   Send an e-mail message to:

A WORD FROM THE LISTOWNER
It seems that the off-topic chatter has gone way beyond the
acceptable level. Any discussion that is not related to Ben Folds Five is
not permitted on the Armchair, and this includes replies to other
messages from the Armchair that are themselves off-topic.
I did not want to have to do this, but I have started unsubscribing
users without warning who violate this rule. I do not want to become the
List Nazi, so please cooperate by keeping your posts clean and on-topic,
or I may be forced to remove you without warning also. Please take the
time to reread the information file that arrived when you subscribed. If
you don't have it anymore, send a message containing the word 'intro' in
the message body to armchair-request@maillist.il.fontys.nl.

MAJORDOMO DOESN'T LIKE IT EITHER
I started to think that Majordomo was on strike because of the off
topic mess, but it was because of a problem with a new version of
sendmail at the server that caused issues 1064 and 1065 to not be mailed.
If you submitted a post between roughly 8:00PM EDT on Friday (0000 UCT
Saturday) and 8:00PM EDT Saturday (0000 UCT Sunday), and the message is
truly related to BFF, please resubmit it.

Sources at VH1 say that the Hard Rock Live show with Ben Folds Five and
Squeeze will air Friday, August 7, 1998. The show is on at midnight
(actually early Saturday morning). Unfortunately, it seems the show is
only an hour long, so it may mean that Ben Folds Five's set will be cut
to a half hour. They recorded close to an hour of music, so I hope
that's not the case.

hey all you traders and newbies alike. I seem to be getting tons of
requests for tapes these days (mostly BFF, 2:1) and i am not even sure
where everyone gets my address, but i'd like to "announce" that i'm taking
a short break from taping for now. I have done too many trades lately and
not only is it a strain on my wallet but on my time too.

If you need BFF shows, visit the BFF Trading Station and i'm sure you'll
find some people who are really nice and more than willing to trade with you.

Hey Armchair Folk.

I just made an MP3 of Ben Folds Five's cover of Jimi Hendrix's Crosstown
Traffic featuring Mr. Robert Sledge on Lead Vocals. Enjoy. And DO check out my
bootlist while you're there.

Well first of all, let me overally extend my gratitude for your jackass
comments, HndOfChaos. Unlike some fellow BF5 fans, who were kind enough to not
rip on me for my not knowing the title of "Pyser," you ceased to be a real
jerk. But I will try to help answer one of your questions now. But watch how I
answer it in a, "non-egotistical, kind, and enlightening" manner. Maybe you
should take notes, Hnd. You wrote:
<<PYSER PART II: Finally bought the ARD compilation with the KCRW with strings
recording of Dr. P, and I want to know: What's that sound? Some squeaking,
whistling thing during the middle of the song? Someone's going "Ugh!" and then
there's this whistle-type sound...an unknown use of the me-low-dica,
perhaps?>>
Here's my insight on that sound. When they played the song at the Beck/Lennon
show, Ben was hitting his microphone on the piano strings. It produced a sound
very much like the squeaking noise heard on part of the song right before (I
think) the Pulp Fiction-esque piano solo. That is, if that's what you are
talking about.

Notes:
A very good concert. One of the best I have been too. The crowd was
well-mannered and behaved especially compared to the many other shows I
have been to this tour. (ex.- no moshing) Also, there were many cool people
and fans, from both the Magical Armchair and Rockford Files lists as well
as from the #BenFoldsFive irc channel on the undernet, there that I met
which made it even more fun. Sonny, Ginger, Scott, etc. you all are the
coolest. By the way Sonny, you need to work on your jump shot you came a
little short of getting your black t-shirt over to Darren, but it was still
cool. The opening band, Snuzz, played very well...and NO! that was not Ben
playing bass...that was Ben's little brother Chuck. As for BFF, they played
awesome. The show will be always one that I will remember, and I enjoyed
meeting alot of you. Anyways, I must be off. It was nice meeting all of you
that I met, and the concert will be one that will be in my memories for a
long time to come.

Toodles,
Sanders

Subject: Hard Rock Live - I was there

(I'm posting this again because it seems it was in one of the "lost" issues,
1064 or 1065)

What a way to close out this tour! After somewhat disappointing shows at
the Y100 FEZtival, Giants Stadium, and Jones Beach, I was itching for just
one more small venue show before the next tour. So, even though I couldn't
get a ticket, I showed up at Sony Music studios tonight and tried to get in.
The guys there were very nice, and had no problem with letting me in! So,
since I was there early, I got a good spot in line, and managed to score a
seat on the "bleachers" to the right of the stage--as close as possible to
Robert. I had the good fortune of meeting Lindsay there, another
former-regular, recent-lurker on the Armchair. So we ended up sitting right
next to the stage, in prime location.

Sony Studios was a cool place, I'm guessing there were maybe 350 people
there, at most. It was all seating, but that was fine--we had no problem
with dancing in our seats. The sound quality was AMAZING, which was no
surprise, really, but it far surpassed any other show I've seen BFF play so
far. The set was pretty stock, but there were some great extras that you
don't get to see every day:

- - Before they played Emaline, Ben said it's likely that it will show up on
the new album. (Don't ask me why, I'm perfectly happy with the NBP
version.)

- - Although it wasn't on the setlist (of which I managed to get a copy),
there were enough chants of "Evaporated!" when Robert got out the string
bass that Ben decided to go along and do it. He was asking Rob and Darren,
"Well? Brick? Evaporated?" Who has to choose? They played both!

- - Some very original person (heavy sarcasm) called for Free Bird. So Rob
played the first few bars of "Sweet Home Alabama," bowed on the upright.

- - There was a problem with the lighting during Brick and OAD, so BFF were
informed that they'd have to play them again. So instead of playing Brick
the same again, Ben said that there were "different versions of the song."
They played up through the first chorus at an uptempo honky-tonk style...it
was great! It will probably be cut from the TV version, but I'm hoping
someone managed to tape it (Please let me know if you did!)

- - After the fast version of Brick, they played the regular version again,
and Ben said, "You all have to scream like crazy for the first chord. Then
get really quiet--you'll sound like a Japanese crowd." Watch for it on the
TV show.

- - When Ben went to throw his stool during Philosophy, it came apart (again!
He really should get some better ones!) So he ended up throwing it, metal
end first, into the keys. Ouch. Then he got another one and threw that one
too.

So, it was a great show. I'm so happy I was able to go, because it really
was a great experience. A few more things: The band didn't come out to
the bus until about 90 minutes or so after the show. Lindsay and I and two
guys were the only ones waiting around any more. Darren said to expect the
new album in January 1999. Robert was playing Goldeneye on Nintendo 64 on
the bus with Trey.

The band has a day off on Saturday; they'll be in Chapel Hill to rest. The
Atlanta show should be killer! I hope to see a review!

Your favorite setlist and review guy,

Leigh
