet Heads out there
are musically adept outside of the genius of the Boys, but the great B.B.
King recently put out a new album of duets with other famous artists. (By
far the two best cuts are his groupings with Eric Clapton and D'Angelo)
Anyway, I was upset that Ben and the Boys weren't invited on to the disk.
I know their whole big thing is that they don't use guitars, and Lucille
is the Queen High Goddess of them, but it still would have been kick ass.
Just imagine Ben and the Blues Boy King getting together to sing "Stormy
Monday" or something. The thought is boggling. Anyway, that's just a
thought I'll leave out there for the true music lovers. If you don't know
what the hell I'm talking about, go find yourself a B.B. King album and
listen. If you can't hear how he has influenced music from his time to the
present, kindly shoot yourself in the head and spare me the bother. ;)
Anyway, that's my thoughts. Laters!

ERIC

P.S. I'm offering 20 bonus cool points to the first person who can tell me
how Lucille got her name.

Ahhh......what a kickass night it's been! The El Rey show rocked the
casbah! It was great to meet all the armchair folk too! I'm so jealous
that Janet got ben's stool cushion. But I did snag Darren's set list
from the super-nice roadie wearing a Blink 182 shirt. even though the
bouncers tried to thwart me...It' now hanging up on my wall.
the girl standing next to janet (sorry, i forgot your name) was taking

I kept screaming for Emaline and I'm so happy that they played it (it
wasn't on the set list)! I'm marginally bummed that they didn't play
Sexy M.F. but robert did his disco diva thing, and that was cool.

Subject: Ben Folds at the Beach

Hi hi,

I caught Ben Folds Five the other night (11/29/97) in Redondo Beach, CA at a
charming club called The Club Caprise. I got there kind of late (came from
work, 12 hour shift) and saw the "free" valet parking. More on that later.

For those who are curious, The Club Caprise is a bar/restaurant with all
kinds of seating and a small stage/standing room at the end of the club. I
took my place in the second row. As I came in Old Pike was in the middle of
their opening set. I noticed they all dressed like Robert Sledge, which I
thought was amusing. Anyway, their set was pretty generic, something out of
Matchbox 20. Next came Travis. "We're from Scotland!" There were these
three girls at the front with me that kept yelling "We love you!" which
prompted Mr. Travis lead-singer to spout "Why?" They replied, "Because we
do!" Geesh.

After a long set up time and endless gangsta rap, Ben and the gang came out
at about 10:50. And here's the annotated set list:

Missing the War
Battle of Who Could Careless
- -At this point Robert asked Ben if he knew any geographical facts about
- -Redondo Beach. Ben replies "I know Loverboy is playing here next week."
Philosophy =)
Selfless, Cold, and Composed - from the "newer" album Ben says
Doctor Pyssser
- -Robert does banter. He talks about having a sandwich at the beach. All
these seagulls were around him. He gave them a part of his sandwich and a
whole flock of seagulls started following him! Some annoying people were
shouting for the "breakup song" but Robert said "we need a breather as we
played alot of notes just now. I went to the tamborine institute of
technology." Some dumb guy asked about an old song about a girl. "Your old
song! About a girl!" "We have quite a few of those," Ben replied.
Last Polka - woohoo!
- -More banter from Robert - "I saw Dweezil Zappa and ABBA in Germany." no
idea why he says this.
Steven's Last Night in Town - with Ben on the blowing keyboard thing
Fair - Ben announces "Mr. Robert Yule Sledge" on the bass guitar of course
- -Ben says he's proud of his bandmates, the "m******s"
Brick!
Kate - didn't see her but a good song nonetheless
Jackson Cannery!!
Emmaline!!!
One Angry Dwarf
Julianne - with soft opening
- -Ben says, "I know El Rey. The m*******."
Smoke
- -someone shouts "don't forget my black t-shirt!" Ben replies "What? t-shirt
night?"
Underground! - Ben plays the first notes to Old Time Rock n' Roll to begin
- -Encore-
- -Ben-"I'd like to thank Old Pike for putting some pornographic materal on my
piano tonight."
She Don't Use Jelly
Song for the Dumped - the crowd pleaser
At this point Ben jumps on the piano and does his crazy metal improv. He
then jumps up to the rafters and climbs a bit. Fun to watch!

Right after they leave I tried to get the setlist, but some dam Japanese girl
beats me to it. After the 90 minute show the speakers blare out the Rockford
Files theme. I left right away to find the majority of the crowd in line to
pick up their car from the "free" valet parking. It took half an hour to get
my car back! Oh well, if they play there again I'll be sure to park at the
Lucky's across the street.

If anyone's interested in trading, I got a nice tape of the show with my Sony
stereocorder. Take a look at my list first before offering a trade. It's

Subject: ever wish?

Did you ever wish you could give something back? I just saw BF5 in LA
last night, and once again they kicked ass. I've seen them in concert
three times so far, and they just keep getting better and better. And for
all the energy and excitement and thoughtfulness and spontanaity that they
bring to each and every show, I just wish there was something I could give
back to them to let them know how truly amazing I think they are... I
mean, I applaud my heart out, but it just doesn't seem to equal all the
memories and experiences they've given me... know what I mean?

Anyway, yeah, the show last night rocked, and whether you're from
Columbus, Rochester, Portland, Riverside, or San Bernadino, you probably
had a hell of a time. If anyone taped the show, please email me 'cause I
would love a copy of it. Also, a special request: the first BF5 show I
ever saw was in Cincinnati at Bogart's on June 2, 1997. If anyone has a
set-list from that show, please email me with it. I don't remember all
the songs, but we were fortunate enough at that concert to hear both Uncle
Walter and Sports and Wine, and a complete set-list would be great.

Subject: Ben at the El Rey, baby!

Hello again,

I saw Ben Folds Five last night at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles. The
coolest club east of the 405 says one emcee. I got there early this time,
only to find a much larger crowd waiting in line. Oh well. We thought the
El Rey had a coat check, but it was secretly converted to a merch table. But
they had free BF5 stickers so you can't complain.

The crowd was packed but fortunately Ben was more than enough of a
distraction. A number of celebrity type people were there: Bob Saget, Dave
Couliet, Michael McKean, Michael Penn, Tavis from Reel Big Fish, and Kara's
Flowers. A full house/laverne and shirley reunion of sorts. I was about 8
rows back on Ben's side this time. Old Pike was it's old generic self. Not
much to say about them. Travis on the other hand did a pretty good show this
time. Travis' lead singer's mommy was there and he cried 'cause she let him
do what he wanted to do. Which seems to be sweating alot on the El Rey
stage. At the end of their set he threw out his very sweat-soaked t-shirt.
Smells like Scotland methinks. This was the last Old Pike/Travis/BF5 tour
date by the way.

On to Ben and the annotated setlist:

Dr. Pyser - I was surprised they opened with this one, although I now know
they did it at the Fillmore
Battle of Who Could Careless
- -Ben says, "First time we played L.A. proper in a whole long time." - Two
years as a matter of fact, and their first headlining gig in the city of
angels.
Philosophy
Selfless, Cold, and Composed
Missing the War
The Last Polka!
Steven's Last Night in Town - Ben playing that horn keyboard thing again
- -Ben introduces Joe and Tray, his favorite roadie guys
Fair - featuring Mr. Robert Sledge on the bass guitar
- -Ben quotes from Star Wars - "Am I a figment of your imagination, or am I a
figment of yours?" But he ends up sounds like Beavis and Butthead..
Brick
Kate - with Mr. Darren Jessee on the drum set - nope, I didn't get to see
Kate =(
Jackson Cannery!
Emmaline
One Angry Dwarf - Ben explains this song. "Alot of people want to know if we
got our asses kicked in school. I wrote this song from the point of view of
the people I felt sorry for, all the m******'s asses I kicked in school."
Julianne - "Did Axl show up tonight?" Ben muses. "Snoop is here?"
Smoke
Underground - At this point Darren goes up for his usual opening line, and we
noticed that the man is drenched with sweat. I was tempted to run and
hydrate the guy before he passes out. Then Robert does a crazy disco improv
with his line! - "I always wanted to be a disco diva!"
- -Encore-
Boxing! - Robert sits on the side and smokes a cig until his part comes on
She Don't Use Jelly
Song for the Dumped

That dam Japanese girl beat me to the setlist. Again! She even got Ben's
stool. (piano seat that is) The set was a bit longer than Redondo, thanks to
Boxing. It was a great show, despite the continuous hiss from the speakers.
Ben says they'll be back in February. Hopefully they'll do another club
show.

I'll be back at the El Rey next Monday for Barenaked Ladies. (woohoo!) so
say hi to me.

I'm assuming this is Vancouver, British Columbia, in Canada. Which means
that what they were probably saying (and which the author of the interview
would have caught had he bothered to check his spelling with Ben), was
"PENIS, EH?"

At least I think the story is much funnier that way. :)

Hello! I'm new to the list as I am rapidly becoming a huge BFF fan. I've
seen them twice now, San Antonio earlier this year and Austin last week.

I also publish Beyond Belief, an Elvis Costello fanzine. I am aware that
the band performed Elvis's "Wave a White Flag" earlier this year which I
gave mention in our last issue.

I was wondering - have they played it more than once? Do they have plans to
record it? Does anyone have a tape of it?

Thanks - and looking forward to being part of this list!
