OK. I had heard somewhere that Uncle Walter was somewhat based on Walter
Cronkow, Cronkite, whatever his name is. It makes a tiny bit of sense
considering his nickname is in fact Uncle Walter. He also has been in the
newscaster business for like 50 years, similar to when Ben says, "The voice of
50 years experience". Probably just some stupid rumor but if anyone can give
me any validity to this comparison or other insights to what the song is about
that would be just peachy.

Well, as a member of both the JBEL and the Armchair, I feel compelled to
speak. The JBEL isn't up in arms over this. At least that's my impression.
There are many BFF fans over in JBEL land and have taken the comment in the
manner in which it was stated. People were grateful when Ben defended Jeff
when that radio station made a tastless song parodying his death. There is no
venom over this recent comment by Ben, it's seen as a compliment.

Thanks for the concern. And, by no means am I speaking for every member of
the JBEL. But thanks and rest assured that there's no malice.

Love and light to you all!

thats all that matters, not how long we have liked them, or how many cd's,
bootlegs, or imports we have, cause thats irrelivent.....or however you
spell it...BFF is one of the greatest bands out there, and all that should
matter is if you enjoy listining to them or not...cause otherwise....its
kind of a put-down..and i doubt ben, darren, and robert would care, cause
we're fans and thats all that matters....well, i had to get that out....so

Hello all,
I feel the need to clear this up one more time...its a shame that no
one reads the liner notes anymore. Twin Falls is a Built to Spill song. Built
to Spill is an amazing band, with four records (one being a b-sides comp.).
The second record "Nothings Wrong with Love" is a masterpiece in pop writting.
Its has the original version of "Twin Falls" on it. Go to the store right now,
and buy it! Its on UP records.

Ok, I'll play along...I guess I'm an Uncle Plastic Bitch...I have a real

If Ben isn't coming close to Idaho, you should post some letters on the
armchair like so many of us did to get him to Seattle and Portland. (Maybe
we had nothing to do with it, but it's nice to think so!...;-)

The number for the American Youth Hostile in Seattle is 206-622-5443.
Their address is 84 Union St, but you can't get there by car from the top of
Union. Although you can walk down the stairs there. If you're in a car, the
Hostile is closest to the intersection of Union and Western.

There's also a hostile through Green Tortoise in Pike Place Market at 1525
2nd Ave. The number is 206-340-1222.

> I also have friends in Bremerton, so do you know how late the ferries go across?

Washington Ferry information is right at your fingertips at:
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/schedules/current/default.htm
Unfortunately, you won't be able to go right after the concert. The last
ferry leaves at 7:30 and costs $3.50 per person (walk-on or passenger)
or $5.90 for a car & driver. You can, however, drive to Bremerton (last I
checked).

You can also hang out at the Hurricane Cafe on 7th, just off Denny Way. It's
24 hours and 'stremely cool! Cheap eats, too. There's also Denny's on
Mercer near the tip of Lake Union.

hey all!

Since no one has posted about it, Ben was on Loveline last night (2/3), and
took it really well. Although at some points he seemed uncomfortable, it
sounds like he had a good time. There were a lot of calls praising him,
and most of the time on the show, the calls are for the most part love/sex
related. For those who are unfamiliar with it.. it's a call-in show where
people discuss their love problems. there WERE some questions for ben,
though.. and one of them was regarding Brick... ben went on for what seemed
like 5 minutes discussing the abortion thing, and that he talked to the
girl it was written about to see that she was okay with him talking about
it before its release... i'll entertain maybe a few trade requests... due
to time constraints for anyone that NEEDS to have it :)

take care,

Subject: Thoughts on NBP (IMO of course) / Gainesville's lost 97X?

Hi all,
I've been rather poor lately, so record-buying had to be halted
right before NBP came out. I hope this doesn't drop me a rung on the class
ladder! (All us poorer BF5 fans unite!) Anywho, I *have* heard 3 songs
from NBP on the radio here and I must say I'm disappointed for the most part:

        1) "Emaline" may sound a bit clearer as a studio recording, but the
previously-released live performance (Ziggy's '95 on "Where's Summer B.?"
single) is far superior. In the break with the starts and stops ("...for
stupid reasons...") the live version had a nice rhythm piano part and the
guitar in this one just seems superfluous. The live take just really sounds
like a band who's played it a lot, crafting it to perfection.
        2) The "Bad Idea" on NBP is fantastically brutal and fast. It
sounds like a lo-fi 4-track recording with that awesome pounding beat. I
guess this was unacceptable for soundtrack quality though. Viva lo-fi
Rock-n-roll!
        3) After only hearing the faster, livelier demo version of "Eddie
Walker" (big thanks again to Jina Conger!), this version almost seems
pitiful. Ben's vocal is pretty uninspired and just plain out-of-tune in
verses and it all seems to plod along wanting to go faster. Sure the demo I
have sounds like a degraded RA file, but at least the power is there on top
of the tape hiss :)

Is the NBP version of "Tom & Mary" less inspired than the Ziggy's
live version, too? I mean, it's a great release for those without any live
recordings, etc., but Caroline would've really had a better album with those
great live tracks and, perhaps, a cleaned-up version of the early, powerful
demo of "Eddie Walker" (they scored big with the early demo of "Bad Idea").
And I had thought the idea of NBP was to *bypass* paying for those pricey
import singles like "Where's Summer B.?"... Sorry for the bitchin', I'm
just bitter I can't go out and buy myself a damn copy! :) Eventually...

On another note, if there are any other listees in Gainesville, FL
(and it *is* 1998, there probably are) I hope you've heard the news. WRRX
97.7 has been bought by the owner of KTK, a large-profit-yielding Adult
Contem...zzzz station in the area. This could mean the end of one of the
most free-form commercial stations in the US. Jerry Gerard has supported
BF5 solidly since the day the self-titled CD came in and interviewed them
when our "college station" Rock104 didn't give a damn. So call 'em @
377-9770 as give your support. Late-night Gainevillians should also give
96.7 and 94.7 a shot... I've already said too much.

From: EtKreitzer@vassar.edu (Ethan Jon Kreitzer)
Subject: The real Joe Jackson comparison

As Joe Jackson's name has been popping up quite a bit lately, I thought I
would point out what I have always observed to be the biggest similarity
(more than the melodica). On Jackson's second record, the premise of the
first track "On Your Radio" is remarkably similar to to our beloved band's
second album's first track. The lyrics are as follows:

"On Your Radio" by Joe Jackson

Ex-friends, ex-lovers and enemies
I've got your cases in front of me, all sewn up
Ex-bosses you never let me be
I got your names and numbers filed away, I've grown up
(chorus) See me, hear me, don't you know you can't get near me
You can only hope to hear me on your radio
You're gonna hear me on your radio

Ex-teachers still coming through to me
Tough kids don't stop trying to kick me to the ground, I don't care
Go on just do what you do to me
You look so sick when you're pushing me around, you're nowhere
(repeat chorus) (end)

Anyways if this was discussed when Whatever was released I missed the
discussion because I was on spring break then, and I hadn't seen this
mentioned before. If it was, sorry for wasting space, but anyways I think
that if Jackson was an influence that had to be a conscious decision to put
that song as first song on second album because from the demos it would
seem to have already been written at time of first album. Ethan Jon
