A little over two years ago, BFF's first album was reviewed in
Rolling Stone, and even favorably. I may have even read the
review before I first saw them in October 1995, but it didn't
register until afterwards. The magazine was sitting on the
coffee table where I was setting up the computer that was to
become the web server for the people I was working for, so I
looked through that magazine a lot while waiting for things to
compile.

Those of us who got to see the inaugural event of the latest Ben
Folds Five tour in Portland, Oregon weren't disappointed. It was
as good as the out-of-the-blue, I-had-no-idea-who-they-were show
I first saw over two years ago.

Unfortunately the friends I went with were a bit traumatized by
Robbie Fulks. I gave Robbie credit for competent work in his
genre, but I'm not fond of the genre. My friends, who grew up in
Nebraska and Wyoming, apparently have too many traumatic
childhood memories associated with country and western music and
cringed through his set. We amused ourselves with the idea of a
country version of Julianne (sing with a twang, change the
phrasing a bit). We also chuckled in spite of ourselves at the
"She took a lot of pills and died" song.

I wish I could remember the set list, but it was a fairly long
show (about an hour and a half) and I remember even less of the
sequence now than I did just after the show. I was pleased that
they did "Missing the War" immediately followed by "The Last
Polka", as well as "Smoke", "Selfless, Cold, and Composed", "One
Angry Dwarf", the salsa "Julianne", and "Philosophy". I wished
they would have done "Uncle Walter". My friend Lance kept
shouting for "Satan is my Master", but I'm afraid all that did
was convince everyone around him that he was insane.

This show also reaffirmed one of the thing I like most about Ben
Folds Five -- it's not Ben Folds and his anonymous backing
players, but Robert, Darren, and Ben really working together as a
band. They're all fun to watch because they're all cranking out
music like mad.

hi,

A friend of mine was browsing through the MTV Unfurled webpage and saw
this, which is their current survey (or "Windbag Poll" as they call it):

Robert Smith will duke it out with Barbra Streisand on South Park next
week. Our money's on Babs, but...

Who would you like to see put the smack down as a guest on South Park?

 Radiohead
 Ice-T
 Ben Folds Five
 Pantera
 Wyclef Jean
 Kool and the Gang

so go vote for BFF where it really counts, people!

Greetings all, from a long time subscriber, first time poster. I will try to
keep things breif...
1. After seeing and meeting the BFF boys for the umpteenth time, just wanted
to let y'all know the success has not spoiled them! Thank God. I am sure we
are all thrilled for them.

2. All major Robert fans know that he is the featured bass player on the
Gladhands newest endeavor, "La Di Da", and even sings backup on the title
track. This is an incredible album, and I highly recommend it to all of you.
It is full of Rundgren influances, harmonies, and upbeat melodies that stay
with you all day. It is now on sale at your local Tower records, so run out
and buy it...

Thanks for reading-would love to hear form any Phoenix fans. And Jeff, if you
are out there, call me-my number is on your list.

for me, I will tell him your email address, and give you the credit. PLEASE

I just got done watching the cybercast, and it was excellent!!

The show compared with any of the shows I have seen them do (in
person!) and I only regret that I wasn't able to be there myself.

I got it on tape, and despite some internet and recording troubles,
the tape looks to be pretty damn good. email olers@wabash.edu if you
want to talk about trades...

so they've been on conan and dave and snl and 120 and they're gonna host

and the poster was on "all that" and they're in rolling stone and on the
cover of cmj and yeah "brick" hit #6 on the modern rock chart and WEAEA
climbed to #44 and celebs are being spotted at their shows

and yeah they're being cybercast and and the record's gone gold and
they're seemingly everywhere --

BUT -- it all didn't mean a darn thing until this weekend, when casey
kasem introduced "a hot new act from chapel hill, north carolina -- ben
folds five. a strange name considering there are only three members," he
wryly noted, welcoming "brick" at #36 as the only new song on this
week's "casey's top 40."

america -- nay, the world -- is now truly primed for bffmania. let's
hope the boys will keep their feet on the ground -- and keep reaching
for the stars!

lou (who just can't shake the casey-on-sunday habit)

p.s.: "brick" will almost certainly be a request & dedication somewhere
down the road, following in the misunderstood footsteps of r.e.m.'s "the
one i love"

Hey all. Since I'm fortunate enough to have a cable modem at home, I was able
to get tonight's JamTV/Rolling Stone Chicago show taped. About 98% clean -
had one section in the first song "Dr. Peyser" where the connection was lost,
and a quick tape change during the end of "Underground". Otherwise, it's
pretty damn clean. I should have it ready for trading in a few days. And, I
redorded the RealVideo I was able to stream, with my camcorder (yeah,
recording my monitor - hey, it's the only thing I could do). That might take
a while before I can dub onto a tape and mix the audio.

So, it's up for trades. Please check for it on my website, listed below. For
other BF5 trades only.

Hi! I'm a list virgin, I guess you could say. This is my first post, =
and I have a question. Sorry if it's already been answered...

OK, I was at the San Francisco show on 2/7/98, and they were selling a =
video, and I was just wondering if anyone bought it and what is on it? =
I'm kicking myself for not getting it, but there was a huge swarm of =
people and I already felt like cattle and I didn't want to have to hurt =
somebody. :) To make matters worse, they were giving away free =
autographed posters of the guys whenever you bought something. So now =
I'm *really* an idiot. Do they do this at all of their shows? Or am I =
just a *supreme* loser for missing the chance to get it?=20

just to reiterate(apparently some didn't catch it the first time), Ben Folds
Five will be on 120 Minutes on MTV next sunday(feb 22) at 12 midnight eastern
standard time and will play "Brick" for the umpteenth time on the Tonight Show
with Jay Leno wednesday feb 25 on NBC. the show starts at 11:30 easten
standard time but the band won't play until towards the end of the show around
12:20.

p.s.i can't believe they didn't play "underground" in St.Louis. that totally
sucks, especially since it seems like a song the band enjoy playing especially
and the fans will always love it. i just can't imagine a full bf5 show without
"underground." if i was at the show i would've beaten Ben about the neck and
shoulders. still, even a show that isn't good in comparison to others is still
pretty damn good.

Hi Everyone!
OK, I know there've already been a heap of NBP reviews posted, but
its only just been released here in Western Australia, and this is a
pretty positive review. Here 'tis:

> "Who else but Ben Folds would be wearing a Guns N' Roses T-shirt on
> the cover of an album? Of course he doesn't look anything but daggy,
> yet it says in bold terms how unafraid of standing out - and looking
> stoopid - from the crowd he is.
> In front of a sweaty, noisy audience in his hometown of Chapel Hill
> he sensitively croons, 'I was never cool in school, I'm sure you don't
> remember me'. {??} A voice booms in the distance 'Who the fuck are
> you?'. A joke now maybe, but there is a steely determination in his
> way that suggests being out of step with fashion has been a way of
> life rather than an affectation.
> Currently setting radio alight with the latest single, Brick, this
> album from the Five's old label may be a confusing piece of bad
> timing (ie: Brick is not to be found here). Still if NBP's are
> usually a cause of great embarrassment, there is nothing to be
> red-faced about here as this collection of odds and ends is filled
> with BFF's tuneful nonsense, dating as far back as their very first
> recording, and debut single, Jackson Cannery.
> From fully formed, harmony stacked prime pop like Eddie Walker,
> Alice Childress and Boxing, this goes all the way to a couple of live
> metal (mickey-taking) moments in the shape of The Ultimate Sacrifice
> and Satan is My Master and impromptu rehearsal tapes like the funk
> sludge For Those Of Y'all...
> They take the same care with the devil's work as they do with
> everything else. That is, they go about theier business as if walking
> on eggs while wearing golf shoes. If only there was more of it."

Oh, and all the Aussies out there should head to the JJJ webpage
(http://www.abc.net.au/triplej) and vote for Brick on the Net50.
Brick is currently at No. 6, but if we all vote lots of times, maybe
it can go higher!!

Catcha later,
Jodie
