So many people are complaining about how much space these useless

problem by quoting or replying to these messages themselves.
Posts with no BFF content are off topic. So are posts of a moderating
nature (that's my job). Usually I will send a gentle reminder to

first thing, saying an artist reminds you of another artist doesn't mean
that the artist is a rip off artist. If you think that your girlfriend
looks like your best friend, it doesn't mean she MEANS to, or is INFLUENCED
by your best friend. Get over it.
>You forgot Queen. You can't put Jellyfish up there without putting Queen
>considering Jellyfish was about a half step away from being a Queen cover
>band.
I think that the opening of "underground" sounds a lot like Queen's
"Somebody to love" which is awesome, because both are awesome songs. i wish
BFF would be compared to Queen more, because all of queen were excellent
musicians (brian May, guitar god: Robert Sledge, bass god) and Freddie was
quite the showman, as is ben.

Just wanted to let everyone know there is a pretty good (and long)
article ("Punk Rock for Sissies") about Ben Folds Five in 'Genre' - a
gay magazine. I definitely recommend it (the article).
I hope this doesn't start up that stupid "Ben is a gay crackhead" rumor
again.
And I'd transcribe it but the Armchair has become so long already.
Insane.

Subject: Information I have....
Here's some information just for fun since this stuff has come up in
recent weeks and I'm in the mood to come out of lurking mode... (any
excuse not to study for tomorrow's midterm)
1) In Steven's Last Night In Town, the phone ringing is Ben's friend from
Minneapolis, according to Ben. It came in at such a perfect time that
they decided to leave it in. I think I actually met the fellow last
June...
2) The s/t album songbook and why it never seems to be available:
The book is published by Shinko Music of Tokyo, and it has been to press
twice. Once on 11/20/96, and once on 6/17/97... this is why they were
available on the website, dried up, and were then (briefly) touted as
available again. They are pretty much dried up in Japan as well, but it
would not be a great shock to see these go into another (third) printing,
so all is not lost.
3) The "live" version of "Song For The Dumped" in Japanese doesn't sound
very live at all, unless they completely eliminated all crowd noise and
played the song *exactly* like the album, only with a new vocal track over
it. "Live" is, I suspect, a misnomer.
4) All printed lyrics to "Bad Idea" say that the lyric reads "sweet
squirrel rim." While this may help end speculation on what it says, as
far as I know no one has ever been able to figure out what "squirrel rim"
is.
And now in the request department, anyone who sees the boys live and has
the fortune to find Doug and/or Trey somewhere amidst the confusion, give
them each a big kiss and a fond hello for me. Seriously. I'd do it
myself, but it looks like I won't make any of the shows this time around.
As for my porn name, it would have been Arthur Miller, according to one
system of naming, so I threw in the towel, deciding that some avenues are
best left unexplored.
And I shan't classify myself as an Emaline (Emailine?) or a Plastic Bitch
or whatever-- I'm just a geek.

Subject: NYTimes Article
I thought I would break from my 9 month status as an armchair lurker
with this bit of info....which I'm surprised no one else posted!
In this past Sunday's (Feb 1) New York Times Arts and Leisure section
there was a BIG article about the evolution of the power pop ballad.
Alongside the article is a really big, really good pic of all three guys
...worth searching the newspaper recycling bins to find.
I am going to quote the part of the article talking about BFF below. To
see the whole article (sans picture) you can go to www.NYTimes.com and
look under the Sunday Arts and Leisure section. If you can't find it or
you feel like you have to see the picture, email me privately. I would
be willing to make copies of mine, as long as there aren't TOO many
requests.
The article is in the Pop View column, written by Ann Powers and is
entitled "The Male Rock Anthem: Going All To Pieces".
All this male rage disguised as moping makes one long for
Marilyn
Manson, who at least admits his anger is ugly. Yet one group
has tapped
into the spirit of vulnerability without turning hateful. Ben
Folds Five is a
trio led by the short-haired, decidedly unheroic pianist Ben
Folds. In
"Brick," which his band mate, Darren Jesse, helped write, Mr.
Folds
risks real self-exposure. His piano picking out a mournful,
simple line, he
sings in a tone as plain as conversation about taking his
girlfriend to get an
abortion. She is the brick dragging him down, but the drift in
his voice, its
exhaustion, shows that he realizes he is the same to her.
It is hard to imagine holding up a Zippo for "Brick"; by
embracing the
bewilderment that life can bring, it disqualifies itself from
grandiose
enactments. Instead, it expresses true vulnerability, by
taking a risk that
most new power balladeers don't dare. Its gesture is so
simple: to let
ambivalence be. "Brick" acknowledges that heroism is not
always
possible. Its quiet epiphany reveals nothing more than two
people,
struggling. It illuminates on its own.
Sorry the post was so long, but I thought you all would like to see it.
And to the guy who mentioned Brubeck....I most definitely agree...that
thought came to mind the first time I heard BFF....along with Joe
Jackson, Rundgren, (Fats Waller anyone?)

Yu know, I really didn't want to do this, but whoever decided that we
needed to classify how big a fan you are put me over the edge. I have
put up with all of the unimportant messages hoping to find something
interesting, but I have yet to. Fans are fans. If they like BFF, they
like BFF. We are not here to judge them, just to listen to their
unimportant stories, I guess. So regretfully, I am leaving the armchair
after only 3 months as a member (Not because I wasn't a fan, but because
I hadn't discovered it) I wish you all the best, but please try to
write meaningful things to those who stay on the armchair to suffer
through the 50 Hanson/Spicegirl, porn names, Brick's really big and I
have PMS so it bothers me, notes.
Keep an open mind,

1) Hey Frank, the Armchair is hitting me about 3 times a day now. So
thanks... I think?!
2) Hey Rocketno8, I appreciate the information on the live "Smoke."
Thanks, glad to know they're not pulling a Radiohead. But if Ben really
was a male prostitute, would he be pulling a Carla Buzolich?
3) Thanks to whoever made the Joe Jackson comparison... Well placed. I
urge you all to buy Joe's "Greatest Hits" on A&M, it's not THAT
expensive, and maybe you'll wind up buying his whole back catalog like I
did. Here's to the Five covering "It's Different For Girls"...
4) Thanks to whoever brought up the "I was never cool in school"
T-shirt. Mine was stolen a while back... I'm dredging up painful
memories as we speak...
5) Thanks to whoever decided to upgrade themselves. On further
reconsideration, I've determined I AM an Uncle Plastic Bitch.
6) Thanks to me, for saving someone somewhere some $ by telling them the
"Fair (Disco Remix)" is just "Fair" with strings, like on the Japanese
"Brick." (In other words, don't buy it!!!!)
7) Thanks to the bar I was at for getting me drunk. I think I'll retire
now.

FALSE!!! They have played Evaporated live before, and I was there! For
those of you who have heard this post from me before, I apologize. It was
at Ziggy's in August 1996 and Ben came out alone and said, "I'm going to
try a risky encore..."
I remembered one line as I walked out of the club- "I poured my
heart out...and something about sad and free" I also remember thinking it
sounded like Jackson Browne a bit (see "Love Needs a Heart" on the Running
From Empty Album) and that Ben's voice was incredibly clear on the last
note, which was quite high. The song was also in F. (I have mostly
perfect pitch) Unless Ben has written another song that bears these
resemblances to "Evaporated," if you find someone who has the bootleg of
that show, you'll get that song.
And look there's more of us,
