has anyone heard about the Burt Bacharach tribute coming up in NYC? It'll
be performed (and taped) April 8 then broadcast on Turner April 15. BFF is
playing and here's a partial list of others: Salt-n-Pepa, Sheryl Crow,
Chryssie Hynde, Luther Vandross, Elvis Costello, and Mike Meyers (the
actor). IMHO, BFF is second only to the great Elvis Costello, and they're
the main reason I'm writing an article about the show.

Only problem is, there are NO press tickets, so I'll be going to a dress
rehearsal. Anyone going that would be willing to give me the low-down the
next day?

cheers,
carolyn

PS Burt Bacharach does rule.

The local radio station "The Zone" here in Minnesota has been advertising the
"Edgefest V" in Sommerset, Wisconsin recently and that BF5 will be one of the
25 bands playing there! Well, my questions are (to those MN/WI residents that
have gone to an Edgfest before), how is Edgefest set up? does it get sold out
fast? is there seat numbers on the tix? any age limits?

I tried searching Ticketmaster for tix, but couldn't find anything about the
Edgefest (on "The Zone" web site they say that tix are on sale now through
TM...). Anyone know about getting Edgefest tix through TM online?

Please e-mail me at Dreamer528@aol.com if you have any answers to my
questions. Thanks!!

Hey ya'll:
You're not going to believe this, but I was thinking today and I came up
with something. I hope Ben Fold's Five doesn't turn out to be like
Metallica!!!!
OK, here's my point. Before "Metallica" the album came out, the band had a
very large following of dead-out, hard-core metalheads. Everyone who wore
black T-shirts and tight jeans loved 'em. Now that they have become popular,
they have also started to suck! Their old fans can't stand them anymore and
(GASP) Lars is wearing dresses!
Granted, and thank G-d that BF5 is a bunch of musical geniuses, or I'd be
really worried about them. Nothing they can do would ever suck.

i think the name has something to do with poker (as if i would know, but
thats what i've heard). and then i thought wouldn't it be neat if it in any
way referred to monty python and the holy grail, one o my absolute favorite
movies....because some bands have a number thats the number o the people in
the group, ie the Jackson five (at least i hope so, i know nothing about them
but the name springs to mind ;-þ). like BFF is called five but there are three
people in the band.....in holy grail there is the whole thing where king
arthur says five when he means three:
King Arthur: one, two, five!!
Page: three sir!!
King arthur: three!! ( and lobbest thou thy holy hand grenade.....)

i am sure the two are wholly unrelated, but i always got a kick out o that.

I knew SFTD would be the next BFF single, but imagine my surprise to hear
it, almost all the words intact, on 100.3 Friday night driving through
good old Pennsylvania. (And I never listen to the radio). Apparently it
was going head to head with another band. Well, I tried calling 5 times,
but couldn't get through. I'm happy to admit tho that BFF won
unanimously against what one person called "the vanilla ice rip-off" who
couldn't make up their mind if they were rap or heavy metal. So BFF
moves on to the next round, with SFTD scheduled to be played Mon. at 10.
Maybe this is the one time in your life it will be worth it to listen to
the radio.......

<<This same sort of thing appears to be happening with BFF. The old
fans get upset that they no longer have something of their own, Brick
skyrockets into popularity, the album sells a lot of discs, the old fans
call the Boys sellouts, and you wonder why you bought the album in the
first place. Sure, there are still a few devoted fans, but liking BFF
isn't "cool" anymore. I would hate for this to happen to our boys, but
that looks like where they're going based on what i've seen on the
Chair. >>
ACtually, i think something very different is happening, at least in my
experience. i dont' think that people will turn on bff, i know i'll
always love them, what makes me mad about their growing popularity, is
not the fact that they are sucessful, they deserve all the happiness in
the world for the music they make, but what makes me angry is the
general population, appreciating bff for the WRONG REASONS. These are
people who listen to Celine Dion and Hanson, thinking that bff is of the
same caliber :one hit wonder pop-specialists. when in reality bff is so
much more profound and talented than the music that has been surgically
altered to sound the same as every other crap pop song out on the
market. that is who people are mad at, the population, not at bff, and
i don't think loyalty will shift. sure i'm selfish and i want bff to be
"my band" but that's not realistic or fair (all is fair, )
nevermind. okay, i'm taking up too much space. anybody have any
comments?

Hey people!!

Popped into a local music store today and they were selling some BFF T's. I
was pretty surprised. Merchandise is becoming more accessible here in Oz.

They had two marron "Kiss My Ass" T-shirts. With BEn Folds Five on the front
with the piano, bass and guitar icons and "Kiss My Ass on the back.

The other one was blue with "Ben Folds Five" wriiten on the front pluss the
piano icon.

Also they were selling BFF self titled cd for only $ 21.95 which is bargain
saying it cost me $30.95

Anyway, thats all folks!

people keep asking about meeting them, so i'll tell you my experience. i went
to a radio show and before and after, they were just standing around, waiting
for people to talk to them. it was awesome. you could even eat bagels with rob
and darren. then at the show later that night i had to leave right afterward,
so i didn't get to talk to them again, but to my understanding, people could
easily meet them. if you've never met them, you're missing out.

Sing us more songs, piano men.

After a short break from touring, Ben Folds Five plans to return to the
road for a string of dates in the south and west, beginning April 26 in
Charlotte, North Carolina and ending on May 11 in San Diego.

But before getting back on the bus, the band will make an appearance at the
Burt Bacharach tribute April 18 in New York City, as we previously reported
(see "Noel Gallagher, Ben Folds Five, Mike Myers To Sing Bacharach").

In related news, a spokesperson for Whiskeytown says that the sessions held
last Christmas between band frontman Ryan Adams and pianist Ben Folds has
yielded two new songs.

Although the spokesperson said that no definite decision has been made
regarding the material, there's talk that the tracks may be included on
re-releases of Whiskeytown's older indie-records, which their current
label, Outpost Records, has acquired the rights to.

The dates just announced for the next leg of the BF5 tour are:

4/26 - Charlotte, NC @ Center Cityfest
4/29 - Durham, NC @ Duke University
5/1 - Knoxville, TN @ World's Fair Park
5/2 - Nashville, TN @ Nashville River Stages
5/3 - Memphis, TN @ Beale St. Music Festival
5/4 - Auburn, AL @ Auburn University
5/5 - New Orleans, LA @ House of Blues
5/8 - Las Vegas, NV @ The Joint/Hard Rock Hotel
5/9 - Hollywood, CA @ The Palladium
5/10 - San Jose, CA @ San Jose Events Center
5/11 - San Diego, CA @ 4th & B

Hey. Well, i agree with LadZERO 100% there. I was one of the bastards that
ditched out on the Bosstones after The Impression That I Get. But, really.. i
didn't like the album when it came out. I didn't expect it to become popular,
and was pretty upset when it did and they dragged the Pietasters on tour with
them so that i had to go to see the Pies for 15 bucks at some seated theater,
but all the same.. So, i still have the old albums, haven't listened to them
for quite a while though.

And, while i can say that i wouldn't ditch out on BFF no matter what, (as
they're currently in my #2 spot for favorite bands, closely following the
Pies) but i know i suffer from that awful "if everyone else likes them, then i
don't" syndrome, so we'll have to see what happens, i guess. But anyway, the
Bosstones and BFF are unfortunatly a close comparison.. Take it easy..

So I was in Carl's Jr. yesterday and as I bit into my burger, Brick
started.
It was somewhat of a trip, and I thought, "is this the band that I used
to have to force my friends to listen to a year and a half ago?"
I also heard Brick as a Muzak hit at a coffee shop a while ago... freaks
me out.

But I'm not really upset that Ben Folds Five is starting to get popular.
The only thing that bothers me is that Battle of Who Could Care Less and
One Angry Dwarf didn't get the same sort of airplay. I never really
liked Brick all that much. When I first got the album, I used to skip
over that song... straight on to Song for the Dumped. I really think
that people get the wrong impression if Brick is the only song they've
heard. But, really... who cares? They couldn't be "our little band"
forever.
What's funny is when Brick is sandwhiched in between two stupid songs on
the radio playlist, by say... um... Matchbox 20 and Savage Garden. Oh
what a world...

Subject: BF5 the poker game! *** It's Aces!

About once a month my girlfriends
and I get together and play poker!
Last time we were playing, I introduced this game.

Ben Folds Five; the poker game

(It's a game of roll'em - High / Low)
Everyone antes in (of course)
Fives are wild
Deal seven cards, face down
Everyone organizes the cards in the order they want them to be shown.
Then everyone rolls there first card
There's a round of betting
This continues till five cards have been rolled.
At this point everyone declares if they are going high, low or both
ways.
There is another round of betting
Then everyone shows their hand and the pot is divvied up.

It's a great bluffing game!
I didn't win is one. I'll try it a couple more times, if
it doesn't pan out, I will just stick to baseball.
If anyone out their, in armchair land, has a version
of BF5 poker that works for them, drop me an e-mail.

I know I can't speak for everyone on the Chair, but I for one don't give a
fuck about who thinks what. I love BF5. If people want to call them sellouts,
those people can fuck themselves and quit listening to the boys. If people
want to tell me I'm weak for digging a sellout band, well, they can fuck off,
too.

I love my BF5. I will stick by them even if they make a polka record. Fuck
everyone who has a problem with that.
