OK kiddies, it's time (finally) for the full out press to begin. We just
got a copy of the May 1999 issue of CMJ New Music Monthly - with a
curious illustration of the FIVE on the cover as superheroes. Headline:
"BEN FOLDS FIVE making the universe safe for pop". ARMY is track one on
the cd included within the mag. Tom Maxwell, of Squirrel Nut Zippers
fame, who plays horn on TUBORM, is responsible for the article: "A Brick
Through the Window - Ben Folds Five." It's really good, offering insight
into the recording process and the dynamics of the new album, even
though Darren's name is misspelled throughout.
Some quotable quotes:
Ben: "WHATEVER is better than I gave it credit for. We were convinced
that it was our worst album."
Robert: "We weren't perceived as a sell-out after BRICK because people
could see we were kind of sabotaging ourselves from becoming a big pop
band."
Great pics of the boys lookin' all tweedy (in hats!) on the streets of
NY.
This is it! Finally! Something new to read, look at, and talk about!
I've been listening to the new album a lot in the past week or so, and
it's a real emotional ride. I don't want to say anything specific until
everyone else has had a chance to hear it. One thing, though - DON'T
CHANGE YOUR PLANS (which is available somewhere on RealAudio, n'est-ce
pas?) is just incredibly beautiful. It sticks in your mind and won't let
go.

ALSO - if you can find one, there is an awesome interview disc, "Truth &
Rumors with Ben Folds Five," which was recorded in February at Sony
Music Studios in NY. The 36 minute cd includes several complete music
tracks from TUBORM interspersed with a question & answer session with
the guys. One major point of illumination - the band was unaware of the
existence of the REAL mountaineer Reinhold Messner until this interview.
They had no idea that he really existed. Go buddy-up to record store &
radio folks who might be able to snag a copy from Sony. It's well worth
it.

I think this is the right date....
Anybody have this show from Hammerstein Ballroom, NYC last year? I had a
trade set up and then it kind of fell through and I haven't heard from the
guy in ages. Unfortunately I've already spun the show we were going to
trade for but that's ok, maybe I can use it elsewhere.
Anyway, I"m looking for this Hammerstein show, if any of you kind people
have it and are interested in trading either for a show or for blanks,
whatever's easier for you, please email me privately.
thanks so much.
take care,
Cat

Hey I'm new to the whole concert thing and I was wondering if anyone
knows if they will be doing a show in St. Louis, MO. If not does anyone
know if they might on a second tour around or if they have in the past?
I'm just wondering because I don't want to take all the time and money
to go to the show in Chicago and then have them come here. Any help
would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Adelaide Advertiser confirmed TUBORM's release date to be the 19th of April, and I think it's a pretty reliable source. Greeeat...that's, like, the day I go back to school after my two-week break. Guess I'll be getting up early that day!
Is anyone else wondering how they're going to rush out and buy the Army single when it's released on Monday, seeing as it's a public holiday and music shops aren't likely to be open?

1. BF5 - cartoon cover of CMJ magazine, including an article with cool
pictures, Army on the sampler, and a full page album ad; check it out,
very cool.

2. Anyone have any extra tickets for either BF5 show in Philly? Please
let me know.  Thanks.
