WARNING ON OFF-TOPIC MESSAGES
I hate to have to be list-mom again, but consider this a warning that
those who post off-topic messages may be removed from the Armchair. I
consider much of the recent discussion on racial matters to be off-topic,
particularly the personal insults, and the discussion is largely
inappropriate. Like your mom, my judgment may appear to be arbitrary but
in order to keep an all-out fight from breaking out, some of you are going
to have to go to your room.

Subject: Emerson, Lake and Palmer/Ben Folds Five?
This is somewhat Ben Folds Five related so don't bite my head off, k? :)
I don't know how many people have actually heard of these people but I suppose
they were pretty big back in the 70's. Anyway, my friend Eileen and I won some
free tickets off the radio yesterday (95.9 the RAT) to see them open for Deep
Purple tonight. Now, we got there a bit late, missing Dream Theater but just
in time to see them set up for ELP. So we're sitting there in our awesome lawn
seats (woo!) and ELP comes out. Ok, so they may be old-ish rock stars who are
dressed in funky shiny clothes, but when Keith Emerson got by his keyboards, I
looked at what the other people were playing. Sure enough, Greg Lake was on
bass and the Palmer dude was on drums (who, by the way, was INCREDIBLE!).
Then, Emerson played this whole awesome song on his grand piano (sound
familiar to anyone else?) and I was completely thinking of Ben Folds Five.
Granted, these people sound NOTHING like BF5, *but* the fact that it was a
trio with a bass player, a drummer and a pianist/keyboard player made it all
groovy. :) They did rock the house, as well as Deep Purple. (I can't get that
"Smoke on the Water" song out of my head!) But I just thought it was cool and
I had to share it with you all. Sorry for taking up all your *precious* space.
Please don't kill me, there was Bentent in here, I swear there was.... :)
Tomorrow night: Semisonic (woo hoo!), Soul Asylum, Matchbox 20. And no, I'm
not a big Matchbox 20 fan so there.
See ya around amigos!

Chuck Folds' "light bulb in cyberspace" joke was great. I just read the
interview with him on "The Shrubbery" at
<A HREF=http://www.theshrubbery.prohosting.com/0898/chuck.html</A> which
I highly recommend!!! He mentions these Nashville A&R guys a few years
ago talking about how Ben isn't a good songwriter. This reminded me of a
joke in December's(?) MOJO:
Question: What do you call 50 dead A&R men?
Answer: A good start.
ALSO (for Chuck)
Question: What do you call someone who hangs out with musicians?
Answer: A bass player.
Here's the CLASSIC- all music fans should know this one:
Question: What do you call a drummer whose girlfriend just broke up with
him?
Answer: Homeless.
They didn't mention this one in MOJO, but it's a standard:
A kid goes up to his mother and says, "Mom, I want to be a musician when
I grow up." The mother replies, "Honey, you can't do both."
BTW- Chuck- you and Ben both "nearing middle-aged"? Talk to me in ten
years, baby!

Hey
Ben actually mentioned Bette Middler covering Boxing in the first Sydney
Concert. And he said there was nothing wrong with that.
Thats about all I have to say.

Ugh, are you serious. Chairers, if this happens, we need to protest or
revolt or something. Bette Midler?? Doesn't she work at Jack in the Box
or something?

I haven't seen them on Pop-Up Video and I was wondering, what other videos are
played with the BF5 "episode"? I just want to know what to look out for, so
maybe I can get it recorded.
So, e-mail me if you know what other videos are played with BF5's "Brick" in
Pop-Up Video.
Thanks for the help!

Wow, Bette Midler's going to cover "Boxing" for an album to be released on
Sept. 15 called "Bathhouse Betty".
Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I don't really read the list

Hey everyone!
Okay, I'm just wasting my day away here watching MTV and Carson Daly was
interviewing Robert Bradley's Blackwater Suprise when they started talking
about a "Hempilation" or something like that. (I was only half listening) But
anyway, they mentioned that BFF was also on the CD. Anyone care to enlighten
me about what this is? What song is on the CD? Thanks!
