Russell,
Try a band called "Fluid Ounces". You can purchase the CD at
www.spongebath.net
And I think a band formerly called "The Frogs" have a number of piano based
songs that sound much like BF5 - their first CD was called "Yeah Yeah Yeah".
You can buy it at www.mightyhead.com. They have since changed their name to
"Mightyhead". Their 2nd CD (released under the name "Mightyhead") doesn't
sound as much like BF5, but it still good stuff.
Your Pal,
Chris Mal

I was in this used cd store today pouring over a large number of used cds when
I found this like promotional cd called "Buy it Next" or something like
that...I think it was for shoes, specifically sneakers. Anyways, it's from
1995 and the first track is "Underground" by our beloved BFF, plus there's a
really neat picture of them inside. Oh yeah....I checked out the interview in
VMag and it was pretty neat...Ben was talking about some movie about a bear or
something like that...I dunno. So yeah, that's my bentent for now :)

Subject: Favourite Song
Hey Everyone
So... we were asked what our favourite songs are. What a decision.
I'd have to choose Song For the Dumped and Selfless, Cold, and Composed.
I had this boyfriend, and I really liked him, and then (surprise surprise) he
dumped me.
On one hand, I hated his pathetic little guts. SFTD relieved a lot of stress
with that. Just take a little SFTD, add one angry person and a pillow, turn
up to highest volume, strike pillow extremely hard, scream along with the
song, serve hot, enjoy!
But of course, on the other hand, I desperately wanted him back. I felt like
for the longest time when we were together that he didn't like me. So
whenever I heard S,C & C (You can tell I made that abbreviation up!) I always
wailed out the bridge (I think it's the bridge... I'm not exactly a musical
genius) "Just one sign that would show me that you gave a shit......". Sigh.
And, of course, Selfless, Cold, and Composed is a beautiful song.
So those are my reasons for enjoying those songs.
Aiight G-funk, I's be outta here.
Keep it real,
Ben's Ho
P.S. I also enjoy the deeply touching "For Those of Ya'll Who Wear Fanny
Packs". Those lyrics make me break down and cry. Oh, so beautiful.

Subject: Really, Really Bad Idea
I always thought the end line on "Bad Idea" was Ben (and either
Darren or Robert) saying something like..."I'm not gonna say anything
that might..." then getting cut-off, and of course the words to
finish that phrase would be "Offend anyone" (or something to that
extent). And i always assumed it was in reference to them using the
term "retarded" repeatedly... That's just my two cents...

This site called wall of sound is taking a poll for the best album of
the 90's.........and if you don't know who to vote for you shouldn't
even be on this list. I voted for all three BF5 albums and a few other
artists that I thought were deserving of the role of best album of the
90's. Here is the URL:

YO adriane, (I know, you probably get that all the time...sorry, had to do
it). Personally, I don't hear the connection between BF5 and ELO, although I
am a big ELO fan ( and watch out how you refer to "old groups;" I was a
teenager when they came out ). If you like ELO, though, you might also want
to check out The Traveling Wilburys, a supergroup comprised of Jeff Lynne
(former lead singer for ELO), George Harrison (I hope I don't have to point
out the reference here), Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and the great late Roy
Orbison. To me, BF5 are a cross between the Beatles, early Billy Joel, and
Loudon Wainwright III. In short, they're the best thing that's happened to
music since the Beatles, after Crowded House of course (my humble opinion).

Upon further inspection of the promotional cd I purchased, "Underground" is an
edited version, without the "I was never cool in school..." part. I also
picked up a cd from Morning Becomes Eclectic with Rufus Wainwright, it's
pretty damn cool.

well as we all know, no band could ever even hope to sound as fantastic as
bff, but some bands with similar music are fluid ounces and five for
fighting...

Speaking of the Uncle Walter vid...I actually saw it last week on the late
night Wedge, believe it or not. I just happened to be flipping around, and
I was lucky enough to catch it from the beginning. Pretty cool vid, I must
say. After the vid, Sook Yin came back and talked a bit about 'fear of
pop'. She didn't say anything we didn't already know. About the
Spotlight...I'll give it a shot, but I'm very, very pessimistic about it
working. Much doesn't seem to be too interested in playing anything
targeted at an audience over 13. And if you think it's bad now, just wait
until the new cable channel comes in....

Someone has probly already stated this, but I was flipping through my latest
CMJ and reading the letters sent in when this caught my eye in a letter about
how some guy got in trouble for having a magazine with the word "pussy" in
it, anyways he said "I don't know about you, but I can't stand Ben Folds Five"
the strange thing is that the guys name is Scotty. I wonder if it is some
joke...
