On the eve (at least in some parts of the world) of the TUBORM release, I
saw it appropriate to record my first single from the new album. Since
Army was the first official single, I took heed and followed in line.

You can download a streaming version here:

has anyone else ordered their cd/video pack through cd now? i have a horrible
feeling that they're going to pull the ol' "backorder" trick on me. i'm
keeping my fingers crossed.

michigan joe says that the babydoll t's aren't onesizefitsall (hm). i still
think they sent me some kind of freak-o tee... the thing won't even fit my 9
year old brother! (i made him try it on. he wasn't amused.) i exchanged it
anyway, so i'm going to stop griping about it. (you're welcome).

who is the person arranging the chicago get-together? are there any definite
plans? i want to go, but i'm driving up from memphis and know nothing
(NOTHING) about chicago.. the place where i'm staying is about two feet away
from park west so i'm not planning on getting too far away from there.

still pining for the underground cd -
(y'know, joe schanderson, when i saw that email in my box from you, i was
SURE it was a kind offer of an underground picture cd. sigh.)

Hey thanks to Will Brady for posting that TFI army mp3. I'm listening to it
as I type. Wow?! Did you hear that high note that the trumpet player was
screaming out at the end?! Incredible. Sorry, little things like that
always impress me. Being a musician, I like to listen for all the little
subtleties. Everyone should download this one. Definetly worthy of adding
to you collection of BFF mp3's. That's all for now.

Subject: URI Show Review

First a warning...This review contains many details and thus many spoilers!

Also, if you made a tape of this show, please E-mail me! I've got a
collection of other shows on audio and video, so we may be able to work out
a trade. Now, to the review...

Just got back from my fifth Ben Folds Five show and I have to say that Ben,
Robert, and Darren have topped themselves again. This is probably the
tightest that I've seen them. I'd go so far as to say that it's one of the
best shows that I've seen them do. The guys were cracking jokes and just
plain having fun. There was definitely a great vibe onstage tonight.
 Here's the setlist:

Don't Change Your Plans (featuring John Mark-Painter on fugelhorn)
Battle of Who Could Care Less
Philosophy
Mess
Steven's Last Night in Town
Magic
Hospital Song
Army
Underground
Your Redneck Past
Jane
Alice Childress (this was requested by people in the audience -> however,
I'm not sure whether they were planning to play it anyway...)
Narcolepsy
One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces

- -- ENCORE --
Lullabye
Song for the Dumped

As you can see, the set list is similar to the others from this first leg
of the tour. And there were plenty of highlights! Ben got a gift from
somebody in the audience. It was this bug bubble blower. This prompted a
little chat between Robert and Ben about bubble blowing and magic bubbles.
During "Steven's Last Night in Town," Robert made sweet, sweet love to his
amplifiers while later in the song Ben did a James Brown homage as Robert
draped a towel cape over him.

The "Song for the Dumped" finale was crazy nuts. The quote of the night
had to be Ben screaming, "Have you seen a six-foot slender man make love to
75 pounds of Turkish steel?" After which, Darren beat the crap out of his
gong! By the end of the song, the gong was pretty much dead. It was
knocked off of its hanger! Awesome stuff. Robert also had a great bass
solo as well as a solo using that dome-like theremin thing. And Ben went
insane screaming between two different microphones on center stage.

Of course, the performances were top-notch. I was very impressed by the
vocals. The vocal "horns" in "Army" especially worked well giving Robert
and Darren another moment to shine. There was even some added harmony by
Robert during the bridge of "Your Redneck Past." Other great harmony
moments included "Underground," "Don't Change Your Plans" and "Narcolepsy."

The new instruments were definitely an added bonus. I'm so glad they
brought in timpanis for "Magic." I believe there was a triangle near
Darren's kit too and a pot to bang on for "Your Redneck Past." Ya know, I
never realized the bass on "Mess" was done on a synth! BTW, what kind of
synths are those? Is one of them a Moog?

I'm telling ya the energy was up during the show. They were totally "on"
tonight. You can really tell the guys are enjoying playing their new
songs. The "cool move" of the night belongs to Darren. During
"Philosophy," Darren flipped up a drumstick in the air in such a way that
it landed in his hand in time to hit the next beat. I'm not sure if the
description does it justice, but man, it was one of those moments where I
did a Keanu Reeves and said, "Whoa!"

Ben's intros to some of the songs provided a little insight into the nature
of this album. There is a sort of story running through the songs with
Reinhold Messner as the main character. He even made up this story of how
Steven's Last Night in Town could fit into the new album. You see,
according to Ben's spiel, Steven was this really annoying guy who Reinhold
went to camp with!

And for those interested in the threads the guys were wearing...Ben had
this dark blue, silk-like shirt. Robert donned a red Tweety-bird shirt.
And Darren looked quite dapper in his stylin' jacket.

Not all was perfect though. Ben flubbed a few lines during "Battle of Who
Could Care Less," but the flubs were hardly noticeable to the casual fan.
One funny thing was that he kept referring to being "in Providence" when
the show was actually in Kingston.

But those are very, very minor things. The show was more than worth the 1
1/2 hour drive from Massachusetts! When I first heard "Reinhold" and how
produced it was, I kept wondering, are they going to be able to pull off
these songs live? Sure enough, they did! It was amazing the way "Magic"
seemed to capture everybody's attention. I have a feeling that it will be
the big single from the album. Even without the strings, the song is
gorgeous!

I gotta say, it was pretty ballsy for the guys to do mostly new stuff that
the majority of the audience wasn't familiar with. I don't know how well
it clicked with the other audience members, but I can say that my friends
whom I went with (both of which hadn't heard the new stuff) were impressed.

So, it really goes without saying that if the bus stops in your town, GO
SEE THE SHOW!!! SEE THEM AS MANY TIMES AS YOU CAN!

sound rather small!

Anyway today is 26/4/99 and I can' t wait for my lunchbreak I'm going to
buy TUBORM the playable version. I've ordered the CD and bonus disk
version and I want the Video version something mad, I hope they've got

Hi BFF freaks,

just to inform everyone around here:

Even in BFF developing country GERMANY there is at least one magazine
(until today) that features Ben Folds Five.

In fact, TUBORM which is released today, is the CD of the month in
musikexpress/sounds, May issue. They gave it a totally positive review..

If anyone was interested, I could try and sum it up in English on demand

Hello again all, Alan here. (also known as Qualitease@aol.com)
Well, I went to the TLA show on the 21st, and it was very fine. I am not
going to ramble on about the show now; you guys will get the full huge
review
later. Anyway, I brought my taping equipment in with no hassle at the door.

BFF came on, opened with Don't Change Your Plans. Right at the end of the
song, a bouncer came up and took my tape deck away. I handed him a note and

a minute later I got my tape deck back. About half way through the set
another guy tryed to bust me...I promptly handed him the note, and kept
recording. This note was a copy of the band's official taping policy. If I

had not had this note, there would be no recording for me or you. So,
tapers, you can go to the Ben Folds Five Trading Station and print out a
copy
of this note. (http://members.aol.com/Qualitease/bfftrade.html)
DON'T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT!!! SPREAD THE MUSIC
Anyhoo, the tape came out nice, around a B+, and in stereo. the show is
full, fits on a 90 minute tape. I will trade to anyone interested. PLEASE
E-MAIL Qualitease@aol.com FOR A TRADE. This account is form school. I am
especially looking for shows from this tour or cd bootlegs. IF ANYONE IS
TAPING IRVING PLAZA, THEY GET FIRST COPIES FROM ME. that is going to be a
good show. here is the setlist:
1.Don't Change Your Plans (w/ John)
