BINARIES
Another reminder: Please do not post binary files (JPEGs, etc) to the
Armchair. They are generally unreadable (because the list server strips
out the header information that is necessary for most mail readers to
decode them), and inflate the digest to a huge size. Last week's binary
post ran that issue to 89k (the usual maximum is 20k) and caused the
issue to bounce from about 50 subscribers' e-mail accounts that could
not handle a message that large.
If you wish to share a picture with the listmembership, please either
(a) post a URL where the picture can be seen, or (b) offer to e-mail the

haha, perfect. especially considering the recent interview everyone is
talking about.

in any case, a supergrass cover would be cool. it's not too common and
they are pretty good live, so i respect 'em.

I was just as annoyed as everyone else by this "asshole" post form the other
night. I can say this....I spoke to Robert yesterday..actually...quite by
accident. He had just gotten back from Europe and was PRETTY damn tired...But
he was SWEET as anyone I've ever spoken to. I had never met him before so this
was my first experience with any of the guys...I asked about hooking up with
him and the guys in the near future and he was TOTALLY cool about it. He said
they REALLY do need down-time because they've been touring almost non-stop for
2 years now. Just to clarify. SONY IS NOT MAKING THEM DO THIS. They WANT this
band to have staying power. They want longevity. His exact words, as I recall
were "success beyond the album" or something along those lines. When I asked
him to explain that he just said he didn't want this to be "the" album and
that's all. I don't know what kind of experiences other people have had...But
this is pretty damn recent...YESTERDAY and at a point where he SHOULD be at
his nastiest. He JUST got back from Europe and is soon leaving for Australia.
He just wanted to get some rest. But he stayed on the phone and was a COMPLETE
gentleman. I didn't even realize it was him until after a minute or so..he
said "I play bass with the band". he was so modest about the whole thing. He
told me how much he likes meeting the fans. "I feel like I've met everyone
who's bought the album. it's just really cool to get to know the fans."
Anyway...I AM sorry about the length..but before we tarnish people's
reputations...we REALLY should think about it more....The internet is the
internet. It's a great tool but it's also a stage for all kinds of freaks.
This North Carolina guy might've been a bit loopy on bus fumes. Just my 26
cents.

Subject: ATTN: Ben Folds Five Fan Club!

To the faithful BFF fans from the MA and RF-

Hello. It is weird to see that a band with such a devoted and slightly
religious following like our boys does not have a fan club. Well that
will soon change. Behind the leadership of Erik Sorenson, he and myself
among others will be starting the Ben Folds Five Fan Club.

After discussions with the band and their management, the Fan Club is
finally expected to get it's feet off the ground, but nothing will work
without the support of the fans. Early on, the Fan Club will start up in
a fairly limited capacity. Possibly a quarterly 'zine for starters with
expectations for major growth. The goal is to at sometime hold fan club
only concerts and maybe release fan club only material! The possiblities
are endless, but only if we have the support of the fans. All the
management, if you will, of the fan club are devoted fans of BFF...but we
can only provide you with so much information. Eric and I are taking
applications from people who wish to contribute to this effort, we would
especially appreciate the support of the administrators of both lists.
That means you, Frank and Erik! When applying please list your areas of
expertise and what you think you could contribute to the fan club.
Please do not flood the following response address with applications to
join, only to help. We will be allowing members soon...but first we are
still setting up the foundation.

Please stay tuned for further updates, there will be a webpage ready soon
with a Fan Club FAQ, and more information on the capacity of the fan
club. The hope is that through a fan club that the fans will be more
aware of the comings and goings of the band, with the fan club acting as
the middle man to bring you the exclusive information straight from the
band!

Please send all applications, and inquiries about help to...

BFFFanClub@juno.com

Thank you for listening,

Erik Sorenson, President

Subject: JK Fett's chat with Toadyrage

After reading JKFett's conversation with Toadyrage, and doing some
thinking about it and conversing with friends who also know the guys, I
thought I'd post my observations.

I've spent enough time with Ben, Darren and Robert to get to know how they
feel about their fans, and I can tell you they still enjoy meeting people
who like the band. We've talked and joked about some of the people they've
met and whom I'm familiar with and they always seem to get a kick out of
meeting people. It's true that Ben may be a bit more preoccupied with the
business of the band these days, but it hasn't diminished his friendliness
and openness toward folks, both in Chapel Hill and on the road. People
stop them on the street and they are friendly to everyone. And I have it
on good authority that the thing about having a bodyguard is a fabrication.

As for rumors of moving away from Chapel Hill, they've hardly spent much
time there in the past two years. (When Ben and Kate were together, there
were rumors that Ben would move to Los Angeles, but that chapter's been
writ.) It's their home, and as far as I know, they plan on staying. The
only situation where they might be put-off-ish against fans in Chapel Hill
is when they seek out their homes and knock on their doors uninvited. (You
wouldn't like it either.)

I don't know what Toadyrage's motivations are, but they sure seem like
he's trying to tell people that he knows what the guys are thinking. Or
perhaps he's a musician who hasn't made it big yet and resents those from
Chapel Hill who have. His comments about the Zippers are likewise out of
line. And you have to consider it's a chat between two strangers at 3AM
via the anonymity of a computer connection. If Toadyrage really cared
about dissing the band, he'd join the Armchair and do it himself (or
perhaps spew on the newsgroup, which would be preferable to doing it
here).

Besides, JK, remember that the Hardback Cafe closed down (replaced not by
Office Town but by the Lizard and Snake, a pretty cool place in itself),
so it must be an old Yellow Pages ad he's sending.

This may sound silly, but I have a live tape (from radio) from the
Roskilde festival, and since I'm fairly new to BFF I'm not quite familiar
with their songs/song titles. Could someone please help me out with these
three:

1. The radio dj refers to a song as "If it makes you happy" (?)

2. They sing "down from day one" (referred to as "Down from day one" ?)

3. They're doing some basketball rap (referred to as "Basket" ?)

Thanks!!

Okay, I've been thinking about this for a while, & I think BFF would do a
GREAT cover of The Drew Carey show theme. Seriously. It'd rock!!!

During all that careful consideration, I kinda came to a realisation that
even though BFF have some really really sad songs which are really
heartbreaking, none of them are really BLACK. Having BFF cover a song which
just has that feel to it, example Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun COULD be
fantastic, but it would add a completely different feel to the song (& yes,
I do realise that the whole guitar thing makes a difference).

just a thought, they don't come that often so I decided to share :)

hi guys,
I'm a rather new bff fan. I've been listening to them for a few months,
and I am absolutely obsessed. I've got a question though... I'm a bit
confused with the discussion about WAEA. I have the cd, but where is the
hidden track? I have some talking on the album, but I don't think that I have
the hidden track. oh, and one more question... does anyone know where I could
get the ska remix of kate? thanks again!

To answer your question about Kate, he wrote "Kate" before he divorced her...
actually, before he married her! And he doesn't have any kids, although I
used to think Dean and Scotty(from the Whatever footnotes) were his kids, now
I know they're his parents.

Okay, I'm actually getting sick of the Modern Rock Live since I only have the
end half of Eddie Walker on, about 30 minutes of interviewing, and One Angry
Dwarf... besides I have it on two tapes, so i can send someone one. If
anybody wants it, it's free(if you don't mind the a couple Spice Girls songs
before the interview that my cousin taped). If you want it, e-mail me,
personally.

What about covering "Fame" ?? You know, "I wanna live forever." Am I half-
kidding? I don't know.

My friend subscribes to one of those teen magazines, I think it's called Swirl
or something...Twist...I don't know...Anyway, they have a piece that said
"What did you think when you first saw your video on MTV?" and Ben Folds is in
there. I don't have the magazine, so I'm not quoting exactly, but he said
something like "we were played right after fiona apple, and i thought, 'i
don't look as good as she does; i looked more like the guy down the street.' "
Again, if no one has this magazine to quote it exactly (I doubt anyone does,
really), then I'll get my friend to tell meexactly what it says when she gets
back from Texas. Yeah, and in response to that same question, Stephan Jenkins
from 3eb said "It's like warm jam and toast for breakfast." Whatever that
means. :)

Hey, I went to Ocean City, NJ yesterday, and I had such a kick-ass music-
shopping day! I found some things (all Radiohead & 3eb) in the Surf Mall that
I hadn't seen...but then I went in this store called Pandemonium that has CD's
in it. They have a big bootleg collection, as well as a lot of CD imports.
Ben Folds Five fall into both of those categories! Most of the imports were
arouns $25, but I didn't have enough with me, but I did buy two tape bootlegs.
(My first ones, actually) One of Radiohead, and one of Ben Folds Five. I
haven't listened to it yet, but here's what's on it:

7th House, Pontiac Michigan LIVE 1/30/96
Best Imitation Of Myself
Jackson Cannery
The Last Polka
Where's Summer B?
One Angry Dwarf
Uncle Walter
Steven's Last Night
Julianne
Retarted (aka Bad Idea)
Video Killed The Radio Star
Underground
Sports & Wine
Elvin Bishop
SFTD
Satan is my Master
Philosophy
Filler: early demos
Emaline
Cool Whip
Evaporated
Eddie Walker This Is Your Life
Protection
SFTD
Underground

pretty cool, right? only $10 each, 3 for $25! go down there NOW!

Bye,

Anyway, I finally heard the original, Flaming Lips, version of "She Don't
Use Jelly" and noticed that they use the same type of guitar effect that
Built to Spill use on the original "Twin Falls." And BFF covered both
songs. Coincidence or not. You tell me.

And how about a cover of "No One Is To Blame" by Howard Jones.
