Hello all,
This post is directed solely to fellow New Englanders, especially those
of us in CT. So, I give the others my permission to skip my boring lecture.
I have two points:
1. My band is playing on the 9th in Glastonbury, CT (just outside of
Hartford)
We are playing at a teen run, alcohol-free Coffeehouse. The shows starts at
8. Two bands are playing. We are second. We are very BF5 esque, and might
actually cover some tunes. Actually, we will definately play some of that
quality. We are allowed to bring in friends from out of town (but not many),
so if you are interested in driving to support a rocking band, e-mail me at
qualitease@aol.com
I recommend to high-school or college age kids, not the elders. Just because
a high school event. Comprendes?
2. I got a 93 score on my All-New England vocal audition! I am a tenor, so
will be at the festival on March 19-21. If anyone else on this list got in, I
would love to chat. See ya.

So I have little to nothing to offer y'all... I have MTV Live on tape.
that's all.
I was wondering if there are any generous souls out there who would like
to send me tapes of shows (audio)...especially the most recent one from
philly. Any recent shows will do though. I'm not picky, i just want
adecent quality tape... i'll send you the money for the costs.
Thanks so much,

it's very strange and unusual for a band to come close to a show and not
anounce when tickets will go on sale! It's also making me nervous, having to
wait for a sign and run to the ticketmaster location! if it is an MTV thing,
it'll be sold out pretty fast with little idiots who want to be on tv...
that'll suck! anyway, if anyone has any info, please email me and let me
know, thanks a lot!

Hey folks. Well, i couldn't fall asleep last night, so i picked up the bass
and figured out the first line from BFF's version of She Don't Use Jelly. I
havn't really put any more efforts into it since then, so i havn't gotten the
changes, but i'm hoping possibly someone else can come up with them for me
because it's not all that easy to hear. But anyway, here's to start all you
bass players off..
A---3---3---3----3---|------5-5--------------
E-----3---3----3----- |---3------3-6-5-3----
And.. repeat! A lot of times! I know the chorus starts in the key of G, but
that's about all i can tell ya now! If anyone makes any progress in it, please
drop me a line!

Subject: Reviewers...
I just had to share a gripe here...somebody had mentioned
BFF being at the Blockbuster listening stations or something,
and WAEA being listed as their debut album...it seems like an
awful lot of people have that assumption, and decide to put
it in print for everyone to see. This especially pisses me off
when I see this error made in a good review...it's like, I'll be
reading along, being "Yeah, yeah, this person knows what
he's talking about, he's not just trashing BFF for being popular
like too many "cool" publications are getting around to doing now,
he's actually listened to the music and knows what he's talking
about..." and then the review will hail WAEA as a terrific debut
album and there goes that entire "knows what he's talking about"
thing. I mean, it's not as if the first album was completely unknown,
it's never been hard to find, and it's certainly been on
Blockbuster's
shelves for ages...anyways, it just kinda sucks for the band and for
the new fans, who might not know for a while that another album
does exist that, in all honesty, kicks WAEA's ass...
Live good.

Hmmm...they covered a BFF song, huh? That's interesting. Do you remember their
name at all? Well,I'm glad that you brought in the New Year with that crazy
trio we've all come to know and love....well....kinda :-) . I don't know how
to feel about them doing BFF songs,though-at least they're doing the songs
well . Nice to meet you.

On the Japanese import copy of the self-titled, the lyrics sheets for
some of the songs are slightly different (even though they are sung the
same as on the normal cd). In 'Julianne' just after the line "how could
she miss a man who drags a bag of trash down the road?" there follows
the mysterious extra line "Don't know what she ever saw, what she ever
saw in me I'll never know". And in the end chorus the line is "Say I'm
not a sensitive man" instead of "Guess that I was innocent too". Anyone
know what the deal is with this? He doesn't sing either, and I've never
seen them written in any other lyric sheets.
Also in 'Imitation' the line is listed "I can't help it with you, the
good and bad comes through"; other places I've seen it listed as "I
couldn't help it if you, you couldn't break on through". What's the
story with this one, anyone know? I know it's perhaps being pedantic,
but I don't want to be one of those nerds who sings the wrong lyrics
really loud on the bus...
PLUS, has anyone ever noticed that in Alice Childress, when he's singing
about how an "arranged marriage is not so good" that he says "No it
didn't work out the way *WE* thought it would". (Stop me if this has
been obvious to everyone since September '75). Is Alice Childress,
whoever she is, Ben's first wife?

Subject: How to play Brick (EZ Piano version)
I'm a self-taught, horrible piano player... and only moderately better
on guitar. Even so, when I learned how to play "Brick" (ah, those
beautiful, pre-heavy-rotation days), I learned it on guitar. So someone
else will have to give you the fancy piano stuff for the chorus. I can
only offer a basic chord chart:
G A D
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
G A Bm (could be a D, tho Bm sounds better)
Off the coast and I'm heading nowhere
G A D
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
Except the VERY last time, when the bass changes the chorus to:
G A Bm A/C#
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
Then those funny little chords after each chorus are just G and A
inversions, resolving to a D.
Did this help at all? I think all rock'n'rollers are really just
frustrated high school music teachers.

Subject: BF5 in JUICE
Free cd on the cover of the JUICE magazine (Australia only, I think),
track 2 = Kate. Inside there is a small blurb about them a la everything
you've read before (aside from an interesting reference to
cheese...dairy or otherwise):
"Lead by pianist and self-confessed cheese addict Ben Folds, this Chapel
Hill three piece wowed Australia mid-year with their tour, which offered
audiences a chance to hear something outside the rock norm..."
[and die-hard fans a chance to rock out to the best band on the
planet...not that I'm a sycophant, oh nooooo]
"...Following the single 'Battle Of Who Could Care Less', this song
somes from the band's second album, Whatever And Ever Amen."
Does anyone else find it interesting that attention is always drawn to
the fact that they're a three piece? Perhaps it's a tidbit left over
from the days of "But their name's Ben Folds FIVE - I don't get it...",
or perhaps people are still enchanted by the fact that they're rocking
out with a piano (and only two other instruments).
cheers,
Petra

Hi The Armchair:
There has been a lot of confusion as to the release of Naked Baby
Photos. Well, as far as I can tell, new music releases always come out
on a Tuesday...and no other day of the week. So, if you heard the date
once and just kinda forgot about it for a while and you know it was
maybe the 10th, or 14th or something like that...just consult your handy
calendar and check for the date of the Tuesday closest to the date you
think it may be (are you still with me? Had to reread the last sentence
for clarity, lost myself). I hope that I have helped some of you out,
and to those of you who clued into this long ago, just page down and
enjoy what's left of the Armchair.

Chris,
I have a very good copy of the Irving Plaza show if you would like to trade.
I would love to have the Supper Club show, so that would perfect. I will tell
you that mine is not an original DAT copy though, so if someone should offer
you one of the parent tapes, I fully understand if you want to take that offer
instead. Just drop me a line if you're interested.
Thanks in advance,
Jason Kilts
p.s. I have about a dozen other boots (and a couple hours of video clips) if
you're interested in a multiple trade by any chance. Just let me know.

crushes a while back...ahhh.... :) But I'm such a poophead. ANYWAY,
you mentioned places to crash. Now do you live near Detroit or no? I
will be driving from here to St. Louis to Chicago and then to Detroit for
the show....and will probably be spending the night, so I'll be staying
somewhere, but I don't know where. How far is that Cargo place from you?
What are the details on that show? ETC.? Anyway, I will probably be
getting a hotel room near the venue if all else fails, so anyone who
needs a place to stay is more than welcome. Also, email me if any of you
want to meet up at any of the the above mentioned shows: St. Louis,
Chicago, or Detroit.

OK, the other day my friend heard me singing some BFF tunes in English class
(as usual) and she officially diagnosed me with Obssessive Compulsive Ben
Folds Five Behavior.
Whatever that is!!!!!!
I think that BFF fans cannot have obssessive compulsive BFF behavior. Its
just that the three boys are so awesome and lovable no true fan can prevent
themselves from belting out "Song For the Dumped" in the middle of English

Right on, brother! If only TMBG was as popular as BFF is right now, we
wouldn't have to put up with lousy marketing and no video for three years.
Um, John Linnell plays the keyboards which are a kin of the piano. Ben Folds
plays the piano, so I now have Ben Folds Five content in my post.
