Dear Armchair,
well some one said about neally being a car
crash and how it would have been wierd to be in hospital with hospital song
and all........well the day i got TUBORM i was on the way to hospital, so
just to feel like i could relate to the music a little to well after my
operation i grabbed my discman and listened to hospital song in my half dead
state and for the rest of my stay.......as i sat there thinking :)
well it seem's the new album has been acepted by its fan's which is a good
sing that its a good album, when alot of bans take a swing and its not quite
as lke (eg:smashing pumpkins) the fans are the first to kick up or at least
ssay "oh well its taking a long time to grow on me" which in a way really
means "i love the band to much just to judge them straght away so im gonna
get used to the fact that this is where band X are going and i will like it"
well maybe not that strong but i know alot of SP fans who bassiclly said
that
so just to get away from SP i will say that i love the new album- Plans-mess
and magic being the standouts for me
by the way are there any Whitlams fans here as its the Whitlams mailing list
that got me into Bff

<< the author said the crowd was bored and sleepy throughout the set, i
didn't think that was true. i think anyone from the armchair who was there
would agree that it was a good show, and a lot of the people around me who
didn't know bff aside from brick seemed to be won over halfway through the
show. in any case, i just thought anyone there might want to know how the
show was received. >>
That's pretty dissapointing that the "writer" would say that. First of all,
he shouldn't be reviewing a spring fling to begin with, unless this came out
of Tufts' paper. It's a fuckin' student activity! Not a concert! I really
enjoyed myself at the show.. BFF was great (although the outdoor setting did
make the sound a little muddy), and Sugar Hill was just enjoyable because
these two drunk girls got in a little scuffle next to me. Whee!
But, to address the soppy audience.. most kids WERE pretty drunk. I'd say
that the people who were there really enjoyed the band, but a good part of
the campus had passed out by then. :)

Hey all --
Went to the Tufts show on Saturday; highlight for me was meeting Ben and
Darren after the show. Also met Leigh (hi Leigh!) and some other faithful
fans. For those of you who were there, I was the girl with the brown hair,
WEAE t-shirt and drum head.
Perhaps I should be a bit more descriptive than that... OK, will do, but
first here is a clip from the Tufts Daily about the boys' set:
....The final musical disappointment of the afternoon was headliner Ben Folds
Five. This so-called "jam rock" band played
a dull set that was the most anticlimactic ending possible to the Spring Fling
festivities. The drunken masses were
thoroughly unmoved, milling around as Ben Folds wailed on stage. His attempts
to be emotive failed, saturating the
audience with a restless boredom.
Towards the end of the set, the band played music so quiet that one spectator
commented, "I was near the speaker and
couldn't even hear them!" The band also failed to play its only hit, "Brick."
.....
*ouch!*
I mean, certainly wasn't the best time I've seen BFF but my god, I would
never call the band live a disappointment. I think that Spring Fling is
a really bad concert to play for bands--95% of the people are there not
to hear music but to drink beer and enjoy the sunshine, so there's usually
a small crowd up front and then a big group of people in the back not paying
attention to the music whatsoever. Which is fine, but I wouldn't want to
be the person on stage.
Highlights of the set for me included: Emaline (!), Kwami's Last Night In
Town (if only because Ben decided to replace every single Steven with
the name Kwami), Your Redneck Past (which I liked even better live than on
the album). They opened with Don't Change Your Plans and played a ton
of stuff off the new album and not so much off the first one (Philosophy,
Underground). The encore was Song For The Dumped, but Ben didn't get too
into bashing the piano at the end and only stomped on the keyboards a
couple of times.
Afterwards, I waited in front of the band's bus thanks to a nice tip from
someone and was the first one there. Ben showed up first and I gave him
a baby present for the twins (a little kangaroo stuffed animal) which he
seemed to like. I realize that perhaps I am a sad obsessed person for doing
that, but I thought it was sweet and cute. I caught one of Darren's drum
lids at the Hammerstein show last year and had had Robert sign it that night.
Well, both Ben and Darren signed it on Saturday so it is now even more my
most valuable posession (tee hee). Ben almost stole my Sharpie. That's OK;
I'd give him a whole lot more than a permanent marker.
Darren seemed sorta outta it but was nice enough to sign my drum and I can't
wait to see how the pictures turned out.
Anyway, that's it....very fun afternoon. I saw Liz Phair the night before
and she put on a good show too. I kept on thinking of the little song
Ben improvised in the Chicago show last year "Liz Phair lives here...but
the Pope doesn't live here." Speaking of, does anyone have a show where
BFF covered Chopsticks? I'd love to hear that.
xoxo,
Katy

Well, I don't think any artist knows exactly where he is headed when
it all begins, but I *do* think that the new album is a totally
logical evolution. I think that some of the catchy, pop edge of the
past is gone, but much of that had washed away by "WAEA."
>P.S. Who else out there thinks that Ben could/should write a musical?
I think he did, and it's called The Unauthorized Biography... ;^)
Seriously, though, I agree with the post that referred to the album as
a musical. I wouldn't take it that far, but I agree it has a definite
concept flowing through. Hell, the beginning of "Narcolepsy" almost
serves as an overture to the entire album.
Quick introduction of me...new to this list but not the band. Blah
Blah Blah.

My most beloved Fivers,
By now you must know or at least have heard rumors that Ben
is relocating himself to Adelaide Australia. No offense to the Australian
members of the Armchair but, Ben simply belongs in America. This may sound
selfish ,petty, immature even. I don't want to have to HATE this Frally
chick, but it's simply personal.
If you at all interested in becoming part of an Anti-Frally rally please let
me know privately

THIS time, I didn't see a damn thing move and all I got was static and a bit
of a song in there somewhere... Anyone else have problems like this?? Made me

I completely relate to those of you who were berating yourselves for not
buying the CD and the video tape of TUBORM together (at the splendiferous
price of 19.99 at Best Buy), and instead buying the CD alone. I did the same
thing. Like a crazed fan, I ran out and bought the CD without a second
thought, the day it came out. I think even HOURS later, I found out that the
CD was being offered with the tape. This weekend, I found out what a deal
the set was--20 bucks, man!!! Arrgghhh. I think CD stores should have put
the set where you'd find the CD, instead of in the video section. Of course,
that would take away from the fun feeling of sneaking into the video section
and feeling like you'd really FOUND something. Oh well. Angst, angst, angst.

Tonight, by fluke, I ended up watching BFF live at Park West Chicago on my
RealPlayer. I have NEVER seen BFF perform before and I must say that I
practically watched the whole thing without blinking! *ouch, sore eyes* I
am so frickin' STOKED! OH PLEASE, let them come to the west coast, WA or
even in Canada...!!! This is amazing stuff. I've never loved a band like
this before. They are so AMAZING.
Yes, I'm crazy, but HECK, I GET THE JOB DONE!
Thanks for letting me jabber away incoherently... you all rock!

To Susan Park and all other desperate west coasters (there doesnt seem to be
that many on the list, does there?),
After a few of my whining posts to the MA bewailing such geographical
injustice, the darling frank j maynard was kind enough to give me the
explanation that the boys were not planning a tour for early summer because
frally is due to bear the folds twins in that time period (I think someone
else has also mentioned this on the list) and they would not want to have to
cancel any shows. fair? maybe not, but what sucks more than not having any
prospects of seeing the band in the near future? thinkin youre gonna see them
only to have the show cancelled at the last minute. talk about a catch-22.
grrrr.....so I guess the only thing we can do is to wallow in the self pity
for a few more months until they make it back from touring the rest of the
goddamn planet....
sigh.
I apologize to the non-west coasters who have now heard me bitch about this
about seventeen million times.
on a lighter note, I really like that dust in the wind/mess comparison. Ive
