Hey fellow Aussies,

There is an article on the Sydney citysearch site
(www.sydney.citysearch.com.au) about BFF:

Perhaps North Carolina's Ben Folds Five are one of the music world's
most unlikely new stars. The trio use no guitars in their music. Rather,
the focal is on Ben Folds's Steinway grand piano, and the instrument is
often thrashed as much as a trusty old axe.

Harking back to the 1970s and early '80s for inspiration, Ben Folds Five
songs are ridden with quirky melody and college-boy harmonies, largely
performed with great fervour - a trademark of their live performances.
Their music finds allies in artists such as Joe Jackson and Elton John,
although the spirit of punk is never too far behind, typified in their
indie-rock haven hometown of Chapel Hill, where
bands such as Polvo and Superchunk have ruled the roost.

Last time Ben Folds Five came to Australia, they caused a stir with
their appearance on the Midday Show, singer and songwriter Ben Folds
destroying a piano, angering (to put it mildly) Midday Show band leader,
Geoff Harvey. He publicly decried the band after the incident, but it
seemed to boost their profile here, rather than hinder it.

After recording independently, Ben Folds Five were signed by Sony Music
last year. The band built their own studio from the deal, their first
album for the label being the hugely popular Whatever And Ever Amen.

<< Is it only me, or does anyone else seem to like different song every time
 they listen to W&EA? >>
nope, not just you....it happens to me every time i listen to that cd, right
now i'm on a "selfless cold and composed" kick i can't stop listening to it,
but we'll see what song i am addicted to next week :)
 <<Technically not a
BFF fan, but still a fan of that effervescent and everchanging master of the
ivories, Mr. Folds>>
thank you for clearing that up, just making sure i got my facts straight
also...sorry for the long post but everyone says that BFF doesn't play kate at
their shows anymore...they played it in St. louis on valentine's day for their
encore, so i'm glad i got to see them play it before they stopped playing it
at their shows (too bad, it's a great song)

Ben Folds Five Address Abortion, Rock with Dave Matthews
Our quote of the day comes from Ben Folds Five bassist Robert Sledge, who
tells the "Asbury Park Press" that performing the song "Brick" (which was
written from the point of view of a male high school student whose girlfriend
is about to have an abortion) is a sort of cathartic experience for the band.
"[The situation] happens to a lot of people, and a lot of men have opinions
about it," he said. "Basically, I never felt that men were allowed to care.
It's obviously painful for the guy, and that's important to know." Ben Folds
Five played the song to their largest audience yet over the weekend when they
opened for the Dave Matthews Band and Beck at Giants Stadium.

finding a new favorite song is, to me, the sign of a good band...i think that
this should happen regularly if the bands' cd is good....this happens to me
all the time with REM (a terrific band, as you all know....and there is no
chance of me being flamed on this, because it is fact, much like the greatness
of bff...but i digress)..at first it was OAD and then SFTD, but since then the
softer stuff has gotten me, especially MTWar....and as for the first album,
ive never had a favorite because i feel that the entire album is so amazing i
cant skip one song....

thats just my opinion, i could be wrong

I'm really interested in trading for bootlegs- I don't have any BFF. I
have Pearl Jam at Lolapalooza, Fiona Apple, and lots of Oasis. If you're
interested in trading, contact me personally at PookieB453@aol.com. I'm
particularly interested in the BFF concert on October 31, 1997 in Lakewood
Ohio- it was incredible and I'd just about kill to get my hands on a bootleg
of it. Thanks!!

~ PS ~ hey, if anyone was at the Sean Lennon/BFF/Beck show at Blossom a

It's 2 am and I just returned from the Pgh. show, and let me just say that I
am now the happiest girl alive :) I was in the 4th row in the pit, wearing a
white tank top, and the "hi my name is... Frank" nametag, so you may have seen
me. If ya did, email me... as long as you don't hate me for dancing like a
maniac. :)

I was able to obtain the setlist from Robert's amp... yeah baby! Here it is,
verbatim:

Star Lake

Jackson
Emaline
Alice
Walter
Air
Jelly
Brick
Boxing
Dumped

they threw an OAD into the mix too. It was just the kickass show! Ben threw 2
piano stools into his piano in the end, but they stayed in one piece. Robert
was shakin his booty a rather large amount of the time. He took a lot of care
to let the audience see his fine ass. :) Ben was so jammin too, and Darren
did a smashing drum solo.
Elliot Smith was enjoyable. Beck sucked, but that's my own personal opinion.
I am such the ecstatic girl right now.. i love you all!

Hey all!

I forgot to post here that I had heard Robert in a radio interview in
Boston last week and he had some interesting things to day (most were
things that you already know, so I won't repeat them). But one that I did
find particularly intriguing was the the guys (along with Beck's band) are
now getting into yoga pretty heavily...

Just thought that that is the type of thing that us groupies should know...
*grin*

Take care!

P.S. Regarding the very minor thread about "why is everyone praising Anne?"
and the responses: I am not interested in any type of worship... so I will
send all mana I receive to Eris. Unless, of course, it is a ton of it, in
which case I will wield it for the greater good. Cheers!

weird for me to play air piano even though I play the piano in real life?

Well I just got in from the Beck, BEN FOLDS FIVE, Elliot Smith show at =
the Starlake Ampitheater in Pittsburgh, PA.

Well the best part of the show was DEFINITELY Ben Folds Five. Elliot =
Smith was so-so but he did do a great cover of "I'm So Tired" from the =
Beatles white album.

Ben Folds Five just ROCKED the place. I was really suprised that they =
played "She Don't Use Jelly" from the Lounge-a-Palooza album. I didnt =
write down the whole set but i do know they opened with Jackson Cannery =
and by the time they were at the last song I was so stoned from the =

if the were closing with OAD200SF or Song for the Dumped.=20

It was a great show though. I stayed for the first few songs from Beck =
(Loser, Novicane, Deadweight) but he was getting on my nerves and i had =
to leave because i had work early the next morning.
