Subject: BF5's internet concert - JamTV?
Well, I've been on the Armchair for a couple months now and I remember
hearing about the live internet concert BF5 did in Feb. Of course, I didn't
seem to realize exactly what that was, and I forgot about it completely until
I saw the clips of it on C/NET on Sci-Fi the other day. My question is: Is
there any way for me to view that concert on the internet still? Or was that
a one-time-only thing that I missed? Are there any plans of BF5 doing another
internet concert?
Thank you for any info you have. I have yet to see a BF5 concert live
and the internet concert is the closest thing I would have...

about covering a Girls Against Boys song:i was at BF5's and GvsB's final
performances on the second stage of Lollapalooza 96, and both bands seemed to
have become good friends, so there is a possibility.
"missing the war" has always been a favorite, but i didn't really like "fair"
until i saw them do it live.
next wednesday, March 25th, is the one year anniversary of the US release of
Whatever and Ever Amen. has it really been that long?

Ben Folds Five are definately playing on the World Cafe Friday. This
show is syndicated all over the country, but not in my area.
If anyone can tape this on DAT, I will trade the BF5 Breakfast at Dalt's
that happened a couple of weeks ago in LA.
If you can tape it, but don't know if you can get this station, E-mail
me and I'll tell you the station in your area.

Well, long time on post on my end. A few things to say.... someone
else on the list likes Christie Front Drive? Wow..that blew me away.
I could see them doing Twin Falls, but that's already a cover...and
they broke up, but it'd still be cool. I like the idea of good emo
bands covering BFF, hmmm.... Here are my ideas for bands who should
cover BFF...
Jimmy Eat World... "Smoke"
Rainer Maria... "Last Polka"
Elvis Costello... "Emaline" <that song reminds me of his stuff a
lot...>
Built to Spill... "Boxing"
The Cure... "Underground"
Sensefield... "Boxing"
Radiohead... "Best Imitation..."
I'd also like to see Sister Machine Gun and Green Day cover songs,
but m'drawing blanks...

Okay, I don't post very often, but I figured this story was well worth it.
I'm taking this beginning voice/singing class and every week or so we have
to get up in front of the class and sing a song. Usually, it's pretty
lame because we're supposed to sing these classical songs and traditional
English folk songs that, while culturally significant, are rather stale.
But recently I acquired some BF5 sheet music and decided that it would be
fun to sing "Boxing" as one of my songs. So yesterday I get up to sing,
and I introduce my song as "an imagined conversation between Muhammed Ali
and Howard Cosell..." And I gave the accompaning pianist the music, and I
just sang away, not really sure what to expect from my teacher (who's
really into those classical and traditional folk songs). Well, as I
started singing, I noticed this little smile curl up around his lips, and
he stopped listening to my singing technique altogether (which was
fortunate for me). He just crouched up behind the pianist's shoulder and
was reading along with the lyrics, completely enchanted with this little
waltz. And not only that, but I look out into the faces of the rest of
the class, and I could see three or four other people mouthing the words
as I sang. It was a pretty awesome feeling. So I get done with the song,
and the teacher was just chuckling--I mean, he was really entertained. He
commented on the music, and said, "you know I've never heard of this Ben
Folds guy, but what's ingenious about this song is that it has this
repetitive merry-go-round quality--not just with the music, but with the
repetition of the words "Howard" and "Boxing". It's a really fun song."
Can you believe it? My college-level voice instructor said that Ben
Folds' songwriting was "INGENIOUS". Go Ben!! That's pretty frickin'
cool! Not only that, but he asked me if I could make him a copy of the
sheet music for himself. "It might make a good encore," he said....
(I just had to smile at the irony of that)
Take care, all

Hey fellow BF5 lovers! I just wanted to say Hi cause I'm fairly new to the
list. I've seen BF5 in concert and for those of you who haven't, you should
make every attempt to do so. They are amazing in concert because they have so
much energy! I've noticed a fellow RENT lover on the list and I am also
completely obsessed with that musical! I've also seen that in New York with
the original cast and it was amazing, but back to the main topic here...Does
anyone know if BF5 has any software, such as a screensaver, etc? I recently
aquired a Matchbox 20 screensaver and I'd love to have one with Ben Folds
Five, especially one with a picture of Robert, he's quite adorable. Laters!

First things first...Naked Baby Photos, according to CMJ, is number 33 out of
the top 75 alternative radio stations airplay or something like that. I don't
feel like getting up to find the magazine now so bear with me please. I know
this was mentioned several issues ago, heck it could have been hundreds, but,
I was flipping through said CMJ issue and noticed that yes indeedy, Darren
does have a resemblence to Mark Sandman from Morphine. Speaking of
resemblences..does anyone else but me feel that Ben slightly..only slightly
here folks..kind of sort of looks like Scott Hamilton? Perhaps it's just
me...I can always blame my poor eye site. Finally, I think we should celibrate
one thousand issues when we hit it. I'm not sure how though... I remember when
we hit a hundred..oh, someone please hand me a tissue, I'm getting all misty
eyed. Frank..you've done a great job. We still have a hundred to go, so we
have time to think of something. Goodbye for now kiddies!

Okay, I'm not sure about this but I went into my local music store the other
day and asked if anyone knew when BFF sheet music would be in or if it would
ever be in. The guy I asked seemed to know the band well and said, "oh yeah,
thats's due out in a little over a month from now." This was a little less
than a month ago. Anyways, I don't know if this guy knew what he was talking
about, but if he's right the sheet music should be coming soon! I am sooo
excited!!!!! :)

Digest #890
Hey...You were questioning the rhythm of a cappella music. Well, for a while
now, many a cappella groups (especially college) have percussion, etc. by
making sounds with their mouths. There are usually one or two members of the
group where this is their main duty. If you want to hear it, search for the
Best Of College A cappelle (BOCA) webpage & download some of the songs. Or,
check out The Academical Village People from U VA. Their webpage has a great
version of Bel Biv DeVoe's "Poison" A Cappella or Montell Jordan's "This is
How we do It". Both have a strong rhythm section.

Ok everyone loves to bitch about Brick and the "depressing" point that
the band is now popular. Well The following lyrics are from a band
called Five Iron Frenzy, read and then reconcider you stance on the
sellout...
Handbook for the Sellout
You found a way, to draw a line, between the world and you. Faking
your identity it's true. Did you think the word "alternative" was only
meant for the likes of you? Do you think that they're too cool now?
Being popular is lame. You're the one who made them popular, all their
songs are still the same.
You found them first, it made you stand apart, you know? But then
everyone jumped on the same bandwagon, making you an average Joe. A
lemming for the mediocre, you were just a plain old joker, status quo.
Blame it on the band now. If you prick them do they bleed? What's the
point in playing what they want, if you won't let them succeed?
Do you remember where we all came from? Do you remember what it's all
about? When you made a point to be objective, before you started
writing Handbook for the Sellout?
You sunk your worth in being diffrent, just to be like your own kind.
You traded in objectiveness, for the underground you follow blind.

I probably won't be the first to write about this, but a Washington Post
writer did a story about the band that appeared in Friday's paper. He seemed
really into the fact that Ben Folds were supposedly "the jesters of indie rock,"
as he put it. The article was pretty thorough, but nothing ground-breakingly
perceptive or new. Nonetheless, a good read and a decent photo. If you don't get
the Post or your local paper didn't pick up the story off the wire, e-mail me
for a copy. Plus, any with tapes of the current tour interested in trading,

If anybody's interested, I just taped a great interview of the boys that they
did while they were in town a couple of weeks ago. It was just before the
Philly show with Shawn Stewart of WXPN. Which also explains The "This is for

with songs like Kate, Emaline, Alice Childres and Eddie Walker thrown in. It
ain't bad. E-mail me privately if you want a copy. I'm sure we can work
