Ben’s Friends and Relations

“Rhymes with Nothing” latest from Ryan

Ben’s touring bassist Ryan Lerman has posted his latest song, Rhymes with Nothing, to YouTube. As with his earlier songs, he’s multi-tracked it, playing drums, electric bass and Fender keyboard, and the video is presented in the VideoSong multi-frame visual style. Ryan tweets that he’ll have a full album out in about six months.

Update: Ryan posted another song, After the Fact, today on YouTube. (25 April 2011)

Ryan Lerman on new Lauren O’Connell song

Singer-songwriter Lauren O’Connell has a new song up on her MySpace and on YouTube. I Belong to You features Ben’s touring bassist Ryan Lerman, whom Lauren describes as “stupid talented,” on guitar, bass, piano, assorted percussion, and accompanying vocals. From the small world department, Lauren, who hails from the Napa Valley area of California, has a project with Nataly from Pomplamoose as well.

My So-Called Band New Year’s Eve show

Sam Smith’s other musical venture, My So-Called Band, has a show at Nashville’ Mercy Lounge on New Year’s Eve. Sam’s posted that they plan on playing 58 songs from the ’90s, the longest show he’s  ever been in. The show,  which is sold out, starts at 10 pm.

“Bus Stop” reunion show

Ben’s brother Chuck Folds lets us know that his former band, Bus Stop, will be giving a reunion concert on Christmas night at the Blind Tiger in Greensboro, North Carolina. Chuck will be joined by his former bandmates, many of whom you’ve heard of: Evan Olson, Eddie Walker and Britt “Snuzz” Uzzell. Chuck has multiple projects going, including kid-friendly trio Big Bang Boom with Eddie and Steve Williard, who with Chuck and Tim Poole are Chuck Folds Five. The Blind Tiger is at 2115 Walker Avenue in Greensboro (this is the last show in their 22-year run at this address; they move to new, larger digs nearby in time for New Year’s Eve), and has the distinction of hosting the first-ever Ben Folds Five performance ever, in 1993.

Sam Smith movie poster exhibit to open

House

"House" poster designed by Sam Smith

Drummer Sam Smith, in his other life as a poster artist, has an exhibit of his movie posters going up at Nashville’s Belcourt Theatre starting Saturday, December 4. It’s Sam’s first art exhibit, and the opening event is from 5-8 PM, with about twenty of the posters he’s designed for mostly indie films remaining on display through December. The orange cat at left was a design he did for the theatrical re-release of Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977 film House.  Sam is also working on poster designs for his top ten films of 2010, and many will be available for sale at a later date.  For more information on Sam’s posters, visit his blog, Sam’s Myth. There’s also more info on Sam and his poster work in this article on slashfilm.com. Update: Sam has put up some pictures at his exhibition.
