Yeah! Now there's two good bands on the Sabrina soundtrack, one of whom
is you-know-who, the other PHANTOM PLANET! These guys are young, like a
few years out of high school, but their album is just unbelievable, in
my opinion. For a while I've been meaning to bring up this band -- I
definitely recommend it for anyone who is a fan of the vocal stylings of
one Mr. Ben Folds; there's a lot of similarities in the manner in which
the lead singer of PP sings -- very real-
sounding, you know? Their album is called Phantom Planet Is Missing.
And hey, the song that best shows the vocal stylings resemblance, Don't
Get Down, is also on the soundtrack! That rocks. :) I'm still not
buying the soundtrack; there's no reason to since I have Kate and
DGD...but there's a BF5-related suggestion that doesn't involve a piano!
PP sounds like a mix between the Cardigans & Ben Folds Five...Oh, I just
remembered that they're BF5 fans!

It seems like the majority on this list favor Evaporated when it comes
to the slower songs. Personally, I love Smoke. Although I love
Evaporated, Smoke hits me a lot harder...anyone agree? Oh, and a
question -- at the very end of OAD, right before "I like it," I hear a
word -- what is it? You can e-mail me that personally if you know, so
no one gets pissed off. :)

Also, since nothing exactly new is happening yet (which I'm sure will
change with the release of Fear Of Pop, whenever that happens to be), I
just thought I'd share that I didn't have the same misconception about
the band's name when I first heard it (thanks to my older sister soon
after S/T was released)...Usually people think that it's a five-piece
band with Ben Folds as the frontman, but I thought it was using "Folds"
as verb...You know as in "Ben folds five pieces of
paper" or something like that...but of course that was -before- I was,
you know, enlightened...

Also, now the word pliable is reminding me of BF5...I was looking at a
random paper and it said "pliable: Bends, Folds" ....anyway, I see now
just how pointless this post really was... :)

Lauren

The only good non-video related MTV show ever is SIFL AND OLLY! Screw
Southpark! Sifl and Olly are funnier, and they come on every night! Finally
MTV recognizes true talent - and of course they are stuck at 11:30...

Ok, Bentent - Fav member..uh...BEN - simply cause he was the only one sober
enough to talk to me after their Atlanta show, and he's a damn good pianist I
hear....even better than Fiona, contrary to the belief of the idiot who wrote
that KEYBOARD magazine review...
Ok really i dont grudge Robert for bein toasted - he'd just finished a
looooong ass tour and he deserved it....
Ok - cheers for all you European and Aussie folk on the chair

Ben used to live in Nashville as a session player - mostly drums I think. I
suppose thats how he met Fleming and John - they are all good friends now -I
saw Fleming rockin to Ben at a show in Nashville last year. Fleming and John
are pretty popular out here in Middle Tennessee.

Ben is good friend with Fleming and John. John did string arrangements on
WEAEA. Ben has drummed for them before, and obviously did it again. So
yeah, that's that.

Speaking of Johns...don't you hate it when people create new websites and
blatantly steal from other peoples' websites without asking permission?
Must feel weird to go somewhere and see *your* discography on another
person's page. I'm not one to name names, but I think you know who you
are.

Yes, that was me in the Philly paper. No, I didn't know about it. I'm
not the flake that article makes me out to be. I do have a life beyond
Old Navy and Robert Sledge. :P

Paul! When the hell did you join this list?!

Angry Spring Break Beach Bunnies, 12 Angry Truckers, 12 Angry Grannies,
etc., 12AV was basically a rare way to see some legit indie stuff on
MTV. Let me remind you that "Bachelorette" by Bjork, "Brown Paper Bag"
by Roni Size, and "Rapper's Delight" by Def Squad (realize that these
three rappers had made hardly a dent on the scene unless you count Erick
Sermon's time with EPMD a few years back), all videos that probably
wouldn't have gotten playing time at all on MTV, won their respective
weeks of 12AV and got their spot in the rotation. To say that 12AV picks
were all fluff is a bit incorrect. I admit that it seemed that way as
the purpose of the show, which was to show videos that wouldn't
ordinarily make it onto the playlist, became muddier and the quality
 began to decline.

For a while at the end of 1997 and early 1998, 12AV was one of the best
reasons to watch MTV. There were great videos ("Sexy Boy" by Air, which
I only saw on 120 Minutes once and also on 12AV) that never got play
 time that 12AV showed.

If you also noticed, they really started playing horible stuff like hanson,
maddona, and celine dion and decided to abandon the people and growth in new
music areas, Sad to say before 1998 it was a really good show but then it
screwed itself off the air.

Yo Armchair,
Regarding Ben's appearance on the Fleming & John CD (Delusions Of
Grandeur), very nice album. But you won't hear a lick of Ben influence.
Although F&J hail from the (relatively) same area in NC as the Five.
Like I said, still worth checking out.
Another album for you die-hards: Barry Black, self-titled. Came out in
1996, I believe... Ben also plays drums and a little piano on it.
Largely instrumental, sounds nothing like BF5, not my cup of tea but you
never know 'til you tried it yourself...
Finally, a brand-new thing you need to check out: a various artists
compilation, The Garden Place - Songs By Our Friends. NC bands
contributing unreleased songs to benefit a local rape crisis center and
victim shelter. Worthy cause, and some great music: Squirrel Nut Zippers
and the brilliant Whiskeytown (a GREAT song, "Me & My Ticket") among
others. And lo and behold, there's a brand-new track from Darren Jesse
of Ben Folds Five!!! Worth checking just for curiousity's sake, Darren
sounds a bit like the old (pre-Saturday Night Fever) Bee Gees, coupled
with the Raspberries and Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd. Nice stuff.
Anyway, the compilation's on a tiny label called Yep Roc Records. So
don't hit BestBuy or CDNow or some other evil corporate store trying to
find out. Go to your local independent music store and investigate.
Hope all this info didn't make your head explode... BTW, Fear Of Pop
should be out in mid-October. I'm getting an advance CD from Sony in a
few days so I'll let you kids know how it sounds...

Hey armchair!

Yesterday I heard Bette Midlers version of "Boxing" -kind of
cheezed up, and her stuttering vocalisms dont accurately capture the pain
of that song-yes, ben does it beter. What Bette brings to it that I like
is that I could totally picture it in a glossy hollywood movie or
Broadway play, and that would be cool. It was still a gorgeous song,
too, not like a diane warren penned ballad. It was weird hearing it.
Could you imagine if theres a BFF comp in maybe 10 years from now?

New band (olde boston band) Jack Drag have just released their
major label debut (good shit) and its funny, because Jack Dragonetti, the
front man, has the same kind of face as Robert. A very Robert vibe
coming from him. The songs Ive heard off the album are so good, so
melodic and great noise!

(yo, my comps been out-ive just read all my summer armchairs) But
my big fourteen year old crush, Lance, the adorable namedropper who
worked @ Cool Beans, he has the same bday as Ben! Weird.

Other good music- the Dream With The Fishies soundtrack (anyone
else adore this film?) Rufus Wainwright(think hes going to hit boston
anytime soon?) and David Garza, too.
~Elisabeth
JSBX new album (out on my bday!) any good? anyone know?
Lastly, my friend Caitlin said that if some parallel world, if M doughty
from soul coughing and beck were both gay, wouldnt they make the
awesomest couple? Think about it....white men who rap.=)

Fleming McWilliams and John Mark Painter are good friends of Ben's. On one or
two of the bootlegs I have, he even thanks them for coming out and opening(?)
for BFF. Fleming sings all of their songs on this album, and I personally
have to endorse it very highly. I have probably just about worn my Delusions
of Grandeur disc out, though I have to admit that they don't sound anything
like BFF. Still, their lyrics are fantastic, the music both rocks and soothes
alternately, and Fleming has a beautiful voice. Ben doesn't sing, and I think
he only plays drums on about two songs, but hey, it's still Ben Folds.

don't you think he is going to post it when he finds out? I mean Duh.
Well you might say that Frank might find out from the armchair. And
thats fine and dandy, but listen when somebody finds out the first
thing they are going to do is post. I am almost positive about it.
So what is the point in asking cause if you haven't heard anything
about it yet it prolly isn't coming out yet ok ok. Just had to get
that cleared up. Anyways last armchair I read something about Ben
playing with Fleming and John. Duh again. Read the damn faq. I
think I have know about that for a year or something.
Ok my bitching is complete..sorry about all that I kinda had a bad

Actually, I'd prefer if you'd send your replies directly to the poster,
who could then tabulate them and post a summary.

Due to the huge membership of the Armchair, it's not really suitable
to poll everyone on their favorite song/member/other band/lipgloss

This sort of thing is better done on the newsgroup where people can
easily choose to read or not to read individual articles.

Thanks.
