Ryan Lerman, Ben’s touring bassist, has a new track, The Spark, up on YouTube. It’s an evocative ballad about having regrets over a breakup, featuring Ryan on guitar, bass, drums and B3. Give it a listen, and while you’re there, check out his back catalog including a nice Elliot Smith cover.
Ben’s Friends and Relations
Christmas song by Ben and Mark Hoppus
Ben’s recorded a little Christmas ditty with Mark Hoppus of Blink 182. Â In the vein of Ben’s earlier Christmas tune Santa is a Big Fat F***, comes Happy Holidays, You Bastard. Be forewarned: this one is NSFW (not safe for work) – there is adult language in this, as you would only expect. The song was performed on Hoppus’ show A Different Spin on the fuse.tv cable network.
Ask William Shatner
Now is your chance to ask questions of William Shatner, star of the CBS hit comedy $#*! My Dad Says. The best questions asked by fans will be packaged as a video and posted in the near future. Get more details and post your question!
Talk with $#*! creator
Justin Halpern, the creator of the Twitter phenom known as $#*! My Dad Says, will be chatting live with fans following Thursday’s episode of the new CBS-TV series based on the Twitter feed. Â Potential chatters should register here.
This has relevance, of course, because Ben’s new track Your Dogs is the theme song for the show and Ben’s piano licks provide the interstitial music in and out of segments. And,  William Shatner, who has collaborated with Ben musically, plays the “My Dad” character.
Will Owsley passes away
One of Ben’s best friends in the musical world, Will Owsley, died April 30, reportedly the result of suicide at age 44. Owsley was known for his strong guitar licks and edgy power-pop riffs. The holder of ten Gold Records, he was the touring guitarist for Amy Grant’s band. A native of Anniston, Alabama, Owsley collaborated with Folds in a trio called The Semantics (with Ben’s former Majosha bandmate Millard Powers, and later Zak Starkey, son of Beatles legend Ringo Starr).
More on Owsley’s life and music from All Music Guide and Wikipedia. A story about his death in The Nashville Tennessean, and the obituary in The Anniston Star, and a story from last year in the Star, in which he ironically says he wants to be buried in Anniston, next to his grandmother. Funeral services will be held in Anniston; at this time, the date has not been set. A memorial page has been set up on Facebook.
