Folds to appear at AES convention

The Audio Engineering Society, an international association of audio and acoustic professionals, has announced that Ben Folds will be the guest for a special interview segment during the society’s 131st convention in New York in October. The interview will be conducted by Errol Kolosine, Assistant Arts Professor at New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music. Kolosine is formerly general manager of the Caroline/Astralworks record label, on which Ben Folds Five released its first two albums, the self-titled debut and Whatever and Ever Amen, as well as Naked Baby Photos, a collection of b-sides and alternate takes after the group signed with Sony. The two-hour chat, starting at 2:30 PM on Friday, October 21, will cover Ben’s career, creative influences, collaborations and his perspective on today’s music business. According to the press release, he’ll also discuss and play cuts from his new 3-CD career retrospective, Best Imitation of Myself. The convention is to be held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York from October 20-23. The session will be of great interest to audio recording professionals, as Ben has built a noted recording studio in Nashville, Tenn., at which many artists, including Tony Bennett, have recorded. Ben’s also experimented extensively with acoustic pickup and mixing methods as well as unique variations on instruments such as piano and keytar.
