Subject: My Final Opinion
Ok you guys, this is my final opinion on BFF popularity. So many long-time
fans have been drooping out of BFF because of their popularity. This is my
final word.
Remember The Refreshments (banditos)? they were so popular for a while, and a
good band also. in about a year, they became unpopular and now they are
practically underground. I think the same will happen to BFF. In about a year
or 2, they will be just another band to the trend-followers, and to us true
BFF fans there will be more opportunies to meet people who like BFF!!! So
don't think of their popularity as a reason to hate them, but more of an
investment in the future of BFF fans everywhere!! Yeah!
Ok, thanx fer yer time!

the girl on the cover of the Kate import singles is not Kate but actually a
secretary in one of Sony's London offices. i guess the real Kate didn't want
to be on the cover so they just photographed a random person and passed her
off as Kate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
when i first saw the band live two years ago, i knew in my heart of hearts
they would eventually become popular, and i cherished the time i had when the
band were not huge and something i could introduce to my friends via one of
their great songs(and "brick" is not what i consider one of these). it's
simply immature to get angry at an artist for progressing, whether it's
commercially or artistically. i would support "dave-o" if his song parody was
actually funny and not heavy-handed and ugly(and it was so badly done i did
not at first realise it was intended to go to the tune of "brick"). and am i
the only one who knows that in addition to the Godzilla and Truth About Cats
and Dogs, "Song For The Dumped" originally appeared on the soundtrack to Mr.
Wrong? who gives a fuck? ladies and gentlemen, this is how things work. either
jump on your magic carpet and turn back time, dave-o, or sit at your laptop
and mind you manners.
I'm an idiot so i messed this up. i listed "nick Scott" from Canada twice.
once under his real name, the othe rtime as someone else. this is how it
should go:
Ralph Kyatsu <inane_insane@yahoo.com>--No age, Toronto, "canadian, eh?",
got one of Darren's drumsticks. Cheap plug for his site:
http://www.geocities.com/soho/cafe/9956/bf5.html
and
"Nick Scott" <nickscott09@hotmail.com>--20, London Ont., goes to school in
Niagra Falls, first heard BFF on his school's radio station's demo copy of
WEAEA.
now that i got that cleared up, look for the second installment of the
"International Ben Folds Five Fan Poll". thanks everyone for replying so
far, and keep sending me mail!
**If you are from outside the continental US:
send me your name, age, city/State/Province, Country and something cool
about you and BFF. i'll have it posted.***
Yeah, I watched Dawson's Creek, but I was flipping channels and there it
was, so I'm sorry. Anyhow, as Dawson and Jen are sitting on the dock in the
melodramatic climax, BOOM, and there's Evaporated playing in the background. I
couldn't believe it. I thought maybe I had left my CD player on in the other
room, but it was indeed the television. Ben Folds Five infiltrating mass media,
and not just for Brick.
I'm not quite sure if anybody has ever heard of the show Dawson's Creek, or
if anybody already knew this, but anyway. Dawson's Creek is a pretty good
show on the WB network. Anyway, at the end, when there was a breakup, in
came EVAPORATED!!!! It was the perfect music for the moment. Well, just
thought that everyone could live so much better knowing that BFF is
everywhere. Till next time, later.
Subject: Peace Sells But Who's Buying...
Hello kids,
I've been very quiet on the Armchair lately 'cuz basically everyone
else has been filling up more than their share of space. But now I have
to offer my own damn nickel about Dave and his "Godzilla/Brick" parody
and the rain of fire he started. Ahem:
- --Dave, I appreciate your passion, even though I disagree with your
basic point: i.e., that the Five has sold out. The "Brick" parody was
certainly a novel way of expressing that feeling and it did give me a
good chuckle. (Although your syllable counting could use work.) Anyway,
you defended yourself pretty well on the last post... right up until the
"fuck you" at the end, so I'll give you credit.
- --The rest of you, I admire your passion as well. But take it easy on
the poor guy. He's a fan (well, a former one), he's making a point, he
deserves to be heard. If you're gonna offer rebuttal, at least do it in
a clever way. Don't threaten his life or anything, ya know.
- --My feelings:
Do I wish BF5 was still "my" band? Yes.
Do I wish teeny-boppers would stop latching onto "Brick" and only
"Brick"? Yes.
Am I tired of hearing what used to be one of my favorite WAEA songs? You
know it, foxeymophandlemama.
But am I upset knowing that 3 guys who sacrificed a TON for their craft
and their art (not to mention giving me hours of listening pleasure) are
now finally being rewarded... nay, VINDICATED... with commercial
success, noteriety, and (hopefully) financial reward? Hell, no.
Any of you who have actually made a go of being a working/performing/
recording/touring musician should be ashamed of yourselves if you think
otherwise. What about Ben's brother, Chuck, whose equally-deserving band
Bus Stop never even got the chance to REACH this level? Now that's a
real crime.
Not to cast stones, but Matchbox 20 is a sellout band. Everything from
wardrobe to hairstyles to kicking out everyone in the original band
(save the lead singer) was carefully arranged to move the maximum
possible number of units. Ben Folds Five is NOT a sellout. The boys
didn't change their sound or their show, they didn't kick out Darren for
his haircut, and they didn't do a "Puff Daddy remix" of "Brick" as a
desparate plea for airplay. They got some turtlenecks for a video. They
played "SNL" and "Letterman." Sheesh. I'd play Letterman tomorrow if he
asked.
If you don't like the direction BF5's music is heading, stop listening.
Lord knows I've fallen in and out of love with countless bands (almost
as many bands as women, I think). People change. Bands change. Deal. But
don't throw around the word "sellout" like your favorite group owes you
a favor not to get so big you can't get front-row seats for their shows
anymore. If their undiscovered status means that much to you, find
another band to love. There's plenty out there playing to empty rooms
right now.
Oh yeah, I could give 2 craps in a jar about that damn "Godzilla" movie.
I'm just glad I'll be getting a new Five song come May.
ok, I don't normally watch this show (mainly because I know I would get
addicted and I just don't have time for that anymore) but did anyone catch
tonights episode of DAWSON'S CREEK????!!!
In the last 5 minutes of the show they played EVAPORATED while the blonde chic
dumped the blonde guy. I was sooo excited cuz it wasn't Brick and I love that
song....so does anyone think this may be the next single they release?
One problem though, 2 seconds after the song which played for like 2 WHOLE
VERSES!!! they had this promo which showed a CD and said something like
"tonight's episode featured music by ....." and it was some chic, not a word
about BFF, so all those Brick lovers out there might not have a clue : ( Oh
well
Oh, and thanks to all those who have added to my "B" band list - it feels so
good to have one's ideas validated!!! : )
Play nice now kids : )
Rachael
PS: yes I still (and always did) love Brick but hearing something different
by them on tv was quite a thrill ; )
I'm sure that I wasn't the only one watching Dawson's Creek Tuesday night, but
for those of you who were not, you should have been.
During the last scene of the show (sad break-up scene), I started to hear some
faint, but familiar piano chords. I turned up the volume & realized oh my
gosh, its bff. they played evaporated. i missed most of the last scene
because i was singing along. i was caught off guard to hear something other
than brick, especially when i wasn't expecting to hear any bff. craziness.
Hi,
Did anyone notice that Evaporated from WAEA was on Dawson's Creek Tuesday
night? It was played in the last scene. I think it is great that other
people, like TV shows, are recognizing the band's talent. I am sure that
no one but loyal fans recognized who the band was because Evaporated is not
one of the most popular songs, but it is still really great that more
people are getting exposed to our favorite band every day. Check it out,
the episode aired 3-10-98.
