Dear folks,

I hear, almost all the time, BF5 compared to Elton John and Billy Joel.
That's funny. It really is. Fine, piano rock is a rather segregated community,
but comparing this band to them is like comparing Les Paul to Angus Young of
AC/DC. They both play guitar, don't they?
But really, I've always believed that if a comparison is absolutely
necessary why doesn't anyone compare this band to someone with some real
credibility? Joe Jackson, maybe? Punky, jazzy, not easily pidgeonholed... But
no, give the press their easy targets and let 'em be... Let's all hope they
age better than EJ and BJ did and don't start sending out awful records as
they coast on their former talents.
I wish I could get ahold of some show tapes, but there aren't many avenues
for trade around here. The ones I've found are too fixated on The Dead and
Phish to give me a break...

Oh well,

Hey everyone.. i'm new to the list, and pretty new to the band's wonderful
music. Sadly I've only heard "brick" off of the radio, and of course recorded
them singing "brick" on saturday night live a bit ago. But I'd like to hear
more.. much more. So I'm wondering about their history really.. how many CDs
/ singles have they put out, what are they, and anyone's reccomendations would
be really welcome.. thanks

The song Bad Idea is from The Truth About Cats and Dogs with Uma Thurman and
Jeanane Garafalo. It is a great movie and a pretty good soundtrack.

Spice Girls didn't hit the US until about March (actually, I think it was
around Feb, but whatever). They were huge in the UK, where BF5 were
performing, before that. Damn, though, I really wish that they had opened
for BF5. What a double bill!

Re: On the NBP liner notes it says that "Bad Idea" was writte for a
soundtrack. What movie?

"Bad Idea" first appeared on the soundtrack to "The Truth About Cats &
Dogs." And "Song For The Dumped" originally appeared on "Mr. Wrong."
Both versions differ from the ones on the respective BF5 albums.

Re: At the end of one of those songs recorded in London on 11/26/96 (I'm
not gonna get up and check) on NBP, Ben Folds clearly says "Thank you.
The Spice Girls will be back in March." Hmmm...let's look:
- --The Spice Girls didn't appear until around March 1997.
- --This announcement took place many months before their album was
released.
So am I misunderstanding him, or...DID THE SPICE GIRLS OPEN FOR BEN
FOLDS FIVE?

By November of 1996, the Spice Girls already had TWO #1 songs in England
(and most of the European continent), with a third not far behind. And
"Spice" was selling millions, even though it hadn't been released in
America yet. Believe it or not, not every album HAS to come out in the
United States first.
And besides, I seriously doubt the Spice Girls ever opened for ANY band,
let alone BF5... seeing as how they've played "live" a total of, oh,
maybe five times.

Re:Anyone know if the woman pictured on the front of the "Kate" singles
is actually Kate Folds?

No. She's a receptionist at their London record company's office who
happened to be in the right place at the right time. I believe Frank
mentioned this a while back.

Re: how do you get all these singles, imports, etc. all i have is the 3
general discs.

Try CDNow, Tower Records Online, or (better yet) your local independent
record store. But I believe any singles older than "Kate" are already
out-of-print, so if you didn't get 'em back then you'll have a hard time
finding 'em now. One of the rewards for being there from the beginning,
I guess...

Re: Is it just me or does anyone else find reading other people's
long-winded posts about their BF5 dreams excruciatingly, mind-numbingly,
I'd-rather-have-bamboo-shoved-under-my-fingernails-than-read-any-more-of-this-crap
BORING?

Yes.

I COMPLETELY agree.

Has anyone thought about why it is that this particular song has become The
Big One for BF5 when there were 4 singles before this one? Here's my
theory: the average person cannot handle a rockin' fast loud rock song,
like the previous four singles, without a guitar. It's more socially
acceptable to have a ballad sans guitar. This is why "Brick" is the big
song. I like it, but I think people will be really shocked and perhaps
disappointed if they buy WEAEA based on "Brick." Ah, the psychology of
music.

STILL wondering what the lyrics to "Bad Idea" are,
King Doug

I just wanted to say how pleased I am with NBP. What a great Album,
even if you already own all the singles and b-sides. I like dick
holster the best, not just because I've heard most of the other tunes
before, but because it was all improvisation on Ben and Darren's part
during a soundcheck! It'd be so tough (tough as in good) to have that
kind of improv skill. Just shows you the talent in the band.
