I believe Undergroundheads is a nice little BS term. I heard of Ben Folds
Five in late or early 95-96. The first song that I heard was Underground. I
saw it on 120 minutes(it was the only time the video was played on MTV I
think). Who gives a flying F*@k if people like Underground. If everyone
claims to be such true BFF fans, they would probably all be spending their
time listening to the bands music and not devoting all their time to
ridiculing fans who didn't have the pleasure of hearing them as early as
the rest of us. This Digest is about the fans and what they think of the
music, not what the fans think about each other. I thought Underground was
a kickass song when I first heard it way back when. I still think it rocks.
When people hear it, no matter what kind of mood they are in, they become
happy. Hell, that song still helps me cheer up when I'm bummed, and I am
sure that it probably does the same for everyone else that has heard it.
Let us talk about the music, and not abput what is wrong with the fans. Later.

Hi Fivers.
I haven't time to really respond to Mr. Chamraz the Hot AC radio guy
(yeah, it took me this long too), except to say he pretty much hit it on
the head. That's how commercial radio works. That music is a business
thing is also true no matter how we want to sublimate it. But it's not
all that cut and dried either. First off, how Brick got where it did is
because of the work of legions of 550 weasels who get paid to help the
bands they believe in (and a label actually believing in a band is
pretty amazing in the first place) get exposed to as many people as
possible - even if many of those people are frigging idiots. And
believe you me, that job ain't the easiest in the world. A friend from
one band has likened it to an art form in itself - inspiration and
stupidity and strategy and beauty and cooperation and a ton of luck. And
even *then* things may not work. I'm not putting weasels up on a
pedestal here, but you try being a weasel for a while and see how easy
it is...I know I couldn't do it. Anyway, this "selling out"
whatever-it-is isn't the boys going down on their knees to the highest
bidder or something. They just do the fabulousness they do, and this
legion convinces people to let them do it more. Ssometimes this means
doing it times maybe they'd rather not, like on lil' talk shows and
stuff. But how many of you in bands would kill for the number of gigs
BFF has been able to play on the strength of WAEA? Damn right. So
while maybe they could have survived without all this hoopla, it should
be appreciated while it's going on. (Would they have been able to snag
this Bacharach thing otherwise? What an experience that'll be!)
Besides, this Brick fever will last a while (especially if more stations
like Steven's pick up on it), but not forever. So just ride it out and
see what 550 does next and maybe there'll be more bitching to do.
Besides, BFF can't be under too much whore pressure when Celine Dion
pays the label's bills...sweet.
Wow. God forbid if I *had* had time. :-)
What I originally sent this for was to put my name in to the hat of
those looking for info on that Rundgren interview - audio file,
transcript, cassette, anyone who even heard the damn thing and can
recount it. There you go.
And I know people have been skittish about Ben and Kate's divorce.
What sad news this was. While I think discussion of the circumstances is
clearly out-of-bounds, the fact remains from all accounts (among them my
own), these two are good, kind, bright people, and we should be allowed
to offer our condolences in a terribly bittersweet time. Well, I've
offered mine, so if it got through, thanks Frank. Case closed.
I also think I've seen some sweets go 'round. But that's just me.

I'm really sorry about this and everything but I'm got a little complaining to do. First, about all this sellout crap. What's the deal? Who are we to call a band a sellout or not? I'm not sure about everyone else but I don't know their motives for goi
ng to a major label so I'm not going to criticize them for it. Instead, I'm just going to continue to enjoy the good music cause that's what it's all about anyway. Get off their backs! Who cares if one of their songs is played for a break-up shot on a
t.v. show. In my opinion, it was pretty smooth the way it was done. What's the difference between a performance on Letterman and a clip of their song on Dawson's Creek? Both of the shows are on national television so the band's getting exposure anyway.
The thing is we jump up and down and rush to our t.v. sets to watch them perform Brick on Letterman(which by the way wasn't a very good performance anyway), but we puff out our cheeks when Evaporated(a highly underrated and !
unnoticed song) gets played on Dawson's Creek. Be happy that the song got attention. I thought it was great to hear it.
Second, I've heard all about a supposed mid-year tour but does anybody know when the tourdates are gonna be posted? And does anybody know if they are coming back to Atlanta this time? I was pretty upset to find that not only Atlanta but the whole south
in general was passed by on the February tour. I miss getting the chillbumps when they hit that beautiful three-part harmony on Missing the War. Well, that's about it. I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my sellout lecture but that's the way I feel.
