Hey people. I've also noticed all the negativity about BF5 becoming popular
now. I agree with the lyrics to that song that Jeremy sent. Personally I'm
happy for Ben and the guys. Now they have more people with whom to share their
music and they are succeeding in life by doing what they love. The best thing
is, though, that they are not changing because of their success. They still
play small clubs and afterward they still come out to meet the fans. Their
fans are important to them because we are the ones that have supported them
and helped to give them their success. I just love this band and I don't care
how popular they become I'll still love them. So there's my $.02.
Thanks for the space.

Everyone: Brick is currently #4 in the Channel V By Demand top 10 video
list. I don't know whether to cheer or cry...
(I think I'll cry, seeing as I've not ONCE yet seen the video in its
entirety. YET.)
But want some really bad news? It's beaten by Aqua and the Backstreet

I realize this might sound like a stupid question, BUT I'm going to ask it
anyhow :) I was just wondering how one would go about taping a show...what
kind of equipment is needed? How close do you have to be? etc. etc. etc.....
I am SO going to the May 10th show in San Jose, CA, and I would love to be
able to tape it! So I was just wondering if anyone could give me a few
helpful hints from Heloise on how to do that :)
Gracias,

Mad props to the bloke who posted the Handbook for the Sellout lyrics...I
was thinking of doing it too. Five Iron Frenzy rock my world. If there
are any ska fans who are sick of the current blast of ska-crap, check out
FIF. They have two albums on 5 Minute Walk/Sarabellum records and they
are sweet. I think Ben Folds Five should cover their song, "Arnold,
Willis and Mr. Drummond" yep you guessed it, its about the show Different
Strokes.
Bands I would like to see cover BFF...
Green Day - Bad Idea
Matthew Sweet - Philosophy(Boy I bet he could turn that open into a sweet
solo)
Elliott Smith - Evaporated
Belle and Sebastian - Tom and Mary
Counting Crows - Jackson Cannery
Modest Mouse - For All Y'all That Wear Fanny Packs
Flaming Lips - Julianne
Oh well, that's enough for me...
Kudos to the 1000th issue party!!! I too remember back when we turned
the century and one armchair came every three days...and now the
Millenium is in 30 or so days. WOW!

Subject: Sheet Music Update
A couple of days ago I posted about my offer to create some sheet BF5
music if the people who were interested in it would chip in for the $77
sheet music software (maybe 11 people at $7 each?). Since then, more
people have emailed me suggesting I steal some sheet music software than
people interested in helping me obtain some legitimately. I've also been
inundated with suggestions for "free" PC notation software, although I
use a Mac. (And that software probably wouldn't let me play my keyboard
into it, anyway.) One other thoughtful person took it upon himself to
mail me a 1Mb software enclosure, tying up my computer for several
minutes before I was able to retrieve any of my other mail.
What I *haven't* received is very many responses from people who were
interested in my offer as I stated it, despite the fact that it seems
like every other Armchair contains a plea for sheet music, and despite
the fact that people are always emailing me asking me how to play a
certain song or read a chord chart. So never mind. Hopefully the band
will eventually publish their own sheet music books.

Subject: State of the Armchair
Okay guys, I need you to listen up for a minute. I think we need to get a
few things straight about just what we're doing with the Armchair. I'm sick
and tired of these long, flimsy posts that take up a great deal of space and
are of little consequence to the rest of us. Think about it: we're all on
this mailing list because (I assume) we like the band. Is it really
neccessary to explain how much you love Ben/Robert/Darren/Brick/etc. to your
fellow fans? We, of all people, already understand.
I also subscribe to the Phish mailing list, "Benjy's Digest." Benjy Eisen
manages the list and hand-picks the posts that are included in each issue.
It makes for much more worthwhile reading. Subscribers don't find themselves
being subjected to a zillion lines of frivolous crap. Now, I'm not asking
Frank to do this for the Armchair--I'm asking YOU to do this. Here are my
suggestions for ways to Spring-clean the Armchair:
1) Think before you post. Does everyone really need to hear about your
Matchbox 20 screensaver, or about how much you hate Dawson's Creek? Examples
of good posts: concert reviews for those of us who missed out; descriptions
of personal encounters with the band; helpful information on how to acquire
BFF live tapes or imports; requests for trades. Examples of drivel that
belongs elswhere: anything regarding the meaning of "Brick"; posts about why
you think Robert is soooo cute; misinformation; posts requesting BFF to come
to your town; most of all, posts unrelated to BFF. Which brings me to...
2) Use the newsgroup. Not many people do--it's alt.music.ben-folds-five. If
your ISP doens't carry it, use DejaNews. Many of your anecdotes belong here.
I'll admit, it's funny to hear stories about the ignorant Brickheads we
encounter. But the stories can easily be moved to the newsgroup, saving
space and increasing the popularity of the newsgroup.
I love the band; I love that we have this mailing list to share with each
other. All I'm asking is for you to please be considerate when you post. It
will save space, time and some of our sanity.

I'd really like to Built to Spill do "Boxing" and The Mr. T Experience
do "Song for the Dumped." It really reminds me of their stuff.
About the software, the Sessions at W. 54th website has a BF5
screensaver. Sorry, but I don't remember the address.
I hope that helps,

Subject: Kane wo Kaese/The Talking Between Tracks/The Gay Disco Story/FTYWWFP
Hey Armchair-ers--
Just some stuff I've wanted to ask and comment about: (This is really long, so
you are forwarned!) ::evil laughter emanates::
KANE WO KAESE: Sorry if this has been asked before, but I just recently (well,
not really) downloaded the MP3 file of Song for the Dumped in Japanese (Kane
wo Kaese...yes, I can spell it right thanks to my best friend who happens to
be Japanese) and I'm going insane trying to figure what Ben and Darren are
rambling on about at the very end of the song...as BFF plays "cruise ship
dates" and "Darren's __________ (what?) problem is exacerbated" (sp?) by this
(by WHAT?) and "the Big Fat (Something) Tour turned out to be just exactly
that..."Can anyone help? I've searched about a dozen web pages and found
nothing...
NEW WEB PAGE: So I'm making my own web page, which should be up in a month,
about all the nice talking and such that goes on between songs. This should be
a good resource for everyone with the WAEA without the talking between
tracks/hidden track at the end of Evaporated...as soon as I get it up...The
only song where I can't understand what they're saying at the end is Kane wo
Kaese. Even AFTER 50 or so listens. Hmmmm.....
THE GAY DISCO STORY: Yeah, I've been a fan for a while and I've noticed that
in almost every article written about BFF they have to mention something about
how the band always lies about how they got together...What I want to know is
where the original source of the "We met in a gay disco where Ben was a DJ and
Robert and Darren were karaoke stars" story is. Email me personally, because I
don't want to waste MA space, please. ;-)
FOR THOSE YA'LL WHO WEAR FANNY PACKS: I'm taking a shot at transcribing
FTYWWFP and I'm having trouble with the following lines...suggestions anyone?
"Y’all shouts out to my main manager man, Al Wolmark
Known as AKA (?)..."
"Been around the world and I (?)
I don't mind singing and I don't mind rappin'
(?) get my shit..."
"Alright take this (?) out with a piano solo..."
"Feel the time, what’s up y’all
I got this funky rhythm going on here
I’m gonna give shout out to my homeboy out in LA. (I'm not sure about this
line)
What’s up, boy? What’s up, y’all? Come on! (Oh God damn...(low muttering))..."
That's it for now...sorry to take up so much space...:-P

hiya! i haven't posted in a super long time, but i'm back. anyways, i forgot
who mentioned it, but i totally agree--BEN FOLDS LOOKS LIKE SCOTT HAMILTON'S
LONG-LOST TWIN BROTHER!! i have been saying that for so long! a few months
ago, scott hamilton was on the cover of people magazine and i thought it was
ben. i told my mom, who just laughed. then, my sister came downstairs and goes
'look, jess, your favorite band is on the cover of people magazine." it was so
funny. and scott hamilton is in a commercial that i saw the other
day...something for ice skating, i think...and i thought it was ben. i was
thinking 'why is ben on skates??' what a freaky coincidence. i can't believe
no one mentioned it until now!!
anyways, i went to a matchbox20 concert last night, which was good, but it
increased my love for ben folds five and ben folds five fans. the concert was
good, but i could only compare their concert and concert style to ben folds
five. my friends say i have gone over the edge w/my ben folds five obsession.
and i went to a bff concert at the same place just a month ago and their
concert was so much better! and the fans...wow--night and day! the fans last
night at MB20 were rowdy and crowd surfing and moshing...i never appreciated
ben folds five fans until last night. we are so calm! and we're so much like a
family! i love you guys! bff fans forever!! --jess
and i'd like to publicly thank daniel (keyserdan1) for sending me such an
incredible bff tape! thanks hun!!
